Randy. Marsh. Has a character in TV history ever undergone a transformation like Randy? Over the course of 23 seasons of South Park, Randy has gone from a simple father and geologist, to an obsessive weed farmer who literally caused the ongoing pandemic. A truly WILD evolution. But honestly, if you follow Randy’s journey over these 23 seasons, the funny thing is that this development… actually feels really natural, and earned! He didn’t just BECOME an obsessive oaf one day, they slowly introduced certain quirks to Randy’s personality and those quirks evolved and developed over time. Randy went from being a moderately utilized secondary character to, arguably the star of the entire show. And while there are some people who take exception to Randy’s presence at the forefront of South Park these days, I think the journey itself is a fascinating one. So let’s comb over 23 seasons worth of the man with absolutely no Tegridy and explore the evolution of Randy Marsh.

From a Jungian lens, I always took it as Stan and Kyle are Trey and Matt as kids respectively, and Cartman is Trey's "shadow" self while Kenny is Matt's "shadow"self. I agree they seem to use Randy as their protagonist now moreso, because it feels the mst "direct" for Trey at least, Randy's voice is literally his voice unaltered.

"The core appeal of South Park was the writing and the comedy" They're simply tools in creating content that's offensive and gets a reaction out of particular targets. @@timmyt603 Smoking weed is fundamentally a form of escapism, and there's nothing inherently wrong with a little escapism, like with playing video games or reading fiction. It only matters the degree to which you do it. Plenty of conscientious, productive people simply smoke a bowl at the end of a long day and go back to work the following morning. Others are glued to the couch and can't muster the motivation to take out the tach or do the dishes. The first kind is a recreational user, and the other is a burnout.

Randy moving out to the weed farm is also great meta-commentary on the idea of modern life in the city sucking and wanting to move back out into the country. Randy is exactly the type of person who'd feel that way as he's been chasing the grind for his whole life and even when finding success, it never made him truly happy. So to find fulfillment, like many people who feel like him, he buys a small farm out in the middle of nowhere with his family.

South Park is in a weird spot Half the fan base wants more ground stories with childlike adventures that go off the rails The other half likes the political commentary and thinks they should stay on that Political commentary has always been a part of it (Ms.Cartmen sleeping with Bill Clinton to make 40th trimester abortions legal) but South Park is at a cross roads do they go back to their roots and try more simple stories that are ground or stay on the political parodies? That would make an interesting episode breaking down the origins to current special on how their counter culture became tv culture

I thought it worked perfectly with Randy being in control of the town for half the season, then he gets run out of town, and we had 3 or 4 "normal" episodes like Season 21-22, and then the final episode they had to cave ask him back again. They could do it every season from now on, have Randy open the first episode with Tegridy Farms in control of everything again, and then he gets run out of town mid season but always somehow is needed for the finale so he gets control again for next season... Trailer Park Boys does this with the boys going to jail at the end of every season and getting out at the beginning of the next season, swearing this time they're never going to jail again... I would love it! That finale episode with Randy, Jesus, and Santa doing fresh Tegridy coke is one of the best things I've ever seen. With the way things have gone since then in the world, we will look back on that episode in the future as an example of how open the world was in 2019, how much progress people were ready for, before this whole covid scheme started...

(Besides the first couple seasons when the show was more about character with social commentary mixed in instead of primarily social commentary) when Randy is extreme, he is used to show the extreme parts of society. He goes above and beyond to look stupid and exploitative to show how stupid people look who follow major social trends (at least to Trey and Matt). Then, at the end of the episodes, the boys point out how dumb he looks and what priorities should be. He does evolve in ways that makes sense because he follows how society has evolved. People sell out, they act like selfish, narcissistic jerks who can’t acknowledge their own flaws or how their actions affect other people. Tegrity farms also just shows how corrupt we are at this point. Matt and Trey always had a voice of reason and a moral to South Park, but now they just kinda gave up in trying to do that. You can see that a lot in the new post Covid special. They are saying, “this is where we are heading. And folks like Randy still don’t care or take any responsibility.” I liked how this commentary pointed out how it also made sense with his character, though. He has felt unfulfilled his whole life and just attaches to the next thing. I don’t really pay much attention to Randy because he’s supposed to be awful, but I never really had it laid out like this. I am not sure if it was completely intentional (besides like, middle age crisis type trope) because the show isn’t the best at continuity. They have changed Clyde’s last name at least once and forgot plot points from earlier episodes in order to make new ones (I.e. butters had his first kiss I’m Hooked on Monkey Phonics, but they say he never had his first kiss in order to make him a pimp seasons later.)

I have such mixed feelings about where the show is, especially with Randy. I started watching only a few years ago, when I was in college. Personally, the kids are my favorite of all the characters in the show, particularly the main four. It’s why I like SP’s video games- they focus on the kids being kids and how it spirals into sheer insanity. I don’t mind Randy having Tegridy Farms- I agree that it feels natural, and I think it’s hilarious! One of my favorite episodes was the one where he started selling veggie burgers made with weed? And he had those shirts: “Tastes like s***, you won’t care”? Absolutely priceless. But I get kind of sad that we don’t see the kids as much. “Band In China” was really fun for me because hey, it’s the kids! And the vaccination special was amazing to see, with the kids being the main characters and having conflicts that are funny but also feel somewhat serious. I hope there’s more of that. I just prefer Randy as a secondary character rather than the protagonist of THE WHOLE SHOW. I think because I find it easier to attach to the kids emotionally and thus care about the outcome of the conflict. But I agree that Matt and Trey shouldn’t force themselves to make episodes about the kids, especially not just for the fans. That’d be giving up their ‘tegridy.
