On another demo the guy demoing also mentioned how he can “feel” the difference. You can hear the difference as well. It sounds so much better at a lower voltage. I’m sold on one of these Brown Boxes. Thank you!

At 0:59 Johnny mentions that his amp is very hot. I would blame his playing style for that :)

Just picked one up 2 weeks ago and very first gig was reading 126v. My tone never sounded better after dialing down 10%. Life changing piece of gear for all guitarists.

What a difference !!! 110 volts nailed it.
@MaxPaws7 жыл бұрын
No, it does NOT "save" the power tubes. The reduced voltages cause the other components to work harder actually putting more stress on them and the tubes. Not generally a problem for 50's era Tweed amps, when everything was designed for 110v, but by the mid-late 60's that wasn't the case, and certainly not the case for modern amps. You may like the sound of the voltage sag better, but it's not going to be easy on your amp in the long term. My house is about 124v, so the Brown Box would definitely be a good idea, again to meet the design specs of my amps.

So a amp made to use 110 it's a good idea I'm using a 64 bassman and it says 110 on the chasis
@alanezersky9284 жыл бұрын
@@matthewgrimm5383 You are correct. Check patent drawings and add up the rail totals...most are designed for 110. It does save tubes as it keeps them from red plating, and you get to hear your amp as designed to be heard. Additionally, the transformer is not grounded like in a Variac - so no noise is introduced at all. I also use it on modern tube and solid state amps...set for no reduction in power...just to keep the power clean. I use if for every amp in my stable. I have a stash of tubes, and have only replaced one in an SWR Super Redhead preamp section in 4 years.

have heard of the voltage sag effect when using a 9v battery on a pedal..sometimes sounds great. I geuss this the same principle. I wonder how safe this for your amp long-term. Most caps, resistor, valvess and diodes etc have a maximum value rating. If you exceed that they release the magic smoke. never thought about what happens if you under power your gear..because we are generally limited by what we get out of the wall. interesting concept for sure...nice playin' Johnny

Thx very much for watching, and your comment. I'm afraid I'm not quite knowledgeable enough on the topic to answer your question, but there is a blog on amprx's website, as well as a ton of info. I hope that helps you find your answer.
@raindogred7 жыл бұрын
yeah checked out their site. This device is for vintage valve amps that were designed to run on 110v, not 120v like we have today. It doesn't really mention what effect "under-powering" would have on modern amps.Will keep digging..cheers
@alanezersky9284 жыл бұрын
@@raindogred It works for all amps...you just may not need to use the power reduction section (depending upon what your amp requires from the wall by engineering design)
@mikieknight66073 жыл бұрын
Todays wall voltage is why too hot for older amps that were designed to run on 110 volts. Increased load has forced power companies to raise nominal voltages on the power grid. I've seen over 130 volts in some cases. After the amps power transformer steps the voltage up and rectifies it to DC the voltage is way over what it should be.
@mikesharpsongs Жыл бұрын
I am a huge fan of immediate attack/response. Does the voltage reduction negatively effect the feel of play in terms of that immediate responsiveness, or is it essentially a balancing act based upon the choice of percentage?
@Tonetwisters4 жыл бұрын
I have to say, that after playing for some 58 years, I cannot hear all that much "influence" of the BrownBox on the amp he is playing through ... not $349 worth, anyway.
@willellis19464 жыл бұрын
It’s not really a “hear” thing so much as it is “feel”. Along with saving the tubes and internals of the amp, it adds sag and sponginess to the feel when you play.
@kevindean13272 жыл бұрын
@@willellis1946 it's going to cost me $500 Canadian when I eventually buy this but it worth it on saving tubes alone!!!

This is something that requires schooling. Check out ohms law. It’s going to do your tubes a favor and most importantly your primary and secondary transformer.

I'm looking at the brown box. I have a Furman PL Plus II power conditioner in my rack. I plug everything into it. a pedal board with 2 voodoo labs powering 16 pedals then into a aby switch into a marshall tube amp (DSL100) and a fender twin reverb (65 reissue). what is the link of the power conditioner and the brown box? can I use the conditioner similar to the brown box? It regulates my output to consistent conditioned power but I cant adjust it. would the brown box have any effects on my pedalboard. any info on better use of gear is appreciated. thanks, jim

@williamratcliffe78332 жыл бұрын
@@jordandenton5682 It does absolutely nothing except fry amps.....I tried various vintage tube amps, as they ALL sounded better without it. The worst part is this actually fried the circuit of an amp I was using, and I had to pay a pretty penny to have it fixed. Two reputable electricians asked what I done differently. I told them I used an amped brown box. I brought it to them and they tested it and said this was certain death for an amp....The “flexible attenuation options” is simply false advertising. The output voltmeter doesn’t work......If you’re into destroying a classic tube amp, then this is perfect.
