A lot of people here being very abusive of the daughter! You know nothing of her circumstances. A whole generation of kids were brought up in institutions and we all know what happened there. Where were the fathers when all this was going on ?? If you want to be abusive direct it at the feckless fathers who took no responsibility for these children who went on to lead sad and lonely lives through no fault of their own.

You can tell towards the end, the surviving brother felt betrayed by his brothers silence over the matter, when he said the dog was more faithful than his brother. Sad end to a lifetime spent living so closely together. Then again we don't know the circumstances as to why it was kept secret. You can just feel the hurt he must have felt by the betrayal. Maybe if the brother had lived longer he might have said something about it if he'd known he was about to die As they both had said they could have talked it out and sorted it.

This happened quite a bit actually, at that time it's not every woman would be accepted into a farm and so often discreet relationships went on for years undetected by siblings only to come to light after the death of a brother. The brother in question probably did know he was a father but a relationship such that which a child was born would have been a big thing then and kept secret if possible.... those fathers and mothers were victims of the times ... as were the children. You would feel for the remaining brother though because you could sense his feelings of betrayal towards his brother, a sad way to be feeling in your twilight years.

Amazing here how so many are cursing almost that daughter who has claimed? Why wouldn't she? Seems like with the brother's secrecy she was nearly denied. Was her mother paid to be quiet? Those times with the church so imposing being a single parent was dreadful, almost ostracised especially as a woman. As for the children it was also very hard. This daughter had her right legally to claim. Here we only hear one side of the story and to see this brother not even knowing that must have hurt too.
