Hi Asher, I am just replying because my surname is Burleigh. My ancestors came from Britain to New Zealand in the 1800s. They were Burley's but later learned that the correct spelling was Burleigh. These are unusual surnames in New Zealand. I have seen more Burleys in Australia. It is good seeing your name, Bro.
@Ashbash75 Жыл бұрын
@@barbsmart7373 Hey 👋🏻 Always nice to meet a fellow Burley ! The name does originate from the southern area of the UK and even has its own coat of arms which has three wild boars. I believe it originates from Saxon although it has changed both spellings and pronunciation over the years. Its not even that common of a surname here so I can imagine it must be even rarer where you are ... I guess through one family tree or another we are distantly related too ! Thanks for reaching out! 😎😃
@barbsmart7373 Жыл бұрын
@@Ashbash75 Kia ora from New Zealand. It is great that you have replied! I was in bed but now I have been up to find my 1784-1984 Burleigh book about our descendants put together by my father's cousin. An American Burleigh thought our descendants moved from the south of England about 1500 possibly from Exeter region. It is thought the family were devout protestants, so it may be why the moved to Scotland, to Lesmahagow. A Robert Burley left Lesmahagow around 1874, aged 18. A number of his aunts, uncles and cousins left around then also and some went to USA snd Canada. About 20 or more Burleys stayed there in Lesmahagow. What do you know about your people, and where are you, Brother?
@Ashbash75 Жыл бұрын
@@barbsmart7373 That's very interesting to hear that your Father's cousin did his own family research. I did know that Burley's moved to Scotland and in fact one of their descendants is a George Burley who used to play and then later manage Ipswich Town football club here in the UK and with pretty good success too ! I also know that Queen Elizabeth 1st Treasurer was Lord Burleigh. Another interesting fact is that Burley tobacco is one of the leading varieties globally. The name itself roughly translates into "coming from a hilly fort or enclosure surrounded by trees". My own family come from the South East of England but I know my great grandfather was born and raised in Sussex so that would account for the South of England origins.

Two of the greatest legends - patriots, songwriters and balladiers of the 20th century, joking about their families being on different sides of the Civil War. Burl was famous for his many children's songs, a lot of which he wrote. No auto-tune electro-pop like today!

The old balladeers are dead or dying off, and I honestly haven't heard many singers today that are even close to the talented singers and guitarists we grew up with in America. What is the matter with the new generations? Don't they have any sense of sentimentality or any ear for good music? I know there is a generation gap, and I'm just an old 75 year old relic, but sometimes I think good music is dead today. If we didn't have these old videos, nobody would know the difference.
@jrnfw40602 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better, myself, at 71+. I still have most of those old vinyls and yes, a turntable. Sure do miss those simpler times when artists had a lot more soul and weren't afraid to express it. Much of what we have today isn't worth listening to.
@jrnfw40602 жыл бұрын
Johnny Cash was quite handsome before he became so devastatingly ill. Burl Ives contracted oral cancer, probably from smoking cigars or a pipe. Both were among my favorite folk/country singers, and I still have their vinyls, today.
