Johnny Cash, the one true master of the country music genre, bar none. The modern country boys can't come close and never will. The oldies remain the goodies and Johnny Cash is one hell of an oldie.

I can't stand Johnny's version of Neil Diamond's classic! He can't hit the notes and falls flat though the whole song! I can't believe he won a grammy! They must have felt sorry for him because he was sick. I love Johnny, but *this* isn't a good song for him!
@Selodes10 жыл бұрын
Tbh i like Johnny's version more than Neil's. You might not like that version, but you shouldn't say he didn't deserve a grammy for it. Music is all about personal preference.
@Femalecommaman10 жыл бұрын
Selodes You're right. It *is* about preference. He did it badly though, not being able to hit the notes. It was embarrassing hearing him do it so badly. I like Johnny Cash, but a bad job is a bad job. I don't think he should have gotten a Grammy. That's my opinion. I'm sorry you disagree, but that's how I feel. Btw, what's "Tbh" stand for? To be honest?
@Selodes10 жыл бұрын
I'mAFemale,Age45-54 Tbh = To be honest, yes. Why did he not hit notes? He did his own version of the song, it's different. I just can't see where it is a bad job, i enjoy his version more and i don't hear any missed notes. A cover doesn't need to be like the original song, so it doesn't have to be the same notes as it. That's why it is a cover.
@Femalecommaman10 жыл бұрын
Selodes I understand it's a cover, but he didn't have the *ability* to hit the notes. (he was ill then, wasn't he?) As you said originally, it's a matter of personal preference. I don't care for his singing in this song is all I'm saying. Let's just agree to disagree on this one, OK?
@StormsparkPegasus10 жыл бұрын
Selodes I like Johnny's version much more than Neil's. You're not the only one. I think Johnny actually captures the feeling behind the song better (even though Neil obviously wrote it).

Basically, Johnny Cash has been through a lot in his life at this point. It was getting near the end of his ropes, so to speak, and so he felt like maybe he wasn't loved, truly loved, because he never found someone who could truly understand him. And all his life he has been on his own, a true individual, someone who marched to the beat of their own drums, as the saying goes, and so he felt alone in the sense of someone who is finding their soul-mate, if such a thing can exist in this crazy world. At least that's how I felt he was portraying himself in this song, saying that "I'll be what I am, a solitary man, a solitary man" means he is comfortable on his own. He doesn't need someone else to fulfill his life, though he has made some very good friends along his way. Which is genuine. Even then, he seems to have a dream that he can find unconditional love, something that he finds is so unattainable, that when he says "I know it's been done havin' one girl who loves me,right or wrong, weak or strong" he is being hopeful that even before he dies, he might find someone who truly loves him for who he is and everything that's he's done to get to who he is at the moment of his departure from this world, but maybe not the universe. Who knows where his soul might take him? Hopefully somewhere great. He was born February 26, 1932, and died September 12, 2003. He will be truly missed by all, especially the ones who knew him well.

Both the title of the song, and the fact that it was sung by Johnny Cash fit the episode PERFECTLY. One of John Shepherd's personal belongings in his quarters on Atlantis, was a big Johnny Cash poster. The same poster in fact, which "Detective" Shepherd is seen rolling together just before his shootout near the end of the episode.
