Johnny vs. Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)

This is it, folks. The end of the Sonic Marathon has arrived, and yeowzas, it's the longest review of them all! Seriously, I don't think I'll ever make a review as long as this one ever again, but a lot needs to be said about this particular game.
I've visited this game many times before. I wasn't exactly satisfied with the first review I made years ago. Since then, I've done a commentary, and I even did a full Let's Play of the game. Thoughts and perspectives have changed. But what exactly? Is this truly the worst of the worst? Are there any bright spots in this infamous title? Join me as I end the Sonic Marathon with SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2006) for the Xbox 360.

I agree. Humans in a Sonic game should either be as cartoony as the regular cast or omitted from the setting outright. Hell, I'd even tolerate, to a degree, the kinda weird Elise to Sonic thing if it was done in a more non-realistic art style (Side note: I would think that Sonic is most likely to remain single or, if built up and written well enough, maybe end up falling for Amy, even with her stalker-ish tendencies and actions). It's a fair point to say that realism is probably not suited for something that is rooted in being unrealistic, ; IE, a super fast, blue hedgehog that defeats robots powered by little woodland creatures captured by an evil scientist that has a huge mustache and an egg-shaped body.

Across all the people I’ve argued with (…admittedly aggressively) at least one guy said it follows “Sonic CD/Back to the Future logic” and another said it follows “Time Travel B logic”. You know it’s bad when you can’t get a consistent explanation across those who defend this abomination of a story (worse than anything the Adventure Games or even what Pontac and Graff brought to the table.). It’s supposedly set up as Sonic CD logic, but if it was… then Sonic would be wiped from existence for Saving Elise as events going back to Sonic and Co. finding that bunker and the news and Elise would have changed drastically. You can’t just change the rules with Time Travel. You have to keep it consistent and clear for the audience no matter what.

Things I actually liked in Sonic 06: The prerendered cinematics are really nice to look at. I love the design of Egg Cerberus, it's a huge robotic dog, it looks awesome. Shadow roundhouse kicks Silver and I love it. It introduced Silver, who is one of my favorite Sonic characters. THE SOUNDTRACK IS BEAUTIFUL.

One tiny insignificant thing I will defend about this game is that Johnny kind of misunderstood the whole deal with Shadow sealing Mephiles. It's supposed to be a stable time loop. Shadow was the one who sealed Mephiles away because he went back in time to seal Mephiles away. And he went back in time to seal Mephiles away because he went back in time to seal Mephiles away. He never actually left Prison Island during his hibernation. So yeah, still dumb, but not quite as dumb as Johnny thought.

Time travel in this game is portrayed like a physical travel, meaning that Shadow would be sleeping in SA2, then in S06 he would physically travel back in time, retaining everything from S06, do stuff and go back to the future. There would temporarely be two instsances of Shadow during SA2 and none (very possibly) during a brief part in S06. It's not something like Zero Escape and Steins Gate, where the concept of time travel was focused on only the consciousness being sent through time.

I keep hearing people that Sonic 06 would’ve been better if didn’t have the bugs and glitches. Well, no shit. It would’ve at least been more functional, but it wouldn’t fix all the other issues the game has. The story, the hub worlds, the town missions, the playstyles, how the controls were handled, and many other design choices, like the Mach speed sections, the vehicles, and the ball puzzle. It is possible to get some enjoyment from the game in spite of all this, but 06 isn’t just bad from a technical standpoint, but it’s conceptually flawed to the core as well. In order to make it good, you would have to overhaul the entire game to the point where it may as well be a completely different game.

The hub world is empty, Sonic's top speed is slower than any random character doing a Sprint spell in whatever MMO, the music is BAD, and it's just... wow. 06 Was terrible, but it was fun-terrible. Boom is just terrible-terrible all arround. It has NOTHING good going for it. Watch Pro-Jared's review while we wait for Johnny, but I predict he'll say 06 is better. And again, nobody's saying 06 is good. It's just better. If anything, I heard the new cartoon is pretty funny/good ~

The "paradox" you mention is actually a plot device known as a closed loop. To put it simply there were two shadow's when he went back in time one on prison island sleeping and the one in soleana the shadow on prison island would become the shadow in soleana after he time travels and after mephiles is sealed and shadow heads to the future the loop ends

I've actually thought of something similar to that. Imagine you have a gold bar. You go to the future to get another one. Then, you go back in time with the gold bar from the future. There would be two bars, but after a while, the original will go away because the you from the past comes back to pick it up. You cannot create matter. That is the rule.

This video brings back so many memories. Not for the game itself, but for my discovery of Johnny and how his content really helped me in dark times. All those early winter mornings with depression at my worst in high school, I’d flip this video on and sip my coffee in a shitty canteen as I walked in the unrelenting winters towards my hell for 7 hours. It was comforting that even when I was failing, I felt alive and happy when listening to these videos. Now I’m in college, getting my first job, and learning about the world and I’m still here watching all the older videos after I see his most recent upload. Crazy.
