Sixty-one years after first hearing the song, likely on the six-transistor (Wow!) portable radio that my folks bought me for a birthday present, I now know that "Running Bear" was written by The Big Bopper! Thank you, KZbin.

I was fortunate enough to see him as a youngster. This was probably 8-10 years after he had a hit with Running Bear. I was able to hook up with him in Branson and he would stay in touch with me as he might be coming through the area. I remember him as nothing more than a gentleman. I was asking him about playing guitar for him on the road. He will truely be missed. GOD BLESS and REST IN PIECE MY FREIND.

Basically Bobby Vees band - sons Tommy Vee on Bass and Jeff Vee on drums, Ar Kriegel on lead guitar, Marvin Short on sax, Jeff Olson on piano. They made a pretty good career being one of the truest, most authentic and energetic backing bands for acts of the 50s 60s era

I always think of this song ..as racial song.. hearing on the radio as kid during the sixty's..it still gets me..I had native friend made me see it as remark toward his people..how White's painted them in the movies.as they painted my people too.. White's playing us as well other cultures in the movies..it was at the time of white America..

nothing 'racial' about the song. It's a love story

Sad disappointment for some who first heard and witnessed the singing of "Running Bear" on television ~1959. If an artist is going to perform a song, especially for a special occasion, please sing it the way people enjoyed it and paid money to hear it originally. And, to honor the author of the song- sing it the way it was written. For anyone who is going to react and reply defensively to me, please view the 1959 version of Mr. Preston performing this song on TV. The performance and song hugely affected my 6 year old brother then and afterwards. My brother tragically, suddenly died in 1978. He would have been disappointed, I'm sure, to hear the way the song was sung in this 2009 performance.
