In fact as a kid I didn't know at first that X was a "sequel series" to a franchise that started on the NES (the SNES was my first system growing up, and while I played my cousin's NES a lot back then he oddly never had any of the Mega Man games), so when I saw Mega Man 7 at my local rental store for the first time my reaction was "wow I didn't know Mega Man X had seven games!" and when I played it I was like "Wait why does Mega Man look like that? And where's Zero?" It was after I started going through that same cousin's collection of Nintendo Power magazines that I realized Mega Man has a whole had been around longer than I knew, and X was technically a different series.

Oh, one more thing about X3 that may be interesting to add in the review. There is a ROM hack X3 made by this guy named Justin3009 called the Zero Project that lets you play as Zero for the entire game. Not just letting Zero overcome his phobia of doors, but make him a fully playable character with his own upgrades, his own dialogue, everything. It's essentially to X3 what Sonic 3 Complete was to Sonic. It apparently also changes other things, like making X's buster upgrade actually useful! Might be worth spreading the word; I think this could help make an otherwise mediocre entry in the series something worthwhile.

That was because they didn't want to implement too much new mechanics right off the bat and made X more similar to classic Mega Man so instead of having it naturally like a wall climb, they made it a mandatory power-up, so that people will get used to controls by the time they get it.

I can answer that for you. I couldn't beat Armored Armadillo or Sting Chameleon, and I couldn't even get to Launch Octopus or Spark Mandrill. Then I tried Storm Eagle and I managed to beat him.

Mega Man X is one of my favorite video game series of all time. Much like you, Mega Man X was my very first Mega Man game period, so I've felt very spoiled when playing classic Mega Man after X since X had the superior mobility and combat capabilities. Zero Knight Mega Man X, when I was a kid really defined what a video game was. Up to that point I think Mario and Aladdin, and Yoshi Island were the only games we had for the SNES. I remember when I got this for my birthday, it was a challenge, but a FUN one! It seemed like Mega Man had everything you could ask for as a kid. What a special entry into the MM series. 🤖

I remember going through Armored Armadillo, Launch Octopus & Flame Mammoth first before going through Chill Penguin and I manage to beat them all without the dash and I got all the upgrades and capsules; with the exception of Flame Mammoth's stage where after beating Chill Penguin, I cool down the lava and it was the only time I've backtrack to get all the items & capsules in that one stage ( not counting the Hadoken one in Armored Armadillo stage ). It was difficult without the dash. But not entirely impossible if u know what to do and one of the most satisfying moments I've ever done.

Here's a little info about Mega Man X3 for your eventually review that I think will shed light on why it's not your favorite X game. X3 wasn't actually developed by Capcom, believe it or not. At the time, they were busy porting their development systems from 16-bit to 32-bit, and so they didn't have much time to develop a third Mega Man X for the SNES. Although that didn't stop them from making Mega Man & Bass for the SNES, but I digress. Instead, X3 was outsourced to Minakuchi Engineering. If the name sounds familiar to you, they're the folks who developed the Game Boy Mega Man titles. The only things Capcom handled themselves were the character designs and, get this, the story. Everything else, from the music, to the level design, to the boss AIs, to the weapons and upgrades, to Zero being a worthless addition, were all Minakuchi, and it shows. Fittingly, X3 would be the very last Mega Man game they would ever develop. Here's a little bit of trivia about X1. Did you know the Dash upgrade was actually supposed to be an ability you had from the start? However, to keep things simple and familiar, they decided to make it an upgrade, and the first one you're supposed to acquire, to better ease players in the mechanic. That's why from X2 onward, X has the dash from the beginning. And now for a story about myself and X1. I was first introduced to X1, among many other games, through the emulation scene. One day, a friend of mine from over 10 years ago tried burning an emulator and a couple of games on a CD-Rom. But the end result was so buggy that it didn't save progress, so I had to finish games like Super Mario RPG and Yoshi's Island in one sitting. Which I did. One of those games was X1, and it was the buggiest one by far. Armor upgrades wouldn't save, which made sections like Sigma's fortress... interesting to say the least. I also would be booted back to the intro stage after beating a boss more often than not, keeping all the weapons I acquired so far with me. Needless to say, it made for a pretty unique experience. Looking back, it was rather entertaining at the time to blow through the intro stage with weapons you weren't supposed to have yet, but I'd honestly take a stable version of the game over it any day.

+Shade Knight Wow, I knew Capcom had some outsourcing for X3, but I didn't know they virtually had no control over the gameplay! A lot of things in X3 felt off to me when comparing it to its prequels, and now it actually makes sense. The level design isn't the greatest, most bosses are laughably limited in animation and movesets, and the music is just overall average for both versions (along with an argument that comes up WAY to often). Although with the "Which Soundtrack is better" argument, I myself have quite the bombshell of an opinion to throw into ring.

Oh thank goodness, Johnny! I am not the only one who noticed original MegaMan to grow more and more on himself during the series also having some sort of free will, just like a 10 years old boy. As for Auto though, he is still alive and lives in an underwater apartment of sorts that can be seen in the PS1/Saturn/PC Version of X3. MegaMan X itself is possibly one of the best games in the entire series, I still play it every once in a while because it is just so good!

Don't forget that Maverick Hunter X also re-arranges where the Armor Capsules are (no more free Dash Legs), re-arranges the Sigma Fortress stages to the point that Vile is fought in the third stage instead of the first like the original (though the new Vile Ride Armor fights suck with how you have to beat him and then he grabs you anyway), and actually made Zero's Buster Parts when he dies unique from the normal Capsule Buster Parts so that it encourages you to go through almost the whole goddamn fortress without charging special weapons or a third buster charge (and coincidentally makes it impossible to get the Hadouken until just before the final boss if you do so).

Josh Teixeira it took me almost 15 years to beat Megaman X this first time. I mean there were several year gaps, but you get it. I could not beat it. Getting back into it, after dying so many times, and understanding the patterns, I think an hour and a half is a reasonable time.

I wouldn’t say that’s too much of a stretch. Each stage is at most 5 minutes long (without dying mind you) and the Sigma stages take about a half an hour (45 minutes at most) it really depends on how easy you find it.

Collin Drey The rest of the game is fine, but some of the later stages can be tough. Sigma on the other hand, is just brutal. Bottom line is if it's somebody's first time through the game, it will take way longer than an hour and a half.

12:00 actually you have to lose to vile AGAIN and can only beat him after Zero saves your ass AGAIN to destroy the ride armor. That's my biggest problem with the game as Rohan Mythril put it "You didn't win because X got stronger, you won because Vile got weaker"

Kyle Campbell That's a main complaint I had about Vile in X1. You fight him in the intro with it being a forced loss (with Maverick Hunter X turning it into a proper boss), setting up that X eventually becomes strong enough to kick Vile's ass, even with the Ride Armor. But nope. Even with EVERY UPGRADE IN THE GAME, his ride armor still kicks your ass and Zero has to bail him out again, sacrificing himself just so that Vile can't use that cheap ass armor anymore (Which leaves less of an impact of you replay X1 after playing any of the later X games, like Leomon's death in Digimon).
