My parents & I met Johnny one mornin' out in front of his beautiful Lakeside home in Hendersonville TN. We were standing by his locked gate to his driveway, taking pictures of ourselves & all of a sudden, we saw "The Man in Black" himself casually walkin' down his driveway, comin' right towards us, wearin' his black bathrobe & black slippers & carryin' a cup of black coffee & we thought "Oh shit! Is he comin' out here to yell at us or something?!" But it was just the complete opposite!!! He said with a very very deep mornin' raspy voice, "Good Mornin'! I noticed you fine folks out here when I was pourin' my coffee & lookin' out the window & I thought I'd come out & say Hi to y'all while I come to get my newspaper." Right then, I noticed his newspaper layin on the ground about 10' from me, so I grabbed it for him & handed it to him through his gate & he looked down at me & said, "Thank ya kindly, darlin" & then he shook my Dad's hand & my Dad told him that his favorite song of his was "A Boy Named Sue" & then the 2 of them struck up about a 10-15 minute conversation all about fishing & what all kinds of fish Johnny had caught in that Lake where he lived, while my Mom & I stood there & couldn't believe that the three of us are actually standin' there at Johnny's house talkin to Johnny Cash himself in his bathrobe & slippers, just coz he wanted to come out & say Hi to US!!! It fuckin blew our minds!!🤯🤯 What a man!!! Very very nice & down to earth man!! I remember it all like it happened only yesterday!😊❤️😊

Hey there! The man that wrote this song was my favorite children's book author: Shel Silverstein. He wrote "A Light in the Attic", "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and my personal favorite: "The Giving Tree." He gave this song to Johnny Cash in the 60's and the rest is history. Your smile is contagious when watching this video!! Thanks for my making me smile!!

A boy named Sue was actually recorded live at St Quentin Prison. @Steve Trowbridge request for Folsom prison blues is a great shout. At the time Johnny Cash had recently controlled his drug abuse problems, and was looking to turn his career around after several years of limited commercial success. Backed by June Carter, Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three, Cash performed two shows at Folsom State Prison in California on January 13, 1968. The album At Folsom Prison consists of fifteen tracks from the first show and two tracks from the second. Folsom Prison Blues is the first track on the album.

The great thing about "A Boy Named Sue" is that it tells a compelling story, with twists and turns and a great ending - all in about three minutes. A true example of a song that tells a tale with both humor and sadness and empathy. It makes you pay attention to every word, wondering what happens next. A lost art nowadays.

It's clever that you noticed how you could set this to a rap beat. Johnny has jokingly (but not necessarily wrongly) been called the first rapper. Especially when you consider he was back in the 50's singing such controversial lines as "I shot a man in Reno....just to watch him die" Gotta love The Man in Black.

I remember when this recording was released. As a young boy who had only heard a lot of Johnny Cash, as my father's favorite, this was where I began to appreciate Johnny Cash. Even though I was refusing to fully enjoy country, since it was my parent's choice of music. This song would have hit #1 on the Billboard Chart, if it were not for the Rolling Stones', "Honky Tonk Women" (which was my favorite band). Peace, love, and Hendrix!

Abracadabra, what you said at the end of your commentary about Johnny Cash kind of rapping the lyrics, is something I've been telling people for years. Before Hip Hop was a thing, people have always rhythmically talked lyrics to songs. In square-dancing, the singers rap the lyrics. Johnny Cash is another example of some one rapping lyrics. Aerosmith too, which is why RUN-DMC covered the Aerosmith song, "Walk This Way." Please check out the Johnny Cash song, "The Man In Black."

Johnny Cash was an absolute legend. There are people that hate country music that loves Johnny Cash. He had such a crossover appeal. He is one of the few artists to be no only loved by country music lovers but artists and fans of all types of music . He was a master story teller and yes he basically he did a rap story in a country and folk music way. And I always love to brag when someone bad mouths Arkansas. I tell them excuse me but the legend Johnny Cash was born and raised in my state of Arkansas. He might of got famous in Memphis Tennessee but he was born and raised in Arkansas.

Two suggestions for Johnny Cash: "Sunday Morning Coming Down" (written by Kris Kristofferson who also wrote "Me and Bobby McGee") and "The Highwayman" which was performed by the super group of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris. They are different moods, but both amazing storytelling and vibes.

Thanks for your reactions. Your comments are very insightful. Nothing cuts through all our personal posturing and beefs like humor and good food a good music. I don't know if Johnny could cook, but he has the music and humor.

again another fantastic Johnny review. I'm not a rap fan but when you said it could be a rap I could hear it in my head and I never looked at it like that

Great reaction Abra, yes he is "Dudeish" for sure,,,no one like him, Love you to react to :Ragged Old Flag", it will make you proud to be an American, This is coming from a Canadian guy here... Your country sure could use someone like him and this song to remind you of what you are.

Love Johnny Cash. He made you laugh and cry. Another that'll make you laugh is his song "One Piece at a Time". It's worth checking out.

LOVED this reaction! If you wanna hear another REAL good story from him? Play Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues! This also came out in the 60's and unlike Boy Named Sue? It got extremely limited airplay on the radio! lol ☻☺

The song was written by Shell Silversteen. He wrote kids books of poems (I have them all). Up the Down Staircase is my favorite.

Johnny Cash was hip hop before hip hop. He sang about shooting people, getting locked up and doing drugs 😂

I'm on a binge, watching your reactions. I've never related to another "Reactor" as I have you. We speak the same language, probably because most reactors are in their 20's. I was blessed, in this case, by being born to late in life parents (38 years older). I also have 4 siblings that are all older by 16-7 yrs. That means, I grew up in a home with 2 of the most influential generations, with me representing (and you also I assume) yet another generation. I have 3 generations of musical influence (Movies too but, don't get me started. LOL). I know all these songs, I watch because, well...I get to relive, through you, how I felt the first time I heard the song. It's a nice connection even though we'll never cross paths, it's a connection nonetheless.

This song was written by Shel Silverstein, based on the idea of Sue K. Hicks. He is best known for his roll of a prosecutor in the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial.
