Just to honor Johnny Cash, later on listen to him on "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. It's one of his last, and greatest.

I grew up with all the old country songs that Geoff has done. Johnny would be proud of how Geoff covered this song. Geoff did it for last year's Halloween release. Geoff added a new clone name to this. He named three in his Elvis cover of Way Down. I got the names off the costume list in the BTS video. L to R Jeff, Daryl, Geoff, Goff, and Jeoph.

I love Johnny's version, but honestly I think Geoff elevated it to something amazing. Wait until you hear his new one Jack's Lament from Nightmare Before Christmas... Geoff continues to be the King of Halloween

To be fair --- As with most covers, they wouldn't be possible without an original -- so that appreciation has to be there! Now -- comparisons amongst the bass' (Geoff, Tim, Avi) --- Honestly, ya can't do that ... each have their own greatness with such range, it's ridiculous man!!! They're all great and awesome. Be Safe

Geoff is a master at arrangement. The lows are subharmonic, but I really love his baritone and tenor ranges. He has been changing his arrangements so that the higher voices are getting solo lines (not in this one yet). I think he put the instrumentation at the front during those portions to emphasize the "ghostly" effect. Voiceplay's latest three could not be more different from each other. They did a very emotional version of Creep that had us all weeping. To make up for that, they did an hysterically funny version of Drunken Sailor (watch to the end!), and just dropped Hellfire from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Don't forget the Geoff and VoicePlay Halloween treats; Jack's Lament and Hellfire. Both are astounding. I love Ghostriders in the Sky. I'll take Geoff's version too. Geoff's lowest growl is A0 in Enemy, doesn't use the growl much, but does do subharmonic is B0 (3 B0s extended in Valhalla Calling), but usually he's sub between D1-G1, full chest F#1 and up, falsetto top end used to be A5 but in Peaches mini (Super Mario Bros) he's at Bb5. If you get a chance sometime, do a reaction to Johnny Cash doing a cover of Nine Inch Nails Hurt. It was one of the last songs he did, did it in his home and June his wife was there watching him. I listened to both versions, and I tell you, Cash's version hollowed me out. Reznor okayed Cash to do the song (despite that it was his most personal song). He was sorry he'd allowed it when he heard the CD but when he saw the video he said, "That's Cash's song now." The difference in the 2 versions was the difference in youth and age filled with regrets. It is a masterpiece.

It's October, and VoicePlay (and Geoff) are kings of Halloween. Lots of great music to choose from - if you haven't yet listened to VP's version of Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King, you absolutely should! It's wild, crazy and gorgeous all at once. And of course, they just released Hellfire, which works nicely in the Halloween space.

This was already a really old song when Johnny covered it - in fact it was old when my mum used to sing it to me in the 60s. I love Geoff's version. I can see what you mean about the mix, and I agree to an extent; but it's not enough to bother me. And welcome Daryl, fourth member of the Geoffettes, seen here for the first time alongside Jeff, Jeoph, and Goff...

If you notice, the vocals when they're more to the back is only during the times when the ghost riders are transparent, where they look more like actual ghosts in the scene. It would make sense, at least visually, that their voices would be more ethereal and not as strong.....kind of like just being heard on the wind. Just a thought. 😊
@nightthornkvala94132 Жыл бұрын
And I think it's mostly ahhhhs and ohhhhh instead of actual words. That kind of blends with the music, floating on the air of the music.

Thanks for showing the Cash version, I had not heard his cover of the song. The version I knew was from the ‘70s by The Outlaws and I think Geoff might have taken a bit from them now that I’ve heard Jonny’s. That Yippee Aye Yay that Geoff does is more like their cover. Very interesting to compare. And about the louder instrumentation, I think it was purposeful. Not only, as pointed out elsewhere in the comments, is that where the ghosts are more transparent, but it also echoes where Cash lifted up his guitar so the strumming came in stronger on the microphone. Especially since Geoff worked to get just the right plug-in to emphasize that strummed acoustic guitar. That predominate strummed sound helps remind us of the western origins of the song (and story/legend)

Johnny was live with hardly any effects. He used the right amount of low notes needed for the song. There was only one Johnny. Geoff does a good job but hard to compare between a live version and a taped version. I do like the effects behind Geoff and the outfits.. Lightning was cool!

I've never heard the original by Johnny Cash, I just knew the song from the Blues Brothers (2nd movie I think) and I really liked it. But Geoff's version is even better. I love when he's not just sticking to his low bass range and at that time I felt like, although he already did some songs before with almost his whole range, he started to use his upper range more and more in his covers and not only in his harmonies or with slower songs. I really like when he belts it out or even gives us a nice rock scream (can only think of three or four VP- and Geoff-covers where he does that and hope it gets more).

I just happened to catch this one late last night, while looking for some information for another reactor. Colm provides all of the harmonies, and (I think) all of the instrumentals. The original, by Burl Ives, tells the story, in all it’s creepiness, without a deep bass. Done in 1949, was a favorite juke-box choice of mine! (I was four !) Jonny starts low, and stays there, as he should. Geoff goes all gimmicky, and loses the feel of the song. Geoff has his moments, but doesn’t have the consistency.

YES! I was born in 1949, and basically born hearing music. My mom was a concert violinist with a leaning toward country music, and in her later years, she played bluegrass fiddle. She also played other instruments and sang beautifully. She taught all four of us kids music, and we all played at least one instrument and still, when the remainders of us get together, we start singing all of the old "silly songs" that we loved over the years, as well as some of our old family favorites. This one is one of those. It was my dad who sang it to us. He didn't play any instruments, but he had a great (low tenor) singing voice, and this was one of his favorites. I have a Burl Ives music book that I've used so much it's well-worn, for both piano and guitar playing. It's one of my favorites, and it has Ghost Riders in it. 😀
