Johnny was the best. Tobacco Road is a classic. He was soul personified. I saw him in Charlotte around 95 when he was playing the headless Steinberger. Years later I was flying out of RDU and Johnny and his band were traveling from VA to SC to do a show. I had to go meet him and tell him how much I enjoyed his music. He was in a wheelchair and in decline but very friendly and gracious. I think he passed about a year or so afterwards.

Remember buying his first vinyl “The Progressive Blues Experiment “on the Imperial label. The early copies had a small poster in the sleeve,my friends ,many like me, musicians, thought this cat was from outer space. My only 2 comments were ,wait and listen and this gonna be big.Not many months after I read in the music trades that CBS ( Columbia) offeredJohnny $300,000 cash just to sign on.Reason I’m commenting is because you have a picture of him playing a Gib.Byrdland 350 T. Same as the small shot of mine in my ID shot. Very rare for him.Seen him too many times to mention.A true blues pioneer been a student since the beginning. Great job posting. Peace, Rocky
