I like this version a lot more than most. The bass player singing backup on the chorus is a great touch! And the tone of everything is just great!

@@johnnycashcovers05the3rd7 Johnny didn't go into a lot of detail in his last autobiography he just said him and Marshall weren't getting along at the time (early 80s), but other sources say Johnny was going through something of a relapse at the time with addiction to pain killers prescribed to him by a doctor. Marshall went on to produce The Statler Brothers and Johnny said he was glad things worked out for him. Johnny said it made him shudder when he thought about what he did to Marshall. He ended up checking into The Betty Ford Clinic to get the help he needed. It was a bad time for Johnny - he not only lost Marshall, who had been with him from the beginning, but he nearly ended his marriage to June.
