Clint Eastwood also sings some of it in ‘Two mules for Sister Sarah” when he’s drunk and Shirley McLean is pulling the arrow out of his shoulder...

I remember this song from the mid-sixties, except it was sung by the Brothers Four. I thought it had a message that needed to be broadcast from the hilltops.

Behind this is a swimney sweep Jack Hall, who was hanged in London for burglary in 1701, or more likely in 1707. At some point popular ballads about him (already popular in 18th century colonial America as much as in the British Isles) turned him into a killer, and in mid-19th century his name was changed to Sam Hall by Scottish singer W. G. Ross(1819-81) in his popular performances.

Just so y'all know. This isn't an original J. Cash song. It's an old folk song from the early 1900's. But you couldn't record your songs in 1905. Lol. Johnny was the man for keeping it alive!
@madhatmike7 жыл бұрын
It's actually quite a bit older than that. Sam was hung in 1707. Google it. Song is from at least 1840's.
@BenPittoors7 жыл бұрын
It's an Irish folk song. But Cash did make it his own.
@Wotsitorlabart2 жыл бұрын
@@BenPittoors It's English. Originally from the early 1700's and called 'Jack Hall' after a thief hanged at London's Tyburn Hill. Later re-written in the mid 1800's as 'Sam Hall' and sung in the music halls.

@@madhatmike Not Sam but Jack Hall. The song was re-written in the mid 1800's for the music halls and renamed ' Sam Hall'.
