I feel like it's also important to note: you can get stuck halfway through the game if you don't have Cream the Rabbit on your team. She's an optional recruitable character but the only other character with a level 3 fly ability. This means at the point where Tails isn't on your team, if you don't have Cream, you can't advance any further and you'll have to start the entire game all over again . That's a pretty big oversight

I bought this the day it came out as a kid and had a blast playing it; I beat it multiple times. Obviously it's not something I'd revisit, but I have a soft spot for it. And hey, did you know Shade the Echidna won a Nintendo Power Award for best new character back in '08? Also, the reason the sound design and music is so awful is because Bioware stopped developing the game at a late beta stage; they were bought out by EA at the time and had *technically* fulfilled their contract to Sega, leaving huge chunks of the game unfinished, including, well, literally all the music and sound effects. Sega literally used fan made midis to fill out the soundtrack.

I was already an adult at the time this game came out. 20 years old to be exact, but even then, I actually enjoyed the game quite a lot. I played it for hours on end. Didn't want to stop playing, but of course life gets in the way and I was in junior college at the time much like Johnny was in college back then. However, after beating the game, I had a hard time getting back into it. I did start playing it again sometime many years ago, like around 2010 or 2011 or something, but didn't finish my second playthrough for some reason. I still don't know what reason I stopped playing. I might have just been really busy at the time. I did go to junior college and I worked a full time job back then so that might have had something to do with it.

Sega should really take another shot at making a Sonic RPG. One of the most popular aspects of the series (and the main reason I like it so much) is the numerous and diverse characters. If they were to do a by-the-numbers RPG that doesn't experiment with anything radically different, has a good battle system and story, puts the focus on its characters and their development, and doesn't have any glaring problems that cripple the experience, I'd jump right on board.

Your message at the beginning helped me a lot. I made a horrible decision of dropping out of college last year without any plan to help me both mentally and financially. From when I dropped out of college, I was motivated to try my best to create a comic (which I did 6 months *after* I dropped out) until I became unmotivated with little to no personal growth for at least 5 months. I'm always the person who likes to think about doing something, but always never actually did something to make it happen right away. Right now, I have a job to help me financially, still working on my comic, but most important to me, kept on moving with my life and artworks. I'm still somewhat aimless, but I am working on my "goal" better than what I did last year. Also, your review videos are the best for entertainment and constructive criticism.

Johnny, I only recently discovered your channel and haven't been with you for the nine-year (so far!) hall, but I subscribed because I admire that whatever you say in regards to story, gameplay, experience, nostalgia is 100% genuinely how you feel. 12:07 um I'm sorry Ken Panders, but how big of a fucking ego do you have to have to sue a company that owns and makes games of the same exact charcters you were just writing comic books for just over a similar story!? I know copyright infringement is a big deal and even I wouldn't like it if someone stole all of my ideas for stories and characters. But it just feels like Ken was stretching way too far for a lawsuit just because the game had a similar story to his. Last time I checked, it's ok to take an existing type of story or borrow elements of a story and changing it up so it can be something completely different and I think Ken failed to understand that. I'm sorry, but Ken was just a writer for the Sonic comic books and I just think it's really stupid to sue the company that owns the rights of those characters over a story he thought was stolen. Even tho he's techinally someone who had to make an agreement with SEGA, who owns Sonic, just so he can have permission to use the Sonic characters in the comic books he wrote for it. He's not even the creator of any of the characters in the games or in this game for that matter. He simiply could've just taken a few minutes to think about it and just say, "you know what, it's not that big of a deal. It's just a minor story for a spin off game that's barely canon to the Sonic lore to begin with. So why should I waste time trying to sue Sega for it?" It could've been over like that before it began if you actually thought about it Ken. I'm sorry dude, but come on, did you really had to sue Sega just for one game that's considered mediocre and non-canon to the Sonic lore just because it happens to have a similar story to yours?

When this game came out, I was in fifth grade (in fact, I specifically remember playing it in the car ride to Michael's to get supplies for making a model of the cell for a project). I remember liking the Rusty Ruin remix (not that I knew where it came from at the time) and the battle themes, but I also didn't use headphones at the time. Now, almost ten years later, one of my degrees in college is music and it literally hurts my ears to listen to this game's sounds. I don't think majority of the compositions are bad, either; it's the awful soundfont mixed with the terrible sound quality. I know the DS isn't known for crisp-sounding music, but even Sonic Rush sounds better because the music was professionally produced and compressed in a way that made it sound somewhat decent. They clearly rushed this out to get it done in time, and it really sucks that Sonic games are always (ironically...?) being held down by time constraints.

This game was brilliant! I don't see why so many people hate it. Yeah, the music isn't amazing, it is controlled via touch screen, the combat system isn't great, and the plot has its flaws. But does that really make it a bad game? I mean.. it's the only offical Sonic RPG as of today, which is honestly pretty sad; it also has a very unique style of combat which involves clicking and dragging circles (I found that to be quite fun), which people don't really seem to think about much. In most RPGs, you choose your move and which enemy you wish to attack, then you wait for your next turn. A lot of the Mario RPGs have action commands (button pressed during moves that, if pulled off, will deal extra damage), which gives you something to do whilst waiting for the next turn; whereas SCTDB has the circle-clicking combat that gets more and more difficult towards the end of the game instead. The last 3-4 chapters of the game aren't so good, and I feel that the dialogue also starts to bore, but the final fight of the game was extremely fun and unexpected; and something I wish more developers did. I've played a lot of the "normal" Sonic platformers and can honestly say that I enjoyed this far more than any of them. Perhaps it was because I grew up playing RPGs, or simply just the fact that I'm not keen on the repetition of the platformers. I was also quite disappointed by Sonic Lost World, too, which I bought because of its similarities to Super Mario Galaxy; but it turned out nothing alike and with some pretty difficult controls that have put me off from finishing it. Just my thoughts..

Here's a quick fun point: It's implied that Ix is actually the strongest villain in the entire Sonic-verse, aside from Eggman with the Time Eater. The reason he was so easily beaten as Super Sonic (barring any development issues) is that his "super form" was actually a DOWNGRADE. It destroyed the cybernetic half of him. Granted, that would regenerate in time, but that's really the only reason the battle was crazy easy. To give you an idea, "super forms" are the lowest form of Chaos Emerald mastery, since they give a temporary boost that requires a fuel source AND all 7 emeralds. Only masters like Shadow or Sonic can bring out the emeralds' true capabilities, such as Shadow's various Chaos attacks (that he can even do WITHOUT an emerald) or, of course, Chaos Control. This has been your fun maybe-fact of the day regarding the Blue Blur.
@mobiusscribe37328 жыл бұрын
Citation(s) needed, because I'm pretty sure all of that was made up. There's no indication that Ix's cybernetic half is stronger than his super form in the slightest. If he was stronger without the Master Emerald's power then he wouldn't have needed it in the first place. There's also no implications that using Chaos Control is really all that difficult, considering how Sonic succeeded in using Chaos Control on his first try and even mindless robots can receive enormous power boosts from just a single Chaos Emerald as a power source. What's more, Solaris, by virtue of being capable of destroying all of time simultaneously, is all but confirmed to be the most powerful Sonic villain to date. This is backed up by the fact it took three super hedgehogs to defeat him, whereas the Time Eater only took two and no villain besides the Metal Overlord has needed more than three.
@zwatssecondchannel88258 жыл бұрын
I didn't say it was fact. Though I probably should've specified that it was a theory. I got it from my friend Myuu, and he usually bases his theories off of information from the games, as wacky as that sounds. I can get him if you want. What I can say without getting anything wrong is that Ix's backstory does tie in with the Echidna war alluded to in Sonic Adventure, but you probably already know that. As for Solaris, non-canon. And he was beaten easily by blowing out a flame. Honestly what Eggman managed to do with the Time Eater is far more impressive AND far more dangerous. And Metal Overlord only took more because everyone just decided to fight him for the heck of it while he was still transforming. Tails and Knuckles's Super Shields don't even count as real super forms, their just extensions of Super Sonic's power. So it did take less power to beat Metal Overlord than people would think, he's actually pretty pathetic power-wise when compared to other villains in the series.
@mobiusscribe37328 жыл бұрын
By saying that you got your information from your friend, as opposed to any valid sources, you've all but admitted that yes, all of what you said was made up. Please don't spread misinformation without checking the official sources. As for Solaris being non-canon, a no. Thanks to Generations, a game which you know is canon thanks to your use of the Time Eater as a powerful villain, the events of Sonic 06 were in fact reinstated as canon. The battle against Solaris happened. On the other hand, the events of Sonic Chronicles are not canon, and never will be due to a certain infamous law suit. Also, Solaris being defeated by being 'blown out' doesn't change that at the height of his power, Solaris was literally ripping apart all of time at once, and it took three super hedgehogs to defeat him. Even then, he still wasn't dead, forcing Sonic to go back to a time when he was vulnerable in order to make it so that he never existed in-universe (a fact that doesn't change his canonical value outside of the games). What's more, when talking about how powerful a villain is, we usually take how strong they are at their best, not at their weakest. If Sonic traveled back in time and kicked baby Ix off a cliff before he assumed power, it still wouldn't change that Ix at the height of his power was able to fight Super Sonic. As for Metal Overlord, it still took three super powered beings to stop him. There is no indication that the 'Super Shields' are weaker than actual super forms, since Tails and Knuckles in the fight are implied to be on equal footing with Super Sonic. The only explanation as to why they got those shields rather than transforming proper when we already knew from SA2 that more than one person can go super at the same time is Takashi Lizuka's statements about how only male hedgehogs can now go super. We don't even know if it was Sonic giving Tails and Knuckles those shields, since we don't see him do anything to them. He transformed, then they did a moment later. Anything else is just head canon.
@zwatssecondchannel88258 жыл бұрын
Jeez, I didn't say any of it was fact to begin with. And what's the problem if it's made up? Solaris's events were removed from the timeline, you know. The reason Time Eater was able to bring it back was 1. it was screwy with Time (and I think that's evidence that the Time Eater's capabilities are far more impressive than what Solaris could do), and 2. anniversary shtick. And I think you're giving Solaris too much credit. It only took three hedgehogs to beat him because he was tridimensional, or in layman's terms, he existed in three dimensions at once, so defeating him in only one wouldn't make a difference. That says nothing about his actual power, just the conditions for his defeat. What the Time Eater did was overall far more impressive. And Metal Overlord? What did he do again? OH YEAH, he just transformed and that was it. More characters fighting does not automatically mean "this monster is powerful enough to require these many characters to beat him." More gameplay/characters does not automatically equal a stronger being, just a longer fight. Honestly, Metal Overlord is powerful for a Metal Sonic form, and that's about it. Also, that thing about "traveling back in time and kicking Ix off a cliff" is far too out of nowhere that I'm not even going to comment about that. Here's an idea: I won't spread misinformation and try to call it fact (which I wasn't even doing in the first place) if you check your own research. Cool? Cool. :)
@mobiusscribe37328 жыл бұрын
*Sigh* Here we go. "I didn't say any of it was fact to begin with. And what's the problem if it's made up?" Because there's literally nothing to substantiate your "theory", something you didn't even refer to as such until I pointed out that you and your friend were most likely making it all up. You spouted a bunch of nonsense and presented it in a factual manner. There are more than a few gullible people out there who would take your comment at face value and spread it _as fact_ due to the Chinese Whispers effect; eventually (and almost inevitably), there's going to be a bunch of people who take what you said as though it was 100% true. Trust me, it happens all the time, especially in the Sonic fan base. "Solaris's events were removed from the timeline, you know. The reason Time Eater was able to bring it back was 1. it was screwy with Time (and I think that's evidence that the Time Eater's capabilities are far more impressive than what Solaris could do), and 2. anniversary shtick." 06 was still reinstated into the canon thanks to Generations. Just because Solaris no longer exists in-universe does not mean that the fight against him didn't canonically happen; we know for a fact that it did. With regards to feats, Eggman stated that Solaris was destroying reality on an "unfathomable scale"; in other words, he was more powerful than anything they had ever encountered before. Eggman respected and/or feared Solaris's power, but he was easily able to take command of the Time Eater. The Time Eater was also taking it's sweet time to destroy the timeline by rendering everything into White Space, and the effects of it's efforts were easily resolved by Sonic running through the zones and collecting the Chaos Emeralds. Collecting the individual emeralds in End of the World didn't scare Solaris in the slightest, even though he knew full well how powerful they could be since his intelligent half, Mephiles, used them himself. "And I think you're giving Solaris too much credit. It only took three hedgehogs to beat him because he was *tridimensional,* or in layman's terms, he existed in three dimensions at once, so defeating him in only one wouldn't make a difference. That says nothing about his actual power, just the conditions for his defeat. What the Time Eater did was overall far more impressive." The terms Eggman used to describe Solaris were "super-dimensional" and _"transcendent" lifeform,_ not tri-dimensional. Tri-dimensional just means 3D. At this point you're blatantly getting basic information wrong. In any case, a transcendent being is one that exists above the mortal plane, AKA a deity. Eggman was using a fancy and long-winded term to refer to Solaris as a god, something to revere. He never did anything of the sort for the Time Eater. As for Solaris's power, again, Time Eater struggled to destroy one timeline over the course of an entire game. Solaris, in the last campaign alone, was destroying time itself. Not just one timeline, all of them. I'd say that's a lot more impressive than the Time Eater, which let itself get taken over by a fat guy and two assistant robots who at that time were stranded in space. Edit: Just to cover all bases, The Past, The Present and The Future are not dimensions, they're time periods. Even so, if Solaris had to split it's power in three to destroy all three time periods at once, then it's still an extremely impressive feat since he's effectively destroying three entire time _periods_ (not even timelines) while fighting off three super hedgehogs at the same time. Theory Bonus: It's heavily implied that the Time Eater is the ghost of Solaris (06's appearance in Generations, physical similarities between the two, both being able to control time, shared colour theming between T.E. and Mephiles etc.), so the events of 06 being reinstated could just be a late Solaris attempting to enact revenge, or even resurrect his former self. See, that's how you make a theory; you actually have to base your hypothesis on something that you can defend via evidence, not some rot that your friend made up with nothing to defend it. Speaking of, you still haven't provided any feats for Ix to prove how his cybernetic half is stronger than his super form by the way, especially since there was no need to use the Emeralds to fight his cyborg form. "And Metal Overlord? What did he do again? OH YEAH, he just transformed and that was it. More characters fighting does not automatically mean "this monster is powerful enough to require these many characters to beat him." More gameplay/characters does not automatically equal a stronger being, just a longer fight." It kind of does if they needed more characters to defeat him. It's a very direct correlation. More Fighters = More Powerful Side = More Powerful Opponent If More Were Needed To Fight Him. In any case, he still needed three super powered beings to fight on par with him. Time Eater only needed two, and that was after he received an upgrade from the Eggmen. "Honestly, Metal Overlord is powerful for a Metal Sonic form, and that's about it." Perhaps. I was never arguing to say he was. "Also, that thing about "traveling back in time and kicking Ix off a cliff" is far too out of nowhere that I'm not even going to comment about that." AKA you didn't understand the analogy, so you're not even going to try to refute it. Your original argument for Solaris being weak was that Sonic could blow him out when he was the Flames of Hope. Considering how Sonic had to travel back in time to do that, it's actually extremely relevant to the conversation that I point out how weak that argument is when turned back on Imperator Ix. "Here's an idea: I won't spread misinformation and try to call it fact (which I wasn't even doing in the first place) if you check your own research. Cool? Cool. :)" Or how about you stop spreading terrible theories and then acting like a petulant child when someone points out the obvious holes in them? Cool? Cool. :)

Might have been the very first Sonic game I owned for the DS. It was a pretty good game for me to play and even stayed up on school nights just to make it into the next chapter. When you mentioned all these points and problems, I can't help but agree with them. Even with memory alone I thought that the story had potential, but they never put much effort into forwarding it. Not to mention having one of the easiest boss games that I can recall from a Sonic game. Sadly, I've lost the game and can't find it anywhere. It'd be interesting to go back to the game after all these years just to see if my love for the game is still there or completely gone.

10:19 It's the one Chao that this certain Canadian nut was trying to find in the game after many resets before he gave up.

You have a lot of love for this series and it shows. As someone who's never been that into Sonic your reviews are one of my favorites. Gj, Johnny.

I wanted to say thank you, thanks to these reviews, I've dived in to the Sonic universe (I'm a bit older, so I grew up with Nintendo and barely played any Sonic till now...) I've been dabbling with a plethora of the different games, again, thanks to your reviews. Main reason I leave this on this video, I appreciate your message at the start about keep going... the games have been a fun way to relieve stress during a trying time in my life. I know, this is a long message, and not sure you'll read this. But again, thank you.

Tito Dick Why do you blindly hate this game? Seriously, there are some good things about Sonic Chronicles, and that is the story, Shade and the characterization.

When this game just released I was 10, and I can remember replaying it dozens of times, not really sure why but it was the best game I could think of back them, I loved it

As for the whole brouhaha over Penders thinking that the Dark Brotherhood looks similar to the Dark Legion, all I have to say is... I don't see the resemblance.
