WOW!!!! Johnny Ace!!!!** I Was 5 yrs. Old When I Heard This Song. It Was Very Pure, And Very "Emotional." When I Heard It, I Could Feel The "Sincerity" And Intense "Energy" In Johnny Ace Voice.** Johnny Ace Is A RB/Soul Legend!!!!!**

When I was a teenager in Harlem I would go to 125'st and sing 'The Clock' by Johnny Ace in a small 'pay-to-record' booth. I still have have that recording! Muhammad

Janet, my dad plays your fathers music everyday for the past 40 years. I want to do a biopic of your father. His voice was brilliant. It was such a tragedy to lose him at a young age. His music lives forever. Stay Anointed sis👑

The true story about John Marshall Alexander, Jr. (JOHNNY ACE) was finally out decades ago. It's a relief, to say the least. Thank God, Johnny Ace is immortalized through his recordings. I'm sixty-nine years old, and have crystal clear memory of his classic recordings for Duke Records. My Uncle had Johnny Ace's classic hits on the 78 RPM singles (Duke 102, 107, 112, 118, 128, 132, 136, 144, 148 and 154), I have the original 45 RPM singles (Duke 45-102, 45-107, 45-112, 45-118, 45-128, 45-132, 45-136, 45-144, 45-148, 45-154), the two 45 RPM EPs (Duke EP-80 and 81), memorial albums on both the original ten-inch (Duke LP-70) and twelve-inch (Duke DLP-71) LPs, in near mint plus (NM+) condition. The latter is on red vinyl.

Back in the 50s and 60s, being a touring musician was a pretty dangerous job. They mostly delt with cash, and the risk of being robbed was very high. Many thus, packed heat.If one was lucky, they grew up with a father who was either former military, or a cop, and would ram gun safety down their kids throat.I learned, to NEVER point a gun at anyone, and to ALWAYS asume, a gun was loaded, from my ex sgt pop, well before I was ten years old. Sad story indeed.

THANK YOU! I 've always had a problem with that Russian Roulette story! It was never mentioned who he played it with! This story makes WAY MORE sense than that one! And Buddy Ace (Root Doctor) had something of a career himself if I'm not mistaken? Also Erma Franklin did an excellent version of NEVER LET ME GO. And I wonder if Mel Walker is Johnny Otis' answer to Johnny Ace, mmmm?

Thank you for this. I'm so glad there are ppl keeping this music history alive for those of us who had not been born yet. I just found out about Johnny Ace after reading Varetta Dillard's Spotify biography where it mentions the song "Johnny Has Gone." Surely enough, in his Spotify biography it says he was playing Russian roulette. I'm glad I got the real story so I can incorporate that into the play/script I'm plan to write which will include a character based on him. Much appreciation to you good Sir!

Upon listening to this, the life of Tupac Shakur seemingly mirrors that of Johnny Ace if you really think about it. Both were talented black men who were manipulated by the record industry, died way too young by their own foolish ways, and exploited posthumously by their peers.

This tragedy occurred in my hometown (Houston) when I was a toddler, and has fascinated me for years. I first was told it was a tragic accident. But as I learned more and more about it through the years, I became convinced there was some mystery behind it. Some conspiracy seemed to be afoot (Don Robey was a notorious swindler). Took me years to be convinced it was just exactly the ridiculous accident that you described; heartbreaking.

Words are powerful, it's interesting how Johnny always played with his gun and lived. It wasn't until Big Mama Thorton shouted with emotion that, "One day your going to kill someone!" Then Johnny happens to shoot himself. Very interesting and sad, RIP Johnny.

A job well done by you Mike Boone. The Chancellor of Soul!!People have no idea especially the generations of today in music, where their so called concept of music comes from. I am thankful to God in heaven that this channel is circulating on You Tube and educating the people out there that great pioneers long before them gave them the music that they so happily listen and groove to.They need to honor, respect and have a wider mindset than just having being stuck in one genre of music which in my opinion, needs to be reviewed more and more.Due to Jim Crow laws of way back then a lot of artists like the Great Johnny Ace would never receive near as much accolades as due Elvis Presley who once in a interview with a magazine said that he couldn’t really sing like a colored man can in reference to Fats Domino.Gof bless you Mike Boone and keep up the good work letting people know that without Black people in music I say boldly, they would have no ROCK and ROLL!!!!🙏

A short-lived story but Johnny Ace accomplished in 2 years what took other R&B artists several years to do! ADDITIONAL NOTE: Listen closely to "Pledging My Love" and you'll clearly this song was spliced together... the 1st verse is simply spliced a repeated! which leads one to believe if it was ever completed or was it a demo???
