I knew Johnny and Edgar when I was a teenage girl. I was fascinated by them, I thought they were frost giants. It made John laugh..He was such a sweet guy. I miss him, but Edgar is still with us. I loved them both, they were just so special...

I met Johnny in the eighties, I was about 11-12 years old. My dad used to go down to a bar/grill on the lake. Townes van zany, Blaze floret, Calvin Russell, they would all sit around and jam. Nobody was there. I guess it was their hideaway. That’s when I first heard the blues, and have been in love with it ever since. Being young, I had no idea that I was sitting in on legends. But Johnny winter was different, he was nothing but rock n roll. After the gig was up I would water ski home

This was recorded on Nov 23, 1983 at CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ontario Canada for an episode of the legendary "In Session" series. I was fortunate to be the recording engineer for the series. Johnny and Dr. John were great to work with that day. Johnny actually went out for lunch with the crew. Told some great road stories about playing the bars in Texas as a teenager.

First and foremost, I’d like to thank you Rev. Bob for what you do for not only music but the musicians as well! I found your posts when looking for music to practice and am a intermediate Blues player. I have lived in both Texas and Louisiana and soaked up as much as I could. You can’t go to either state without immersing yourself in both of these performers and their music. They were The Elite. I will always regret not seeing either of them live but, with people like Rev Bob, they can be enjoyed forever! Thanks again!

In my humble opinion Mr. Winter was an interpreter of the blues like no other “white” guitarist. The man respected the music and always gave credit to the original artists if he was playing a cover. The emotion he got out of his instrument was unreal. Plus his Texas drawl singing was great.

Hey Paul, I did the same as you by taking the train from Flushing every weekend to get to The Fillmore East & see what new group was playing. I started going there in 1967 thru 1970. The first concert I ever went to was The Beatles at Shea Stadium c.1965 and the it was the Fillmore. I saw Johnny in 1967 at Hofstra University Sheba he brought his brother, Edgar up to join him. One of my favorite collaborations was Johnny & Rick Derringer...Wow. Two dueling blues rock guitarists going at it which was truly amazing. At 70, I look at the shit that is being played today and thank God I got to see just about every band, group & musician from the mid 60’s on. I wen to Woodstock also and that was another great experience in my life along with seeing Jimi play more than 2 dozen times up until 2 weeks before he died. (Randall’s Island, 8/70). @@guitmeister1 Yet how many dumb ''top greatest blah blah'' lists does he make? How many people other than really dedicated blues fans, 60s/70s rock fans even know who he is, much less know his power, specially improvisational... Holy Smokes! Thanks for uploading this Gem! Saw the good Doctor open for Tom Petty at Jazzfest the year they both passed. We thought the show was going to be cancelled due to an extremely bad thunderstorm that rolled through N.O. on that morning. We took refuge in a café and thought we were going to drown and blow away. The storm passed, clouds cleared, and gates opened in the sunshine. Made it into the fairgrounds in time to catch the Doctor pouring his soul into the piano for a set and then make a humble exit only to have Tom come pour his soul into the guitar and mic. Good times. We miss those times and great artists and common agreement that we are all there for a good time and enjoy great music. Saw the Doctor on many occasions but none as special as that day. He knew his time was short. They both knew and we were only left with the amazing memories of that special place and time.

In 1968 I went out to buy my first LP (as a Xmas gift from my parents) ever, and it was one of Johnny Winter. Then I saw him first live in 84 during a European tour with exactly this line up here, it was incredible to see Dr. John so happy and relaxed at that time ...

Pure gold here! Dr. John was an accomplished guitarist until he had his fret hand ring finger shot off during a honky tonk gig. He switched to the piano and became a first call session player in LA, part of the famous "wrecking crew". These guys probably didn't even rehearse for this gig, just called out a song and key and pure talent did the rest. The Dr.'s reference to James Booker is a great tribute to another NO legend, James Booker had a regular week night gig at the famous Maple Leaf uptown New Orleans right up until his death, he also traded piano lessons to a young Harry Connick Jr. for legal work from his father since he was always in trouble with the law. Love this, thanks for posting!

What can one say? Two geniuses from the same area of the country who knew each other for many years just jamming and having a ball. No doubt they're playing in the heavenly choir right now. How I miss them. I had the pleasure of seeing them live many times in a variety of cities and decades.

At that level they all have their own style and you can't really rank them. Clapton, Bloomfield ... they were all good.
