This 1983 Musicman HD150 amp belonged to Sterling Ball and was given by him to chicken pickin' country guitar virtuoso, Johnny Hiland. Now it's on my bench. Let's take a closer look at what might be wrong with it and also what secrets it contains!

Started watching this because of my early '77 212 HD-130 Musicman which carried me through 4 years of touring and always worked. Big rooms, small rooms, had more than enough clean head room. In fact, I never had to run the volume higher than 3 - it got too loud. Over time put a couple of sets of tubes in it, but that's it. Fantastic piece of equipment. The video was really good until Johnny Hiland started playing through it - then it went to another level entirely!! Watched a number of his vids as well. One of the best players around.

I had the pleasure of being front row center at a Gatemouth Brown concert and he had 2 Music Man 212 HD 130's tilted back on the stage sort of like montors ... both amps were miked and cranked up ... because they did not point directly at the audience they were not offensive ... Great Show! ... with that being said my take has always been that these amps were like a mix of Roland Jazz Chorus and fender twin which could be why Jazz Players and Session Pickers loved them ... Much Love to Johnny Hiland for picking on this video ... Thanks!

I worked with Johnny's dad at the paper mill in our home town. I've known Johnny since he was a young whipper snapper. His dad invited me up to their house one day to play a little bluegrass/country music. Johnny was a pretty well known performer then (still in grade school I think). Little did I know then that he would go on to become one of the finest guitar players in the business.

The High/Low power switch simply cuts the B+ plate voltage to the output tubes in half (from approx. 700Vdc to just under 400Vdc). This results in approximately 1/2 power.

The cathode only needs to be above the DC value of the Grid in order to properly bias the tube with the equivalent of a negative voltage on the grid compared to the cathode. this can be viewed as a common grid (common base for solid state) amp. The impedance of the cathode is very low compared to the grid. The reason for this as I recall is that the bias tracked with the input signal so that in idle the tubes drew nearly no idle current & as the signal increased, so did the bias as it tracked the needs of the tubes. This led to tubes that would have a super lifetime compared to standard biased amps. I have had Music Man amps come in with tubes that almost looked original or at the very least old enough to be way past their normal lifetime. Very nice video as usual. Love the channel & learn a lot about the tonal mods that I typically do not get into. Thanx for another good one (albeit a year ago).

The way the finals are driven are interesting. That would be similar to "grounded grid" designs. They have a high amount of negative feedback, so low gain but very clean/linear.

Hi Brad. Love your channel, both informative and entertaining! Looking at the schematic, you were right with your first hunch about the trimpot biasing the driver transistors. It's to set the crossover point/quiescent current in the Class AB amp, just like tubes. Generally you'd need to refer to the gain curve graph in the spec sheets to determine the minimum current at which it enters the linear zone and set it for that (using V/R73 or V/R81 to measure output current). In fact, you could also consider the power section to be "cathode biased" and use the same resistors to measure current through the cathode, and you're basically using the trimpot (via the transistors) to bias the 6L6s. Just thought I'd mention this so if another one comes across your desk, you'll be able to bias to a measurement rather than a guess (although going to the point of cutoff and then back a little bit, which is essentially what you did, would obviously get you in the ballpark). One of my favourite channels, keep it up!

I picked it up and read the name, never heard of this guy before, figured it was some local guy who dropped his pick. So I get home and Google the name...HOLY CRAP!! This guy can play ANYTHING!! Amazing guitar skills and he seems like a nice guy. What's the chance that a guitar player drives to the mall and in the parking spot he pulls into there just happens to be a guitar pick there? Pretty crazy. Anyways, great vid, Brad, you're really stepping up lately!!

At about 36:37 I thought I heard a bit of Danny Gatton's Harlem Nocturne ( cover of Duke Ellington), at least in tone? I wish Johnny would cover that song it's a master work by Danny G. I'm stinkin' awe struck by Johnny, thanks Brad for a great video, well done. You're hooked up now.

Can't believe I missed this one!! How cool that you got to meet the dude. I mean geez, whats the likelihood of repairing a Piece of equipment for a famous guitarist and then getting him to demo it, and Icing on the damn cake when you can show him something that he didn't even know about his own amp. Great video Brad, Almost as cool as building a dulcimer with your daughter. Keep it up, even though youtube sucks!

You have the schematic, but what you don't have is the *board layout* diagram. It's common for 70s and 80s hifi service-manuals to include a component-layout drawing, but typically only for the *foil* side of the circuit board, not the component side; and some manufacturers didn't bother to silkscreen the component numbers on the board itself next to the individual parts. Makes the process of troubleshooting a malfunctioning stereo into an exercise in frustration!

I've been using Music Man 100 RD amps for almost 40 years. Heavy rock, clean blues, heavy metal....its does it all.Plus it will clean up and sound amazing. I run it through an EV 12-L Speaker . I made my own cabinet for my road amp but one of my back ups is the stock two piece version. These amps are amazing....and a nice, well kept secret.

Driving a power tube from the cathode, is a clever thing,as you don´t need to superimpose the negative control grid bias to the audio signal, and also you don´t need much voltage swing on the driver, but you need current, that´s why they used power transistors, you can easily supply curent with transistors....creating a large voltage swing with a superimposed negative DC voltage is another story.... Also have you noticed that the output stage is directly coupled? It seems that they also use the cathode to bias the tube ;)
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 5 жыл бұрын
Great comment. And yes, looks like there would be some bias on the cathode too. Neat circuit. For guys demanding clean, seems like this is about as good as it got for the time.

My MusicMan used to over-heat all the time, but I was gigging in the Virgin Islands and the power was brown and spikey. Once I put a fan in it and bought an expensive Triplite power conditioner/battery thingey, it never gave me any more trouble. Great pedal platform. Fuzz Face and Memory Man. That was a long time ago!

Always like the MM's. Had two twins that I would run through a stereo delay. One on the stage left and t'other on stage right. SWOOSH! The wiring on that one was text book mil spec. All bent at right angles. Doug would freek!! Super nice amp! Johnny Hiland is a fantastic all around fella. Was hoping you would do dueling flanjo's with him. Great video Brad!!

Very nice! Thank you for the walk through on this amp. This helped me repair a Musicman 75W. It's nearly identical to the one in your video except mine has only two tubes. This amp was presumably affected by a lightning storm and was not producing any sound. Only a mild hum that would not change with the volume. I found one of the TL072 op amps was shorted across the VCC. This drew down the entire +16/-16 power supply circuit.

I purchased a Musicman amp new in the 70's. Mine was a dual speaker amp cabinet like a twin reverb amp from Fender. The high low switch let you get a cranked overdriven tone without blowing your fans out the back door of the bar. I rarely ever needed the high setting as that thing had serious output!

This amp seems really similar to a Peavey Heritage VTX I once had. Similar circuitry with a built in phase shifter, dual power switch, and 4 6L6GCs at the output. Built like a tank! And the phase shifter circuit had the same exact feature (Freezing the oscillation) as well.
