Notice Goff is left handed. This song is an old Western tune. It has been around since the 1940s. So many artists have performed it that the list of them is huge. One of my favorites was Marty Robbins.

I felt that Geoff was perfect for a cover of this song. Johnny Cash already has a pretty deep voice and I knew he'd put his own Geoff spin on it. This song is legendary.

I am mildly dismayed at how many of the reactors who've done this song so far are unfamiliar with the song. I'm old, I guess, but I've always thought of this song as kind of iconic Americana. Heck, I remember it from GRADE SCHOOL! But I still love your reactions; you get so completely caught up in the music. And I'm glad you recognized that this made you miss a transition. Some reactors annoy me mightily because they close their eyes right at some meaningful part of the video, and never back up at pauses to let us recapture the flow. This video, while great fun to watch, at least didn't have any moments that make me shake my fist and shout, "OMG, you MISSED it!"

Ghost Riders is an old country - western classic, originally done by Stan Jones in 1948 but covered by many greats since then including Marty Robins and Johnny Cash. I am surprised by how many people are not familiar with this but I am telling my age I guess. Love all your reactions and analysis (especially Home Free, I'm a Home Fry). This is a great cover for Halloween the way Geoff presents this.
@Badger777222 жыл бұрын
I'm also surprised at how many people have never heard of it. It was something my uncle (who was a big western music fan) played all the time when we visited him, so I'm very familiar with it. But I guess I'm showing my age there, too!
@SeliahK2 жыл бұрын
Johnny Cash was my first exposure to it! My mom played it a lot. This version was great, too. I actually used to think Cash was the original. I only found out his was a cover when I was in my early 20's. I'm 43 now, so... yeah, maybe a generational thing. :)

I first heard one of johnny Cash's meany recordings. I always thought it was one that he wrote. When I first watched Geoff's version I went looking for the first time it was recorded. That's when I found out that Cash didn't create this song and it was in fact far older than I had thought.

welcome, brother, to spooky season! if you haven't seen VP's This Is Halloween yet, I'd get right on that. it was what got me hooked forever on VP. fun story: I stumbled upon Grim Grinning Ghosts (another of theirs I'd recommend) a few years back, loved it, and added it to my favorites. but for some reason it didn't occur to me to look into who it was by. some years later, I stumbled upon This Is Halloween, and thought I recognized a couple of the faces...! went back and, by gum, same group! I fell straight down the VP rabbit hole, became a patron, and have never ever looked back. I consider it destiny.

Watching you get slack-jawed and flummoxed is why I keep coming back. 🤣 As Geoff keeps working on his low notes (C1 in Way Down, B0 in Halo, etc.) it's been improving his mid-range while still keeping his upper range. He was already so good it's like an Olympic athlete shaving fractions of seconds off his time rather than a high school pole vaulter gaining inches, but still... even someone with an untrained ear like me can hear the difference if you compare now with earlier videos. A reactor who is a trained vocalist said something about it relating to more forward placement in his mask, less nasally. Whatever it is, his voice gives me chills in the best way, especially on the yippee-i-a, yippee-i-o chorus here. Jeff is the scariest, most zombie-like. Jeoph looks like a gambler who doesn't take kindly to cheating. Daryl is already nicknamed Hairy Gibb or Scary Gibb, as Geoff was singing like Barry Gibb in the makeup chair. Love the detail that Goff is a southpaw. Now we know what happened to Goff and Jeoph for eating popcorn out of the dustpan and licking the toilet brush in Way Down. My Spooktober must-watch videos from Geoff are Monster Mash and Headless Horseman, and now Ghost Riders. Halloween type favorites from VoicePlay include Hide and Seek, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, What's This (be sure to watch the outro), This Is Halloween (that's Kathy in the costume on her knees knocking on the door), Oogie Boogie's Song, Superstition (with Omar Cardona, who is competing on The Voice), Grim Grinning Ghosts (there's one version in makeup as the Singing Busts and an older one they filmed backstage after a concert), Phantom of the Opera, Once Upon a Dream, Friends on the Other Side, and Zombies vs Hillbillies (with Home Free). If you just want to go scary, there's the trilogy of Trapped and Panic In Four Minutes parts one and two. They also have some mini videos, like Put A Spell On You, the Hide and Seek TikTok duet with Lauren Paley, and Halloween Singers Go Psycho (with Cesar and J.None).

Why do almost none of the reactors know Ghost Riders in the Sky?!? It blows my mind, I grew up with it. I remember going to chuck wagon dinners as a kid where the bass of the group rocked this song. Then again I don't know anything pop, so Good 4 U and Encanto was brand new to me when Voiceplay covered it. Also blew my mind how every single reactor just knows songs like Good 4 U like it's second nature. Where did they learn those songs?

Here's a bit of trivia: The original song goes yippie yi yay, yippee yi o. Johnny Cash inverted it, though I'm not sure he was the first one to do it. Also, the original makes it clear these are the "mournful cries" of the ghost riders.
