Johnny Taylor - Jody's Got Your Girl From Mel Stuart Wattstax (1973)

This was filmed at the Total Experience club in Los Angeles, California. George Semper was musical director and part of Johnnie Taylor's LA band! Legendary house band at Total Experience including guys like Ray Brother Puff Johnson, and Bob Farrell not in this video. Personell - George Semper - keyboards, James Gadson - drums, Phillip Bailey - Bongo's anyone know guitar? Not sure.There's one other televised performance of this same band minus some horns and with George's back to the audience on Soul Train! ENJOY!

"Aint no use in going home, Jody's got your girl and gone...." Used to march to this in basic training back in 86 not knowing where it came from. Now I know!

95 myself. Unless you grew up during this era or had a family member that played this, most would not know where it came from.

I marched to this in Basic Training also. In the summer of 1966 at Ft. Polk La. four years before this song came out. I guess my Drill Sargent should have gotten some credit for the song also. Just heard it on oldies radio today for the first time. Good song.

This is what goes down when you jam 25 great jazz/soul/funk musicians into a small LA club and front them with a soul master...Watts, meet Memphis!
@DavidRichardson956 жыл бұрын
I just stumbled upon this version right here. I dead wanna see _Wattstax_ in full. This version here rocks. Great thing that I gathered from watching the archival footages from these legendary and iconic artists was that during the '70s, _everyone_ had their own identity and sound: From Curtis Mayfield to Donny Hathaway to James Brown to Sly to J5 to the Tempts to Johnnie to Aretha and the list goes on and on. RIP Johnnie Taylor. He was a fellow Taurean just like me.

It's an amazing document of the era. Taylor and Richard Pryor and the STaples and Albert King and Rufus Thomas..and the AA crowd at the concert.. And yes..so many of the artists had their own sound..like many jazz artists are identifiable after 3 notes from this era as well. Why? They didn't graduate from cookie cutter music programs (no slight against them, but they do tend to homogenize). They learned on the bandstands. at the clubs, on the STREETS! It came out in their music as surely as the soul came out of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters when they sang..their experiences imbued their art with the reality of their existence. You used to be able to hear the regions of the USA in the artists. They were shaped by that. Modern artists are shaped more by a world wide aesthetic and are less distinctive. But change is always there...the pendulum may swing back. Nothing stays the same for long.

Johnny was so FONKY!!! I love that stank leg stomp on the one he does at 1:10. James Brown did it also but James was more forceful and determined. James did it to lead his band and keep his drummers focused on the one, Johnny did it because it felt good and let them put it wherever they wanted.
