Escellent Hank Ballard presentation, Mike. I was the first psychologist at Watts Kedren Community Mental Health Ctr founded after the 1965 Watts Riot in 1968. I was a white USC PhD born with Cerebral Palsy.. Found no one would hire a disabled "shrink" and I was one of 4 non-blacks on staff. Worked harder than most, learned a ton, passed CA State Boards my first time and might have stayed forever but for the usual political crapola that metastasized into the usual corruptions we take for granted as par for the course. I'm 82, long retired , not "filthy rich" but happy and lucky for the experiences. Best regards

I had the pleasure of meeting Hank Ballard and his wife in 1988. They were looking forward to going to New York when Hank was inducted into the Hall of Fame. When his wife was killed, he seemed to have lost a part of his heart. The thing I will never forget about Hank is his laugh and the way he would say, "I love ya, I love ya, I love ya"........a charismatic man in every way. I just know he's in a better place. RIP Mr. Ballard and thanks for the memories. I love ya, I love ya, I love ya

I met him at a show in southeast Ohio in the late 90s. He was traveling with the re-formed "Drifters-Coasters-Platters" show that was traveling around the country at the time. The group I was performing with at the time was the opening act. Before the show, I was standing backstage talking with him for about half an hour, but I didn't know who he was and he didn't mention it. I just thought he was a very nice, unassuming gentleman. The singers were mostly in their mid-30s and obviously not original members. I thought that maybe he was their manager. Right before their show, he introduced himself to me and then went up and just blew the rest of those younger singers right off the stage. He had one of the greatest, most powerful voices I've ever heard. But what always stayed with me is what a nice and humble man he was. RIP Mr. Ballard, from a longtime fan.

There's a lot of controversy about whether Hank wrote the Twist. But the truth is he rewrote the song using only the title since the lyrics were originally written with sexual overtones and Hank was wanting a new cleaner sound. So, the original lyrics while still recorded by Hank but not written by him were out there, he rewrote the whole song even changing the tune. Hank used his new version as a B side but Black DJs played both sides which caught the ear of Dick Clark. It's speculated that Hank was invited to perform on Bandstand but if true, something intervened. Called too late to make the date perhaps but Hank said that he was already booked and tried to change the date. As it turned out, it was Clark that wanted the song for Chubby Checker, an artist he had an interest in. Chubby recorded the song and got all the credit while Hank's version languished on the Rythm and Blues stations. Hank kept pushing and when Clark saw legalities might be coming, he agreed to promote 2 other songs ,Finger Poppin Time and Thrill On The Hill on Bandstand. Hank was never invited to perform them on the show however. Chubby milked the Twist for all he could. It ran it's course and was mostly forgotten until 1991 when John Beauman ( Bowser of Sha Na Na ) went before Congress to ask for back royalties for artists that were cheated by promoters, record companies and lost the rights to their material. Congress passed the bill and it became law. Dick Clark wound up paying millions in back royalties to Hank and several others from the "payola" days of the late 50s. He didn't want to tarnish his clean-cut professional image, so he made restitution without any fuss to keep his name out of the news. No one but Hank , now deceased, knows what he was awarded. As a bonus, Hank was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992. ( Or earlier). Chubby , although the face of the Twist, was banned for life. He still brags and says a statue should be erected to him as the creator of the Twist, he's been ignored because of his arragonce. He was up for nomination until Hank was picked instead of him . Sure, Dick Clark was the instigator but Chubby, once the star, is looked upon by the people in the recording industry as undesirable. It might change but I don't think so. Hank's already been chosen. And two people can't be chosen for one man's creation.

One afternoon in the summer of 1960, I was sitting in my Aunts care with my cousin. I had just turned 11. While waiting we put the radio on. The 2nd song I heard was the ULTIMATE song I had ever heard ! I told my cousin that this is my favorite song !! 60 years later it remains !!! I LOVE HANK BALLARD !!! I learned about "Annie" in the late 60's. I have many albums and 45's by him, old and new. He said he wanted to be the 1st Black Country + Western SINGER. I've heard those Dick Clark stories. I did see him one time at Madison Square Gardens in the early mid 70's. In 1963 thy were showing re-runs of "T T T T" in the afternoon at 3:00pm. I came home from school and my mom was watching it. As I watch I said "Mom, who is this ? she said the man that wrote "The Twist". At 1st look I picked him. He was the 1st person to have 3 songs on the chats.(1960). All his hits from the mid 50's and the early 60's were GREAT !!! I love the song "Sugaree" Great sax solo and guitar. And it's in stereo. Oh yes, my favorite song ? It's the one you played at the end !!! I think it's your favorite too !! Thank You for this GREAT mini bio. R.I.P HANK !

The race and funky tunes didn't showcase Hank's gutsy rich talent ! Hank's earlier blues should be major classics by now ! He didn't have to prove his race ! He was there all the time! Thank you for bringing this to public!!!

Thanks!Chancellor of Soul! This video presentation provides evidence that James Brown was the originator of Funk as a musical genre. Listening to his influence on the music of artists such as Hank Ballard,Bootsy Collins,Earth Wind &Fire, Charles Wright,Sly Stone,Prince and many others, one cannot deny that certain styles of R&B music morphed into the Funk genre because of Mr Brown while still being categorized as Soul during the late 60s and early 70s 'cause Funk used to be a bad word!

I remember both versions of The Twist being played incessantly back in '60. The voices were so similar it was hard to tell the difference. For all the good he did for all genres of music later on, he was never a champion for black music and its artists during his days in Philly.

Great story on Hank Ballard👑⭐️. Dick Clark did some shady stuff with The Twist by giving it to Chubby Checker. But as they say “that’s show business”. Keep up the great work you do with the real unsung and underrated artists⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Crazy thing is Chubby Checker kept arguing that he should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because of The Twist but I’m guessing because Hank got in that inducting the guy who basically stole his song would seem wrong.
