I don't care what you all say MGS4 had one of the best stories ever. It was so satisfying and sad to the core, I shed a tear watching Big Boss die at the end and watching Solid Snake contemplate suicide was really hard to watch because I grew up on this series and essentially Snake himself. It was really good closure to one of the best franchises ever created.
@Arbron6 жыл бұрын
The games all do have strong stories. I hate all the retcons, plot holes and inconsistencies but the raw emotion behind this series is undeniable. That said, this game's story is the biggest mess of them all. If nothing else, why the hell is Shadow Moses still unsecured? The moment MGS1 was over the Patriots would have been ALL OVER that place to capture/destroy everything. The idea of REX even still being there completely smashes suspension of disbelief.

@Gadget-Walkmen6 жыл бұрын
Kojima's admitted jealously in what? What the hell are you talking? What Jealously is there? And Snake's characterization didn't get ruined in any way, it's still the same in 1 and 2. If you honestly except a man to be devoid of emotions and just pull a "cool" attitude from being to end and just be "Macho Man", than that's not a character, that a fucking archetype with no humanizing traits. (But I guess you prefer stuff like that given your name and icon) And a kid being good with computer trope is something that was a thing before cowboy bebop like in Jurassic Park and in Voltron , so nobody stole anything. And for all the other shit that you pointed out just seems ridiculously. your complaining about that shit in Mgs4, but in MGS 1 and 2 we have otacon crying his ass off, a guy who can summon fucking birds from his mind, and have a BDSM psychic solider man telling you that you like castlevania yet nobody complains about any of that stuff! He's writes for all the games he's been director for, and I'm not seeing any reason for why he should stop for the great narratives he's written before. It's practically impossible for anyone to create/director a new game without having any story implications. The only reason way MGS4 narrative is a mess is because it wasn't supposed to exist and Kojima had to come up with answers to questions he never intended. And this game was supposed to finish off the series which is why so many cutscenes are here to address everything. You would have known that if you did any background research ,but it seems you don't like to go into any of the research needed to understand why things are the way they are. Their are plenty of great narratives that kojima wrote on his own like Policenauts and MG 2: Soild Snake for the MSX. So like I said, what comes off as misinformed.

I understood some things because I had knowledge of the lore from my cousins and general nerdism but many things went over my head. I expected this however and I actually liked Guns of the Patriots. The next MGS game I would go on to play would be Peace Walker which I also enjoyed. I think MGS 4 was a good starting point for me because it allows for a more action oriented approach and I have never liked many stealth games, especially ones where you can't kill guards etc with stealthy means like Deus Ex Human Revolution. I'm also not fond of an overheard camera which was also a reason I avoided earlier MGS games.

I'm surprised people thought this review would be any longer or as long as Johnny's Sonic 06 review. The story talk was just as long, but the gameplay part is upgraded from previous games, not too much to talk about but still enough to talk about some differences and whatnot. Great review overall, I look forward to Rising.

I've read plenty of criticism of the series for its confusing over-the-top and being very goofy in a lot of those story ideas, but I still love this series because its characters are thought out and I find all the anime stuff to be awesome

Funny how MGS 4 pretty much pioneered the whole PlayStation Exclusives formula of Narrative Driven Games, games whose main focus is to tell engaging stories rather than just showcasing fun gameplay, The Last Of Us, Horizon, God of War (2018), all of the Quantic Dream games and yes even Hideo Kojima’s own Death Stranding.

I love how Armstrong took a jab at this game with "nanomachines, son". While I don't agree that this is the best game in the series, it has the best gameplay up to that point, and I'm glad you realised that.

MGS4 was my first Metal Gear game... and I absolutely loved it. I loved it so much, that it inspired me to play the rest of the series, and now MGS3 is my favorite game of all time, with MGS1 and Peace Walker coming close. So, the fact that MGS4 is a huge nostalgia filled flashback trip doesn't mean it's not a good game. Sure, I was totally lost on what was going on in the story and who the hell everybody were, but to be fair, it's the finale to a long running series, and it's technically the 7th game including Metal Gear 1 and 2 and Portable Ops. So jumping into the 7th game in the series without playing the others is bound to leave you asking questions. I will say that I feel like the game lacks it's own identity. For example, when you think about any other game in the series, you have a clear idea of what made that game stand out, like MGS3 was in a jungle and you fight the Shagohad, MGS1 was on Shadow Moses and you fight Rex, MGS2 was on Big Shell and you fight Ray, but when you think about MGS4... you think about all the flashbacks. So that's where it's lacking in my opinion.

Actually what happened was in MGS2 that was Liquid’s real hand and he did control Ocelot. But in between MGS2 and 4, Ocelot got control of his mind back, then he removed that hand and replaced it with a normal prosthetic hand. But since Liquid controlling him was important for his master plan, he fooled everyone into thinking he was still being controlled.

9:55 Also apparently in between the Big Shell incident and now Snake apparently joined the Assassins Brotherhood. So does this mean that Ocelot is a Templar? Or Zero since honestly the Patriots does sound like something the Templars would cook up.

I know people complain about how long the cutscenes are but I always insist that this is a good thing considering that this is supposed to be the finale to Solid Snake and his allies story so its important not to leave any loose ends and give almost every character a satisfying conclusion

The story has problems but the gameplay and fan service are incredible. i wish you could skip the credits and the sniper rifle should have a silencer. and you should be able to buy chaff grenades. beside that i love this game.
@jtcarwile5 жыл бұрын
'Silencer' is a wildly inaccurate misnomer. In real life, sound suppressors decrease range and accuracy. Hopefully you're smart enough to understand now, why suppressors are not used on dedicated long guns or "sniper" rifles.

I was not ready for "RAGE" at 29:07 Well done. I will have to say, it's rather obvious that MGS4 was meant to be a "Final Hurrah" for the series, even if you still have Peace Walker and MGS5 to be released later on, but be that as it may, it sorta makes it's inaccessibility justified in my eyes. Now, not being ported to PS4 and/or PC is another thing.

Considering that Big Boss also treasured the individual's ability to fight for one's own ideals rather than simply because one was told to as a result of how he was used by his superiors during operation Snake Eater, which eventually lead into him breaking away from the US to form the independent MSF and finally, Outer Heaven, I doubt he'd appreciate the dehumanizing nature of the SOP system where soldiers are nothing but cogs in the automated machine.

One thing that confuses me about the Metal Gear series is it's focus on nuclear warfare which has long been theorized to led to humanities extinction. So I don't get as to why they don't develop a weapon with the power of a nuke but with few of the drawbacks and arm their Metal Gears with that. Also, once said Metal Gears were developed, why not move onto something like Super Soldiers so that they could have far more durable pilots. They seemed to have started it with Solid, Solidus and Liquid Snakes but it is obviously a failure due to their rapid aging.

It's a shame that after 12 years this game is still a PS3 exclusive. I mean, you can't even play it in PS4! How's that possible??!! In 2008 this was THE PlayStation exclusive! Guns of the Patriots is to Metal Gear Solid what The Last Jedi is to Star Wars, both are about old legends from a past era letting the next generation have their impact on the world and understanding that their glory days are over. It will be the legacy generation that truly sets the world right this time and while they can certainly guide and help them that's simply the way things are now. And of course both should not be experienced unless you are a MGS/Star Wars fan since both rely so heavily on the previously established continuity that any newcomers will be absolutely lost.
