DJ 745 sat down for an exclusive, in-depth reasoning with Johnny Clarke at Big Yard, Orange Street, Downtown Kingston, Jamaica reasoning about the early years with Clancy Eccles, Rupie Edwards, 50 years since the release of None Shall Escape His Judgement, the adverse impact that pressing plants had on his career, his work with Bunny Striker Lee, King Tubbys and much more!
Johnny Clarke is one of Jamaica’s most outstanding vocal talents who grew up in the Kingston ghetto of Whitfield Town and attended Jamaica College. In 1971 he won a talent contest in Bull Bay and his prize was a meeting with the producer Clancy Eccles with whom he recorded his first song, “God Made the Sea and the Sun”, the following year. He was named Artist of the Year in Jamaica in both 1975 and 1976, and became one of the most popular singers on the island, mixing original songs with covers of popular reggae songs by other artists, and mixing roots and lovers-themed material.
