Johnny Cash at the top of his game, right after his comeback with Rick Rubin. There are dozens of clips on KZbin, but to really get the feeling of a concert, I feel it's necessary to put up the whole thing.

Found this recording after watching the documentary 'Johnny Cash in Britain', and in a clip from the Glastonbury Festival they had included the whole of Folsom Prison Blues, the opening act. This was some three weeks before the Manhattan Center gig, and as far as I know he hadn't performed for bigger audiences as only himself for many years. Somehow this performance was a restoring of his career, even though he had great success together with the Highway Men between 1985 and 1995, but the Cash style of country music generally wasn't what hit the top of the charge in that period. So the festival management did ask themselves if they took a big chance by booking him, but the reception he got overwhelmed everyone, with the young audience obviously knowing the songs, and clearly giving a spark to the 62 year old Johnny Cash, a spark that also is shining in this film. It's showing the world what a timeless legend he is.

I grew up on Johnny Cash.....my grandmother had every single one of his records, then every single one of his 8 tracks, then every single one of his tapes, then she started collecting his CD's. This brings back so many memories of hanging out at Grandma's house on the weekends helping with groceries, mowing her lawn and putting on the storm windows in the fall.

This has to be one of the best concerts of ALL time. I am a life long Cash fan since the first time I heard Ring of Fire on my grandparent's AM radio in their Scotty Tag A Long camper, when I used to spend summers with them. I wanted so bad to see this show as a native New Yorker, but I was in Philadelphia in art school at the time. I remember wanting to jump on the train to see this, but it will forever be a regret that I had not. But at least there is this wonderful video to allow me to see what I missed. Johnny Cash is just one of the best performers ever. He is the dark "Chairman of the Board".

We love you Johnny Cash (and family) In Aussie land your voice travels well over waters while we are out boating. Your baritone lives on and on over the lake system in Gippsland, Victoria Australia. It makes us feel free; it is like a Johnny Cash concert. For any boatie or yachty, I recommend playing Johnny's tunes on the water. It frees the soul. The louder the better. In memory of Johnny Cash, I will play his tunes on the water for the rest of my life.

I decided to watch a legend instead of some old rock and roll. Boy am I glad that I did, that I did, that I did, that I did: Johnny Cash. This concert just blows your mind. What a performer along w/ his band. It's the first time I ever watched him. I grew up w/ his songs in the 60s and 70s but was too young to see him on tv appearances. Thanks so much for uploading and experience of a lifetime. Sit back, relax, turn up the volume. and just plain listen! You'll be glad that u did. "Orange Blossom Express" - now that was a once in a lifetime performance by this "Man In Black". I listened to it 6x. 2 harmonicas and singing - how many musicians can do that? Enjoy.

No one on the planet enjoyed Johnny's resurgence more than I did, but if it weren't for the time when he thought he wasn't relevant anymore, I wouldn't have found him. He was my dad's. He became mine in his time when he thought he didn't matter. He always mattered. God bless his him.

June and Johnny might have died from broken hearts being so much different than the days they grew up in. It's like we don't love each other as a whole these days...we're all just out for ourselves. Who still practices the golden rule?...RIP June and Johnny. Your music, beliefs, and life are inspiring and always will be.

About one year after this Manhattan concert I first saw Johnny playing live, with pretty much the same songs, and the same great performance. He played in a midsize sports arena in Germany, and they hat put chairs, wrongfully assuming that most of his fans would be about his age. After the third song or so everybody had stood up and was pushing towards the stage. The people from the ranks (incuding me) climbed down a 2 meter high surrounding wall to get closer. What an athmosphere! Gone for good...

There are as usual no words to say how good Johnny was, I can't understand the hateful comments that some of his videos attract... He was a man with flaws and with a great will to try and overcome them...

I agree! I was blessed enough to see him in concert in July 1989 and he put on an excellent show, he could have not given his all to the performance, but he made it WELL worth our ticket prices even though he was just about fresh off the operating table! He even relearned one of his songs for a fan who had written him a letter requesting it. Twenty-Five Minutes To Go was the song he did for that fan.

Hi guys, I am writing from Italy... Eventhough he never played his music in Italy, I got in love with johnny while I was linving in the US... around 2000/4. Actually it was for my ex girl friend, american girl, that I met him first.. Then I statrted to study his songs because I wanted to understand the society I was living in; after almost 1 year I could read writing and understanding his tongue and of course what was around me... the good and the bad. He sounds like another singer ' Fabrizio De Andrè', who was probably the most important italian songwriter ever .. I invite you guys to listen this guy. Maybe it will take a little time to get his lyrics, but don't worry because there are many italians that do not get anyrhing from his songs. They are quite mentally lazy.. just like many americans are!!!!

He was a certified legend! He could make a person feel whatever he was singing about from Gospel, to prison songs, to train songs to basic love songs! There is absolutely NO replacement for him! Bit He taught his daughter Rosanne very well.

Thank you for posting this concert,I have always liked Cash, seen him a few times. No one else can come close to the way he can tell a story in song. From the Folsom Prison concert to the Gospel Road LP,then on to Hurt. Johnny Cash sang about Life and could connect with his fans which are many and varied. Greatly missed today in a world where such artists are very very rare. Cash sung a song-- he turned the water into wine--a song that was part of my road journey into believing in Christ for myself. The music of Johnnny Cash lives on, THANKYOU again for this posting!!

Well, I'm seeing a lot of the same fans commenting all over with these KZbin videos; it's like a "Johnny Cash family". I ran across this upload and I'm truly grateful for you doing so. In all of these videos we see the life and subtle changes in how Johnny would do a song a bit differently at times, but always with his soul. Thanks too for everyone who has commented on my video: "Johnny Cash Me and My Heart".

JohnnyCashfan66, I want to thank you so much for posting this fabulous moment in time. I've never seen it before, and although I was there during the 'Highwayman" tour, I've never seen Johnny perform an entire show by himself. The solo acoustic segment brought a tear to my eye, or was it the smoke? God bless you friend for touching my heart with this act of kindness. I wish you the very best, Lucky

Thank you very much for the warm words. Johnny Cash had an intimacy about him. I feel like when he was on stage, he was singing to each individual person, especially on those solo acoustic songs. Right from the heart and it hits right in the heart. :)
