Now at 18:30 this is a sign of Johnny taking a commercial break much earlier than planned, as Charles was only out with him for 2 minutes. This is what happened when Johnny felt an interview was going badly. Peter Lassally said at this point, he and Freddie would come over to Johnny, and try to work out why the interview was bombing. Charles was not on good form on this night. The break helped Johnny to try and recover the interview.

there was an edit in that, watch carefully the wider shot to the tighter one, it's not in real time.

@@brianderoy4903 That's odd, as Carson was notorious for taping in real time. He had all the studio clocks set to 11.30pm in the studio, and the band played during the commercial breaks. All was produced as live with no edits. Carson said this many times, and indeed on some bits when he talked with Ed at the desk he would always refer to his hosting the show "live".

@@johnking5174 remember this version is the redone one for antenna TV. The break cards say "johnny Carson" also since they can't brand it Tonight Show and use the original clip

Brown is absolutely terrible. They pushed him so hard in the eighties but no one was interested. You can see why.

A. Whitney Brown was probably a better comedy writer than stand-up. He wrote great sketches for SNL, yet. I remember just tolerating his segments on SNL's news spots back in the day.
