What a player! This guy was the one that opened my eyes to country guitar. I started playing in 1962, trying to play like Keith Richards or George Harrison, and Country & Western was strictly for old people. Here I am at 72 years old, practising every day to learn country style playing. I have played a Gretsch hollow body for many years, and today I treated myself to birthday present, a brand new Telecaster.

Johnny Hiland is not only an all-world guitarist and musician, he is a mighty fine human being! I wish he was my next-door neighbor or something... what a class act! And there's probably not a more-versatile guitarist alive today who excels at darned near every style he tries. Darn good singer and comic, too! Johnny, you rock!!

If Johnny can get through life being blind and be this positive, I can sure as shit get through a few weeks of not being able to walk. His passion for the instrument and general happy attitude is an inspiration. Not to mention the music gave me goosebumps. Well done both of you and keep it up.

In my opinion, Johnny Hiland is the best guitarist I have ever seen up close and in person (And I have seen lots- like Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Neal Schon, BB King). I have seen Johnny several times at Robert's Western World with the Don Kelly Band. Hiland himself said that Steve Vai is the greatest rock guitarist. In return Vai described Johnny as the most versatile guitarist out there.
@PanamaJack6668 жыл бұрын
I would have loved to have seen him playing with Don Kelly. He's not played with Don recently has he? A dude called Porter is playing for him now... or was when I was last in Roberts!
@jasonscott10758 жыл бұрын
The last few times I saw The Don Kelly Band, it was a guitarist named J.D. Simo. Probably haven't seen them in a couple of years though. Kelly describes Simo as one of the best guitarists in Nashville, while he would refer to Hiland as one of the best guitarists in the country.

You should check out some of my latest uploads. I saw J D Simo playing in York (UK) back in April. He's a great player!

I think some of the best guitar players in the world are Doyle Dykes, Uli Roth ,Lenny Breau Chet Atkins. I wouldn’t even consider angus one of the best guitar players because he’s more of a Shredder on the guitar than anything else. For me it’s not how fast a guitar player can play it’s where they can take you while they play, into a completely different universe.

I guess living in Nashville you are probably a little desensitized to good guitar playing, but really, the people in the background just casually going about their business. Here's a hint to learning how to play good, watch and learn from people better than yourself. Especially when you have somebody like Hiland playing.

Commentors are criticising the crowd, which I think is unfair. As a performer myself, sometimes it's nice for the audience to just listen to you. It's good for quality and concentration, not worrying about weather people are enjoying themselves, just trusting them to have fun.
