ReverendRicktaScale I was at this show.... It was the 5th time I had seen him and was just blown away on how different his playing was when he had a “foil”like Derringer. He pushed Johnny on stage like nobody had before. I wish they had done more that was captured on film

In 1970 I was 2nd lead guitar in LIGHTNING with Zippy Caplan, I had ( 2 ) Sunburst 1959 Les Pauls....S# 9 0417 & 9 0282....Rick Derringer is playing one rite cheer + he kept the axe.......later he bought me a 1958 tri hummer Black Beauty from guitar guru Dan Martin....S# 8 1853........I used it on the 1970 LIGHTNING LP here on U Tube....

This is one of the few JOHNNY WINTER AND concert videos with Rick Derringer's little brother, Randy Zehringer, playing the drums. Randy's music career was cut short due to encephalitis and seizure issues from loud music. That's a shame, Randy had a lot of talent, it would have been interesting to see where his career would have gone.

Just think this kid is about 23,, and hes already had a #1 hit single and toured with the Rolling Stones,, came from the house band at the Scene in New York, where he more than likely jammed with all kinds of musicians. playing with Johnny Winter here ,, where he wrote the hit song Rock and Roll Hoocie coo. , a real seasoned veteran at 23 and a totall pro musician with a career than spaned over 50 years. I saw Johnny Winter And at Fillmore West. And from that moment on realized how great a guitar player he is.

Me oh my. That is really rockin'!! I was lucky enough to see JWA in Portchester NY in the Spring of 1971. Mylon, the seminal gospel rock group, opened. Rick and Johnny both came out and jammed with Mylon on separate songs. What a show.

Yes, in fact everyone from The McCoys except for the keyboard player, who left The McCoys in 1970, joined Johnny as his backing band. Also, at first it was supposed to be called "Johnny Winter and The McCoys" but management said that the McCoys reputation as a bubblegum pop act would affect his popularity so it was named Johnny Winter And instead.

saw winter and at the fillmore east in '71 w/ elvin bishop and the allman bros. as warmup. he blew the place up. saw him about one month later at the fox theater in hackensack, n.j. that night johnny seemed really high and derringer carried the show, very disappointing . but the warm up "cactus" rocked like crazy.

In fact if you look at the videos listed on the right side it should be the 4th one down. By the way I saw you guys tear it up at the Fillmore East with the Allmans on March 12th 1971 and again the very next week at a little Long Island dive called the Rock Pile. it's amazing to me that no one ever filmed this band. it was, inarguably, one of the finest rock and roll groups of the 20th century, and this is the only footage?? by the same token, it's also very difficult to find footage of duane allman. compare with today, when every celebrity footfall is recorded. now that i think about it, i'm not sure which is better.

If you read the authorized bio about JW (“raisin’ cain”) Derringer sounds like he still holfs a grudge against JW because he removed himself from the music scene & checked into rehab/medical center for a year and a half. Derringer actually said that JW’s heroin addiction “was not that bad….” When Jw checked into rehab it ended that band. Derringer also said a few other snarky things about JW. When asked about his relationship with Derringer all he said was that they do not keep in touch. Anyone who is using heroin needs to do whatever they can to get off of it,recover & move ahead in their lige - even if it means not playing in a great band. To me Rick Derring spunds like a real a$$###e although he claims to be a high roller christian these days. Ig.

Johnny had "had enough" of heroin and checked into a rehab clinic for 6 months or more. Derringer went on to produce Winter's biggest selling record, Still Alive and Well, as well as writing the title track, and playing guitar on it. Rick also wrote Rock n' Roll Hootchie Coo for Johnny which became a huge hit. Rick and Johnny remained friends until Johnny's passing. So, I think your comment is pure B.S.! I might add, Floyd Radford could not hold a candle to Rick Derringer.

Derringer singing makes me nauseous, he sounds horrible. So he wrote the song rock and roll hoochie koo (you spelled the song wrong) big deal. Johnny Winter made rock and roll hoochie koo Famous. Bob Dylan wrote 500 platinum songs. Hwy 61 one of them. I don't like anything about Derringers music, it's nothing at all like Johnny Winters music truth be told. If Derringer was so good, why did Johnny Winter end the relationship as a band (being friends is another topic) ? Enough Said.
