Caroline also had huge following here in Ireland. Highlights were the Johnny Walker show and the Irish Top 40.....those WERE the days my friend,we thought theyd never end

I loved the story about the Frinton Flashers on the beach and how when the BBC visited the ship to make a visit and Johnnie got loads of cars to turn up,on the beach and on the signal the cars lit up the coast …. Johnnie is a legend 😂😂😂

Remember listening to Johnny walker as a young teenager on his 9 to 12 show usually finishing with Percy Sledges 'warm and tender love'.To me these days will never be re lived and as JW said so many things happened in a relatively short space of time considering the technology that was available then.Pirate radio was the only source of 'new genres of music available to the British public.SOUL ,BLUES,MOTOWN AND SKA would not have existed for about another 6 years if left for the BBC to promote it .

Most people associate pirate radio with Radio Caroline, but in truth there were pirate radio stations all around the UK. Radio Scotland went on air on New Year's Eve. Then Radio 270 intended to start broadcasting on the 1st April off the Scarborough coast. In the end it started in June 1966. Sadly in 1967 the government brought in legislation that effectively closed down all pirate radio stations. As a 14 year old boy, with transistor radio in hand, I remember in 1966 going out to sea on a trip around Radio 270 waving at the DJ's. Happy memories !!

Johnny remarked elsewhere that the records played on the station was 'One from the playlist and from not....' If only that were the case now.
