I’m agnostic but grew up in church and got so much from it. I often say I don’t believe in God but I believe on Good. The good thing there is that you believe in both. He was from French colonized Martinique (in the Caribbean Islands), was a psychiatrist who served in the French forces, and was an active supporter of the Algerian liberation movement (they were colonized by France at the time). He was friends with some of the key movers and shakers of the Surrealism movement, especially Andre Breton, who was the key founder. A lot of people these days misunderstand surrealism, but it was about psychological freedom, fundamentally. Fanon wrote about colonization (and freedom from it) in context of psychological freedom (a la Andre Breton/surrealism), and his work is still relevant today.
