You could say that this Spider-Man game takes some cues from the Arkham series, but in a way you could also say that both it and the Arkham series take from the 2004 video game adaptation of the second Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie, which was the first in the series to be set in a wide open sandbox and features certain gameplay elements in common (like the web slinging and the combat), and thus the game that every subsequent Spider-Man game gets compared to.

Though mainly for the web-slinger alone, Insomniac Games' Spider-Man is the perfect video game of this comic book superhero. I bought it Day 1, sunk an INSANE amount of hours into it back in 2018, played through the main story and all the DLC episodes, got 100% on everything and even got that Platinum Trophy on the regular campaign. I look forward to whatever Insomniac Games has planned for the future of this new Spider-verse (how about some team-ups with Daredevil and the Human Torch?). Speaking of Spider-Verses, I too thought Into the Spider-Verse was a great film that was undoubtedly crafted with immense passion, and i'm happy for the creators getting attention for it, but man has that movie been placed on a mile-high, unbreakable platinum pedestal since it came out, and here I am feeling it's not quite the breathtaking god's gift to filmmaking that it's made out to be. I must be missing something, because I seem to live a lonely existence with that stance. BTW, Johnny, did you know that you made a cameo in the latest AVGN episode?

Screwball is new; as far as I am aware, she never existed prior to this game. Rhino's backstory is unique to this game as well; he never had a backstory pertaining to armor he can't remove. The part of Hammerhead going full cyborg is much the same. Shocker is different to Electro. The latter deals in electricity, but Shocker deals in shockwaves and concussive force. One is thunder, the other is lightning. Black Cat is very similar to Batman's Catwoman, but she does have a few things that are unique to her. Catwoman is a thief trying to fuel her lifestyle. She does this out of a sense of necessity, beign the orphan from the streets. Black Cat's trying to fuel her lifestyle, but she also enjoys engaging in the thrill it brings, and Spidey is a good part of that thrill for her. You could say it's part of her heritage, coming from a long line of thieves. Catwoman is a romantic, but Black Cat loves drama. Black Cat is also able to keep up with Spidey physically; apparently, she took part in the same Super Soldier project Captain America did, only she did it 60 year later (illicitly. The formula was stolen), so she has physical abilities similar to Captain America's.

As a HUGE Spider-Man fan... yeah Black Cat is mostly Spidey's version of Catwoman. There are small differences but not much. Hammerhead as a mech is also WTF for me too. As for the other villains, Shocker is slightly different as he uses sound based attacks while Electro is considerably more dangerous under normal circumstances as he is straight electricity.

As for Spidey games, if you are ever looking into a wall crawler marathon, the Sam Raimi movie tie ins are considered to be pretty good, the PS1 era games I hear are bomb, Ultimate Spider-Man and Web of Shadows are okay, Shattered Dimensions is really good and Edge of Time is... meh. I played the last few myself.

Spider-man 2 did the "counter-button" combat before Arkham Asylum did. Arkham was actually pretty blatant with the way they ripped off Spider-man. The enemies had a "Spider-Sense" symbol above their head whenever they attacked lol.

The Amazing Spider-Man movie games did the Arkham gameplay formula before this but the Spider-Man 2 game from 2004 had a dodge button. All of them (Spider-Man 2, the Amazing games, and the Arkham games) had the dodge button be Y or the triangle button so having it as circle in this game really threw me off, especially since that’s usually the button for web attacks. I got used to the new controls but I wish they kept it the same as the other games.

Just wished the swinging wasn't as automated as it is. Anyone who has the game, try this. Hold R2 and forward to go to a destination. Slightly adjust the camera from time to time. You can literally do this and still be there, since holding R2 lets go, dive bombs, running and wall runs. There's also a bit too much air control. If you go towards the building you attached to, it would feel a bit better. A climb button would make people pay some attention when swinging. Holding Circle near could initiate a climb. I just hate after Spider Man Web of Shadows, the Spidey games just took away the climb button. Whether you will climb or not is up to the game. I've lost count how many times in Spidey PS4 I swing to wall, he clings on, then he just suddenly wants to jump off.

I can help out a little. Electro's powers are elecrtic, obviously. Shocker has vibro-gauntlets that create sonic vibrations. Why he's called Shocker, I have no idea. Black Cat isn't really Catwoman. She's more like a thief version of Talia al-Ghul, especially with how she keeps trying to hook up with Spidey, like Talia does with Batman. Difference is, Black Cat has it for Spidey, not the person wearing the mask. She gives zero shits about Peter Parker.

I LOVE this game! Everything about it Amazing! Spectacular! The Ultimate Spider-man game! The only problem I have with it is that the boss battles are way easy. I remember my first exposure to Spider-Man (and Marvel in general) was from the old PSX Spider-Man. To see how far gaming has come in just 15 to 16 years or so is amazing. Makes me think "where will gaming be in another 15 years".

Alright let's do it for the 3D games. Spider-Man 1 & Spider-Man 2 on PSX are great but the games don't use analogue so it's dated as hell control wise. Spider-Man 1 on PS2 is good, Spider-Man 2 on PS2 is legendary and still fun to play but it's story is weak, Spider-Man 3 is drab as fuck and repetitive as hell. Ultimate Spider-Man looks great but is surprisingly hard. Web of Shadows had an amazing web swinging system but the combat was repetitive as hell and the acting was badddd. Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions is a blast to play, it's fun and it runs so smoothly and the game looks amazing sporting it's 4 different art styles. Edge of Time is a slog beyond belief. ... It has the shame showrunner as Young Justice and it showed, as well as one of the catchiest goddamn theme songs you’ll ever hear in your life. Also, while I think the story in both games is pretty laughable I find the second game to be especially unpolished so it's not a great time even without this new game to compare it to. Heck, I would've rather been replaying the first game over the sequel.

Edit: you asked who the Amazing Bag-Man is so here goes (apologies in advance for the massive wall of text): the “Bombastic Bag-Man” suit was a costume that debuted during the Secret Wars event in the 80’s. Basically, the Fantastic 4 lent it to Peter when he was left without a suit after Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) separated him from the symbiote back when he first bonded with it (this was before Venom was a thing). Since the F4 don’t wear masks, Peter had to improvise with a paper bag he found. A funny detail that was unfortunately omitted in this game’s version is the “kick me” sign that Johnny Storm (Human Torch) put on the back. The suit quickly became a favorite/running gag and has remained a staple of Spider-Man videogames since the Neversoft PS1 game

If only Peter Parker hadn't been snapped outta existence he could have taken out Thanos with his mouth alone lol. I think that's why I love Spider-Man so much; sure he has cool powers, super strength, endurance you wouldn't believe, his willpower is just amazing. But in the end, behind the mask, Peter Parker is just a guy. He interacts with the locals of New York, he looks out for the little guy, he makes quick quips in battle, and he'll always be there for you. While the Avengers are the big godlike heroes out to save the Universe and the Planet....Spider-Man will always be on the lookout for New York. ^_^

That games pretty good, I'd imagine he'd find it about the same as Spider-Man 2 though. It's pretty dated and certain things hold it back as a great experience, but still really good and if not for Miles Morales I'd say it was easily the 3rd or 2nd best Spider-Man game.
