Johnny is a very great singer. Many very good songs. Poor side of Town, Secret Agent Man, Baby I need yr Loving, Mountain of Love, Seventh Son and more. Unfortunately he became forgotten but he's getting attention on KZbin. Dig his voice much.

Great reaction to a classic song by a great artist, Jayy. Bob Dylan has said that of all the cover versions of his songs, Johnny River's version of Positively Fourth Street is his favorite. Other great hits for Johnny are Summer Rain, Poor Side of Town, Secret Agent Man, Mountain of Love, Where Have all the Flowers Gone, Rockin' Pneumonia, and Maybellene.

Johnny could sing different genres of music including pop, folk, blues & rock 'n' roll. He had a lot of hits during the 60's-70's such as "The Poor Side Of Town", "Maybellene", "Mountain Of Love", "The Seventh Son", "Secret Agent Man", "Baby I Need Your Lovin'", "Summer Rain", "Midnight Special", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "Slow Dancing Swayin' To The Music", "Rockin' Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu" etc.

I have always loved this song by Johnny Rivers and yes, you shoild hear more of him because he was great. He is one of those singers thst because we had so many great musicians, he sometimes got "lost in the shuffle". Also, if you get a chance, relisten to this song - I think you missed who Marie was ... at least you did not react to and I think you would have. God bless you

I lost all respect for Johnny Rivers after he heard Elvis' tape at Graceland of this song and then quickly recorded it with Elvis' arrangement and put it out before Elvis did. He was never invited back to Graceland after that. Elvis was upset, but said if Johnny needs a hit that badly, let him have it. What a jerk! I had an autograph from Johnny and burned it after that incident.

I don't understand why you burned his photo, but I didn't understand why my sister threw Jim Nabors ( Gomer Pyle ) records in the trash either. My sisters love Elvis I like his music also, but I like Johnny Rivers tone and voice for this song.

​​@@andrewcoleman6349, I burned it because he pretended to be Elvis' friend and Elvis invited him to his home and shared a tape with him that was to be his next release (Memphis). Johnny stole his song, his arrangement and rushed it out to beat Elvis' release. Elvis stopped his release and later it was included on one of his albums. He was a jerk.

@@jennyjorgensen9935 From what you say, Elvis didn't sound like he was that mad. Let's see. What was this, '64? Elvis never had another hit after that, did he? Wiki says Johnny used Lonnie Mack's pacing and improvisations. Johnny did the song live at the Whiskey. He probably didn't even know it was going out as a single. It's not like he recorded it as a single. Turned out to be Johnny's first top ten hit at number 2.

@@micah3823 Remind me not to confide anything with you. Lonnie's version was an instrumental that didn't make in the Pop charts. I haven't heard it, but Johnny's version sounds a lot like Elvis'. At least he didn't steal the heavy drums from the intro. I don't think Johnny's brain started ticking while listening to Elvis, but you can't really say he didn't steal anything. Elvis didn't release his version until 1965, and just as an album track. I don't know if that was because Johnny's version came out but that would be my guess.
