I started my journey of Islay whiskeys with Caol Ila and moved to Laphroaig, ardbeg etc, but till this day, I feel like this is the most Islay whiskey I've ever had. Criminally underrated

Hard way to start 😃 Mine was with Laphroaig and I think with whiskies like Caol Ila and Laphroaig if you like them on the first try, then you're hooked! I absolutely agree with you on Caol Ila. The independent bottlings are just fantastic and the standard 12 year old is just a beautiful whisky. Cheers 🥃

@@thewhiskyenthusiast Definitely, I was a fan of caol ila from the start. But with the black label, I feel much less complex but some notes of peat and smoke are so overpowering, I actually like it. It's a no nonsense whisky for Islay lovers. Being one, I'd much rather have this black label over a more expensive spey side or highlands 😅

I’m late to the party but congrats on your first review 😂 This was a good whisky and great value. When it was available in our market a couple of years ago you could get it for $58 Australian, which was amazing. I think it was overlooked at the time because people thought the Black Label branding meant it was a blended scotch. If it had been branded as “Green Label Islay Origin” ( which would have made more sense) it would have sold out in no time. I bought two 6 bottle cases at the time and I still have 4 bottles left.

I think radical Islays like Ardbeg or Laphroaig can be hard work but this is much easier to drink and I like it much better than any other whisky.

Yeah I get that. This is a very well made whisky with a lot of peat, but that sweetness is helping it go down well. Glad you enjoy it, I like it as well. Cheers!

Thanks for your review of this, Enthusiast, one of few in English on youtube. I'm enjoying this bottle: it's hard to make something bad out of Caol Ila and Lagavulin. With these JW Origins series bottles, I swear I'm seeing light mist when water is added, which suggests only light chill-filtration? That's good, right!

Great question! This one is much more peat forward than Green Label and much sweeter than the Island Green. I think Green Label is much more balanced in terms of flavour and I find the Island Green a bit too harsh and one sided, but if you want a sweet peat bomb, Islay Origin is your dram.
