We really don’t need a new Smash game after this. At this point I’d be content with them porting this game to future consoles and adding new content. Any other non-ported attempt will most likely cause us to lose so many characters.

The only thing they could do to make it more interesting is if it was a spinoff or reboot that focuses on the platforming and adventure elements of past entries, and brings back character interactions that change depending on the hero of your choosing. The roster would be limited, like you said we will lose so many fan favorites, but the experience could be more compact and refreshing.

I think my favorite Classic Mode route is Mega Man. His big boss - Galleom from Brawl - is the penultimate fight instead of the ending. The final fight is... Dr. Mario, in homage to Dr. Wily. But it doesn't end there! After KOing him a Mewtwo pops up, in reference to Mega Man 2's final boss fight against Wily's alien hologram. Funny stuff.

You know I wouldn’t mind Spirits being the sole replacement of Trophies if they at least had detailed descriptions of the spirit just like the trophies did so you can at least learn a little history of the character and where it came from(I know you can google it but hey I like the novelty of learning it within the game)

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason they replaced trophies with spirits is BECAUSE of those descriptions. Keep in mind that every description would have to have a translated version for at least 8 different languages. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't bummed about that exclusion myself, but I can certainly see WHY they were removed.

Where I live, I don't have Internet. I'm just saying, if I could play as the entire cast of DLC characters, THEN, I would play as the plant. But if I had to play as the Piranha Plant to unlock the others like Sephiroth or Sora, or Joker, I definitely would. Because I love the KH series, and Persona, especially Persona 5. Seriously, I just got the newest PS5 sequel. I would definitely go out and get the DLC if I could, are you kidding? Sora? Joker? Sephiroth? Banjo & Kazooie, Terry Bogard, Hero from Dragon Quest, (yet ANOTHER series the late, great Akira Toriyama worked on, along with Chrono Trigger), Kazuya Mishima from Tekken?, the blocky guy from Minecraft? Those sound like amazing characters to put into Smash Bros. especially because I love Tekken, Dragon Quest, and Banjo & Kazooie, and Banjo Tooie. I never played Fatal Fury or KOF though. I have heard of the series though, and it looks interesting, like a rival series to SF, or Tekken. Which i think it is, right? I would've loved to see Kazuya or Ryu, taking on Terry...would've been cool.

While I understand you saying that World of Light doesn't really have a story, its conclusion is so epic that I hope everyone can play through it. I had to turn the difficulty down to easy to enjoy it the way I wanted to, which is a bit of a bummer, but that doesn't change the fact that I was HOOKED. I loved the puzzle solving, the various references the world map made, and the hefty amount of creativity that went into the various battles. It's incredible, but I can understand why people would say it's tedious. I really wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, and I'm so happy I did. It was a blast.

He said he didn't beat it before this review, kind of a shame, but at least he didn't rush this review, WoL is better if you take your time. Also It's great that anyone of a diffent skill level can enjoy it, you can put it on easy and grind your spirits if you get stuck, I prefer super high challenge and selected hard, and I appreciate how they didn't hold back with hard mode, the CPUs are even better than previous games most of the time.

Once I got the Metal Face spirit (promote Mumkar), and stuck that on Donkey Kong, then giant metal DK destroyed most opponents within 10 seconds. Three up tilts is usually all you need, even if you have a type disadvantage. It took me just over 10 hours to 100% on normal difficulty. The ending's made even more epic if you watch the game theory by the way.

People think it's way too tedious is because of the overly abundant Spirit battles and little to no variety in the 1st half of the mode, not only that, it just goes on for way too long. I'm in the 2nd half of the mode now and I can say that it's certainly a lot better than the 1st half but you're essentially doing the same thing but to a lesser extent.

Spoilers for all of World of Light: I couldn't agree more! I just wish I didn't get unlucky with spoilers (had both Marx and playable Master Hand spoiled for me) but I had a fantastic time with world of light nevertheless. It also helps that I was expecting star allies Marx and not the awesome OG design from super star, and I actually didn't believe the person who told me about playable master hand. Multiple endings and the game theory video also took me by surprise and made me like it even more, along with all the references to the games these fighters come from.

You are ABSOLUTELY underselling world of light. The fact that each fight is thematically placed and each makes a specific reference to a game series made it really fun to go through. While it does get repetetive eventually, the novelty of each battle and its clever references never got old. Also, dungeon areas and the areas you need specific spirits to access were neat. I don't think it's amazing by any means, but I do think you glossed over a lot of good things about it.

I will put it simply here, it has to do with the lack of moisture even if you have water for her. I don't see the point in doing a sequel when you could just add to this game with updates and DLC (hoping for more fighters passes in the future) but yeah although it gets a little frustrating sometimes and I am disappointed about the lack of trophies or how all star has been changed I am still loving this game it's a complete blast anyway merry xmas to ya Johnny as well as the rest of SGB and BSC for a great year look forward to more in the future

I gotta agree with Thundaga... Unless the series has a developer with a face (like Kojima, Miyamoto, Sakurai etc.) people usually credit the developer. Sakurai no doubt gets the focus the most compared to other instances you can point out. Also, some people do legitimately think Sakurai does everything to the balance, music, DLC, when it's impossible for that to be all him.

I'm going to disagree with World of Light being less interesting than multiplayer. WoL tries to mix things up a bit by throwing in different conditions, and giving you the option of going in with a disadvantage for extra challenge. Multiplayer on the other hand is the exact same things over and over, with condition changes being less meaningful than they are in WoL. Switching from time to stock isn't as big a change as your HP constantly being drained, the enemy spontaneously getting assist trophies or the game making you really easy to launch. Just goes to show how far they went out of their way to make the game interesting to more than one type of player and for that, I think everyone on the dev team deserves cake and a long vacation.

You say multiplayer is the same over and over, but what makes WOL any different? At least in multiplayer you can play against different people and no one ever fights exactly the same. Yes, you can change your strats, but at the end of the day, you're doing nothing but fighting an AI enemy with a random gimmick. At least Brawl and Melee's adventure mode had some platforming and Melee even had their adventure mode themed based on the stage you're playing. WOL doesn't quite have that and it's sad. But at the end of the day, no one will care because they'll just say "lol single player in a fighting game"

You can actually use spirits in multiplayer battles tho. This plus items, different characters, custom smash settings, etc, you can make your own way better spirit battles with friends. WoL is just dull in comparision.

I feel World of Light does get repetitive after a while. For instance every single Street Fighter character, and a number of others, have the exact same "fighting game" setup. The more creative fights are fun, and the more homage-based areas are great, but a lot of them are just too predictable. The map looks really nice though, I really like it. Also, it's long. Like holy shieeeeeet is it long. You get your money's worth, that's for sure, but anything gets tedious after that long.

@@Dragonsamuari They weren't "random gimmicks" though...they all represent Nintendo (and the third parties)' characters and situations from their games. So many times I was smiling and just thought something was really clever. I'm really surprised that a lot of people aren't picking up on that. I thought it was mostly people who weren't as familiar with Nintendo who weren't as crazy about the mode, but I don't think that's all it is. It really mystifies me because in Subspace I was really confused how many people, even intelligent reviewers, called the worlds "generic" when most were clearly based on the franchises, and now I feel like we're going through a similar song and dance.

Great video, Johnny! I personally loved World of Light. I took it nice and slow over the course of the last two weeks and just finished it the other day. The last couple of hours were especially great. Ended up going for 100%. I didn't really care for the levels in Subspace Emissary, I just kept playing it for the cutscenes. If we could have gotten a plethora of cutscenes like in Subspace with this sort of gameplay, it would've been a lot better.

The biggest problem I have with this game honestly is the lack of single player modes. I can understand why break the targets, and stage builder were cut, but why home run contest? It’s a single area with a simple objective, there is no reason to cut something like that. I’m sorry but doing a single thing with little spins to it becomes monotonous after a while, and with trophies or spirits not providing a description of each character. There isn’t really a way to just sit down and enjoy something different. I can learn about each character, I can see how far I can beat the sandbag, or how fast I can break the targets. I can only fight other characters, and fight multiple other characters, I hope that at least Home run contest gets added later on, or else Smash Ultimate is just gonna be that game that I play for a little bit then turn off to play something else.

Dragon thunderX Home run contest was a mode you play for like 5 minutes and never touch again. I feel that other than all star mode, the modes they removed were pretty minor and didn’t have longetivity value.

11clock dude I’m asking for at least something to keep the game from getting stale. I can only enjoy doing one thing for so long until it becomes a chore, so the fact that I have to smash opponents or smash opponents in order to get coins, when other smash games fixed this with mini games. Makes me want to put the game down and play something else.

True, the mini games did provide variety. But given the new structure of classic mode and the variety of conditions in adventure mode I find jumping between classic and adventure to be enough for me. And when I get bored of those I create my own custom campaigns in Smash mode.

World of Light actually does have its highlights, especially towards the end. But yeah, it is WAY longer than it needs to be. I guess it goes along with Ultimate's "everything and the kitchen sink" approach.

unlocking characters with classic mode is the best way of doing it to me, its great seeing how the route for every character is like then you unlock one character each time you finish it, takes way longer but it has been really fun to do

I actually prefer World of Light over Subspace Emissary. Way too much of SSE was spent on turning Smash into platforming adventure game and it was filled with forgettable enemies and generic worlds. Brawl’s awkward physics didn’t help either. If it weren’t for the cutscenes, I don’t think people would care for SSE. I like WoL because it focuses on Smash’s primary gameplay and strong points, which is simply KO’ing your opponent by knocking them off the stage and the various conditions and items you can add into the fight. Some of the spirit battles are cleverly implemented too. That being said, it still would have been nice to have something break up the literal hundreds of battles to do, like bonus stages or short, breif platforming sections like in Melee’s Adventure mode, but it’s not a deal breaker for me.

Side modes are meant to be different from the main gameplay, they're supposed to give you a fresh experience when you want to take a breath after hours of the same thing. If you base a THIRTY plus hour mode off the same thing you're already doing in the main multiplayer, it's bound to be repetitive and tiring. Definitely a waste of time tbh. I would never have completed it if not because I wanted to hear something fresh in the main menu. Melee's adventure mode and Smash Run were still better than both SSE and WoL, tho.

Johnny also didn't mention how each Spirit matchup represents the spirit character in question, and they provide great fan service and nice little references. Plus, who doesn't want to see how the WoL scenario unfolds? I was not expecting (SPOILERS) Darkhon and legitimately playable Master Hand. The final battle was nothing short of epic.

​@@Chaos_Seven The entire Street Fighter reference room was amazing in World of Light. It had so much fun fanservice and nods to Nintendo (and the third party's,) history. It succeeds where Subspace Emissary failed, being full of fun references and nods instead of 99% generic, dull areas full of generic dull enemies. Event Mode was always the best single player content in Smash, and this is Event Mode on crack. Well, that and the Master Hand moment at the end of it was better than Subspace on its own.

@@mikeyua7 Subspace? An engaging platformer? You're kidding right? It's the equivalent of baby's first platformer except with even less chance of death. It feels styled like a Kirby game, except watered down with poorly implemented beat-em-up elements in it. The enemies themselves had almost entirely forgettable and bland designs. Maybe if they had taken the time to make the Subspace army any kind of interesting instead of "generic mc baddybads want to destroy shit," they could have been interesting beyond their bad designs, but otherwise? The mode is padded out with a lot of repetition since the level design is too poor to make places feel distinct with only one or two exceptions. If they wanted to make a platformer it shouldn't have been sluggish, it shouldn't have been all generic areas and it shouldn't have had almost all enemies be generic subspace goons and threatless. Like with the exception of... Shaydas, maybe Floow, the Subspace enemies halt your progress to make you fight waves of them regularly, and they're so fucking passive and threatless that it comes off like a bunch of punching bags almost entirely. World of Light doesn't kill its momentum with broken battles. People give shit like Dr. Wily and Pauline flack, but those spirits are ultimately OPTIONAL to fight, that's the point; they're hard as balls, but are optional to complete (and are meant for you to return to with stronger Spirits.) Meanwhile Subspace has the Great Maze that literally adds nothing and only serves to pad out the experience. Your excuses for the Great Maze's bad design doesn't suddenly make it not shit game design. In fact; "using any character in other stages," is what you can do upon completing the mode... You just have no real reason to because Subspace level design is lackluster and offers no real replay value beyond getting the three postgame characters.

To me, that's enough to distinguish it from ordinary Vs. matches in Smash. But to each his own. I can see why some might find it boring because like I said, there's nothing to break up the huge number of battles to do, but I personally find Spirits Mode pretty addicting and it's all I've been playing in Smash Ultimate ever since I got the game on release day.

I never played the smash before, but my sister did with our cousin son, on their wii. So we got this smash just because my sister was like "it's a great game, we need to get it" and when we got it we were just playing smash against each other, when suddenly a "new challenger appears" and it was inkling. We are huge Splatoon fans, so it was like "ooooooooooooo WOOMY WOOMY! OMG! THEY GOT WOOMY! We just neeeeeeed to beat her" it was so exciting to unlock the character you want. 10/10 feeling getting the tekken 3 flashbacks of nostalgia. When we were unlocking every possible charachter + costume.
