- Man Gave Names to All the Animals - He saw an animal up on a hill Chewing up so much grass until it was filled He saw milk coming out but he didn't know how Ah, think I'll call it a cow .... 1:23 Next animal that he did meet Had wool on his back and hooves on his feet Eating grass on a mountainside so steep Oh, think I'll call it a sheep .......... He saw an animal as smooth as glass Slithering his way through the grass He saw him dissappear by a tree near a lake Songwriters: Bob Dylan Source: Musixmatch

It wasn't until I heard his cover of Hurt that I started to find an appreciation for Johnny Cash. The video never fails to make me teary eyed whenever I watch it. My father was kind of a fan but I just couldn't stand his voice. But I had this issue with Dylan and Neil Young. In both cases it was another musician covering one of their songs that made me long beyond the voice. In Dylan's case it was Eddie Veder covering Masters of War, and with Young it was Annie Lennox's cover of Don't Let It Bring You Down. I enjoy many of the covers Cash does on his American series, especially In My Life and I Won't Back Down.

Damn, as good as always from Mr. Cash. He came from a ship in a fog one night and landed ashore to make a camp on deserted island we all lived on. Yes!

Bob Dylan's original version was recorded in such a subtile, rich, aerial, even celestial orchestration,it certainly won't ever be equaled, But hearing that great song interpreted by Johnny Cash himself, and in precisely his typically minimalist Cash orchestration is quite something, almost a Space oddity,in the end ... ! A real pleasure to discover that version,Thank you 😊

My grandchildren added a few stanzas He saw a fluffy ball of fur Slinking around the corner with a deep throaty purr This one is not skinny or fat “Ah, I think I’ll call it a cat.” Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago. He saw an animal walking through the forest eating off the trees Living a peaceful life making memories A long trunk with ivory tusks so elegant “Ah I think I’ll call it an elephant” Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago He saw an animal with lots of black spots In the savanna where it’s so hot Lighting quick speed makes her an eata “Ah I think I’ll call her a Cheetah. Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago He saw some animals walking upright and tall They came in sizes big and small All swinging and jumping through the trees ‘Ah, I think I’ll call them monkeys Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago

It was recorded on September 30, 1981 at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville (Studio A). Also recorded were In the Garden and I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day as well as instrumental backing tracks for the 1981 Christmas in Scotland TV-special.

Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning. Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago. He saw an animal that liked to growl, Big furry paws and he liked to howl, Great big furry back and furry hair. "Ah, think I'll call it a bear." He saw an animal up on a hill Chewing up so much grass until she was filled. He saw milk comin' out but he didn't know how. "Ah, think I'll call it a cow." He saw an animal that liked to snort, Horns on his head and they weren't too short. It looked like there wasn't nothin' that he couldn't pull. "Ah, think I'll call it a bull." Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning. Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago. He saw an animal leavin' a muddy trail, Real dirty face and a curly tail. He wasn't too small and he wasn't too big. "Ah, think I'll call it a pig." Next animal that he did meet Had wool on his back and hooves on his feet, Eating grass on a mountainside so steep. "Ah, think I'll call it a sheep." Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, in the beginning. Man gave names to all the animals In the beginning, long time ago. He saw an animal as smooth as glass Slithering his way through the grass. Saw him disappear by a tree near a lake . . .
