While I'm not disagreeing that they were having an affair, it is not entirely unreasonable to think that close friends, even those of the opposite gender, would be fine being around each other in their night clothes. Especially since you have to consider that she was also perfectly fine with wearing that same nightgown just covered by a robe downstairs to an area where the doorman and other random people who are not close friends might see her. Why does James need a back pack? Again, it is not unreasonable to think that friends, not even just close friends, but friends in general might on occasion stay the night at each others houses and if such an activity is planned one would likely want things like spare clothes, maybe a laptop, toothbrush etc.. a plan to stay over does not automatically mean sex since it is possible for people to crash on one another's couches or in one of the clearly available spare rooms.
