Here I am again, in 2020 listening to this fantastic song, sung by the even more fantastic Johnny Mathis. Within seconds of starting this video I am in tears, with chills up and down my spine. Johnny is electrifying. He is as deep, expressive, and passionate as any singer could possibly be. This is not the music of easy-listening romantic love songs. This is the music of a a deeply expressive artist who sings from the human soul.

Mike Douglas said it best, "isn't he something!" That voice that the entire world recognizes immediately. Thanks so much for posting. So clear too for 1978.

Singing doesn't get any better than this. Mathis sings with so much expression, depth and passion. His breath control is phenomenal, as he holds and sustains notes through one or more measures, holding over to the next before he takes a breath. His vibrato is as always, a vibrant electric quiver, as he sings notes in perfect pitch. He sells this fantastic song through his personality and his incredible talent, and the listener takes this weekend journey with him...a few moments of bliss and wild abandon over the weekend, with no regrets on Monday. Mathis has always been one of the finest singers of the last 7 decades. I've heard him live twice, and met him. He is a big-hearted, kind, thoughtful and generous man. As we fans all lined up to shake his hand and get an autograph, he ignored us as he walked over to an elderly war veteran in a wheelchair. Johnny knelt beside the aged war hero, and gave him full attention, holding his hand and expressing his appreciation for the aging soldier's attendance at his concert. Wow. Johnny is a man of pure class, dignity and magic. What a singer, and what a guy. Most people don't know that he was a gifted athlete, chosen to go to the Olympics, but he decided to become a singer instead. Those of us who truly appreciate his talent and generosity will always love him. He is a star, and he's one of the finest singers in the history of popular music.

thanks for pointing me here, great as always. I love the older stuff as well and his opinion that Denice Williams saved his career says more about the western world than it does about talent. Thanks.

Johnny is not 'one of the finest singers..' he is THE finest singer - as Barbra Streisand said - there are good singers, great singers - and THEN: there is Johnny Mathis! We shall never see the likes again - there's numerous Elvis, Frank etc sing alikes doing the rounds - there is NO one who can do JM concert as NO one else can sing like him!

They just don't come any better than Johnny Mathis. This performance is incredible! Another one that I dare say may be even better....if that is possible, check out 'Johnny Mathis on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" He sings Pieces of Dreams. It is simply unbelievable. In Las Vegas in 1983 we ran into each other in Neimans we were both trying on sport jackets. He made me do my impression of him for 6 of his friends and other costumers. He was at my show the night before at the Dunes Hotel.

I made this comment below three years ago. I just listened to this video again, and I'm even more impressed now, realizing that almost of Johnny's songs were romantic love songs, crooned by this virtuoso singer. Rarely if ever have we heard Mathis cut loose like he does in "Over The Weekend". This is Johnny at his most passionate, and he delivers with depth, soul and power. I think this tune also has significant meaning for any gay man who lived a closeted life in a button-down world who longs to leave the confinement of city life over a weekend where he can cut loose to love, and have pure fun with his lover. This tune says it all whether you're gay or straight. To escape to a magical place with a lover for a couple of days. Fantastic, and Johnny paints this picture so vividly, so deeply, so realistically. I'm sure he is singing from personal experience. God, what a singer. What a fantastic singer. You bring tears to my eyes and chills up and down my spine. Johnny, you are, you always have been and you will always be the best. It's a privilege to hear you sing.

Johnny is the only person who can sing such a difficult yet fantastic song. He always takes challenging songs and gives us a wonderful performance. Thanks for this excellent video 19rebel57.

Pure fantastic music ! Just a singer and a piano. No band, no orchestra, two guys performing a brilliantly crafted piece of music. Mathis fills the theater with soaring lyrical energy, then brings it down to a pensive sad reflective ballad, only to burst forth with a final rememberance of his passionate fling with his lover. Truly great music. Even greater singing. Wow. Thrilling.

My first "break" came in February of 1972 when I filled in for John's pianist. At first rehearsal, John came out and sat down on the piano bench next to me. He wanted to run through "Over the Weekend" with just him and me. He asked if I could create a "piano concerto"-type ending on the spot. I did; he liked it and left. Conductor Roy Rogosin leaned over to me and said, "That's his way of saying hello!" Thanks for this video of the Mike Douglas Show 1975 Jim Barnett, Conductor/pianist 1974-78

I was introduced to this amazing song by the great Bob Anderson who is a terrific Vegas singer, who made a name for himself at the Dunes doing impressions. He did Mr Mathis singing this song. I am so thrilled to hear the original. The song is absolutely gorgeous. Of course the singing does not hurt. The pianist is terrific too.

Great song JM first recorded on his Mercury album “This is Love.” This rendition has a much different feel than the recording. Of course, there was the lone pianist here. But, the lyrics are very personal.

How Mike Douglas, who was also a 'singer', had the nerve to come out and take a bow with Johnny after Johnny delivered one of the most impassioned, heartfelt, powerful, and touching songs ever sung on Television, I'll never know. Douglas should have crawled out on bended knee and begged to kiss Mathis' hand after this performance. Johnny knew he knocked it out of the park, and anyone who knows music realizes that they will never hear any man sing like this again. Ever. This was an exceptional and extraordinary moment in TV history. Thank God it was recorded.

I also saw Bob Anderson perform this song. Mr. Anderson basically said that he did not care whether the audience knew the song, he wished to do it accompanied by only the piano player (Vince Falcone). Watching this video, you can understand why Mr. Anderson wished to share. Bob Anderson is not known well by present day Las Vegans, but he remains the greatest lounge act ever in this city. Sad his name is not on a billboard at a major casino, so many more can hear lesser known gems such as this.

Always associated this tune with cabaret and Mabel Mercer until hearing Dave Lambert inject it with with a touch of modern jazz. He took it completely out of its comfortable cabaret neighborhood and effectively placed it in a fresh, new setting. That was memorable.

The piano player is excellent, but a little to loud at times because it takes away from the exceptional job Johnny does.
