I think my personal biggest issue with the late seasons is the characterization of Leela. I feel she has become a real caricature of what she used to be, not just with drinking, but she's so much... more oblivious and aloof than ever before. There are times when Fry feels leaps and bounds more emotionally intelligent than her. It's like instead of becoming on even footing in their relationship, he has progressed and she has regressed. I think you could say that she allowed herself to be less serious after committing herself to unserious fry, but it doesn't come off like that lately. There are moments where she seems more like herself, but the vast majority of her scenes bother more than any "topical" episodes.

@BaconJake143 ай бұрын
My big problem with Quids Game, (aside from feeling like the story was rushed as someone who did watch Squid Game), was just how much they hammered in Fry's "I'm not a cheater" mentality. It was brought up so much that it did detract from the episode for me, and I can think of 3 times off the top of my head Fry did cheat. He cheats in the poker game in Into the Wild Green Yonder by reading his opponents' minds, while he wasn't the one who overclocked Bender he did knowingly play with him to get back at Mom's sons in Overclockwise, and he makes a literal deal with the devil in The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings to become a master holophoner. It was just a very strange direction to base an entire story around. Not to mention that with as much of a hard ass his dad is in Cold Warriors I doubt he would go along with his mom's plans to let him win in all the birthday games (though I can concede that maybe his dad adopted a more hard ass mentality as Fry got older). That whole episode was just a miss for me. The rest of the season though I really enjoyed and I agree it was much stronger overall than the previous 10 episodes.

23:45 I think this is a great example of how parents can traumatize their kids even when they have the best intentions. In Jurassic Bark, Fry underestimates how much someone can care about him and in Quids Game it's kind of shown where these feelings become textualized for Fry as from his perspective he loses his friends but, is never shown it wasn't his fault. On top of that not knowing his parents' intentions doesn't help in breaking his thoughts of not being the favorite child and feeling that much more undesired.

I feel like Fry and Leela adopting Sally would be the kind of thing done for a really good emotional one-off, but would somehow be undone by the end of the episode unless it is a series finale. And honestly either way would be really disappointing. What has always made Futurama stand out to me from the other animated comedies is that it actually does maintain some sense of continuity including major character development and status quo changes. I would absolutely love if, since this is their third revival and now will-be sixth series finale, they start really pushing the limits and start experimenting with bigger permanent changes, not just the possible adoption of Sally, which I think the implementation of Kiff and Amy's kids has shown they can incorporate new kid characters, but bringing back Marianne and challenging themselves to find new things to do with Zoidberg once he has that out from the "his life is miserable" joke (also having a committed romantic partner does not somehow magically make all your problems go away cough-cough Spider-Man cough-cough)
@tiablue91063 ай бұрын
I agree, I think the idea that zoidberg needs to be single to keep his comedic angle is a rather weak defense. His co-workers and the universe in general still treat him like crap so. I know this is an extremely pedantic point to kinda complain about, but it kinda annoys me how this is production "Season 9" and not "Season 8B" like it should. With all the details you mentioned being shared with the last season, the show being picked up and renewed in batches of two, plus the numerous voice guests being featured for both, it's kinda obivious that they repeated their move of having one production season being split into two broadcast seasons. It does feel weird following production order to go from 26 to 10. Maybe Hulu had something to do with it, but I'm kinda spectulating here
@blakebakedacake46182 ай бұрын
I dont know, its pretty common to have both short seasons and several being picked up at a time. Like the simpsons even despite being longer normally gets renewed in batches of 2. Due to that, the pretty standard release gap, and all the way down feeling like a pretty standard season finale, I think this is a different situation to the previous occasions. The only remaining weird part is the repeat guest appearances, but I think its plausible it was just easier to work with the same people they had recently again due to the scheduling and budget limitations. Maybe they just knew one production seasons wouldve been treated as two from the outset this time for some reason or something idk

I don't know if anyone else will agree but by far the most jarring part of the Hulu era to me is that Fry isn't the main character. Fry has 4 episodes focused around him, The Impossible Stream, Quids Game, The Temp and Otherwise. The Impossible Stream and The Temp are Fry centric but the center is that Fry either can't talk or isn't in the episode while Quids game and Otherwise focus on Fry but also have a lot of focus on all the side characters within the episode as well. It's just weird to me that Amy has 2 episodes focused on her and they are almost entirely Amy centric episodes while Fry, the main character we usually follow, has 4 episodes focused on him and he isn't even in the episode really for 2 of them and for the other 2 is more so just a featured character.

I'm a bit surprised to hear the sentiment that "this revival doesn't rly know what to do w/ leela" bc while it's not an exact equivalent, this is what I've basically thought abt fry in the revival. like aside from "quids game" he doesn't rlly get a single story that doesn't have to do w/ leela. specifically in the prev season I felt like they did more w/ her than him (working at fulu, watching amy's kids, becoming a doop captain, etc), and now, bc this season did even less w/ their relationship than the previous, he's just kinda there most of the time. it's almost like simpsorama all over again lol. and not to be a member berry, but 'member when fry, leela and bender were like a lil trio who went on space adventures? idk why but I feel like the show having farnsworth, amy, zoidberg and hermes along for the ride in like every ep is making me "feel" the group dynamics less or smth...

I generally resist the whole “introduce to a new generation” argument for doing remakes and reboots. But in Futurama’s case, coming back is so engrained to its DNA that it’s hard to ignore. I was introduced to Futurama around the time of the Comedy Central reboot, and while I agree with the popular consensus that it wasn’t as great as the original Fox run, Meanwhile was for me a significative episode that closed the show in a highly emotional note, more than the Devil’s Hands. So while I wanted Meanwhile to stay as the definitive end of Futurama, I guess it isn’t a betrayal to the show’s essence to be brought back, And I hope it could introduce a new generarion to that wonderful show.

All my issues really come down to continuity. I know its never been super critical to the show, but after certain big moments in previous series and the fact some of them did get to play big roles it just feels so weird to not keep going with them. I don't think zoidberg needs to be alone to be funny being the biggest one. I'd fully enjoy seeing him have a partner more than any joke they can make without her.

46:18 just gonna say this here- I have never, before this video heard of “fyre festival”. I didn’t even know the music festival in the episode was meant to be a parody of any specific real life event, just false advertising of events in general. Like for a recent example, the “Willy Wonka experience” thing that was trending last year. Anyway, when you don’t have that idea in your mind, it’s still quite a good bit. Now that’s how you parody.
@job407Ай бұрын
i think a fun way for them to resolve stench and stenchability as a whole would be to say that the fry/leela time distortion thing happened but to then have the professor discover this, show him the girl and then zoidberg goes out and tries to find her, however no matter how hard he tries to re-create the scenes from this alternate universe she just doesn't seem that into him this time, and that's because he's trying too hard to make it work and the reason why i think that'd be fun is to show people "hey we understand you want this but if you got it it wouldn't be the same as the one you fell in love with the first time around" at the end of the episode though zoidberg still offers her the surgery, she still complements his smell as an act of gratitude before walking off this would even allow her to return as a recurring character and perhaps even a friend to zoidberg still giving him a happy ending but one that could easily be used against him for comic effect by mentioning how he DIDN'T end up in the timeline where they're a couple

@Johnny2Cellos They referenced a beanie baby documentary everyone forgot about too, fast fashion was pretty topical, it's definitely toned down but it's absolutely still uncreative for the most part.
@Johnny2Cellos3 ай бұрын
I’m sorry but no, people need to stop thinking topicality just means “thing I recognize”- that is NOT the problem with an episode premise that is too topical. Neither of those things fit into the problematic topical story tendencies. The concept of “fast fashion” does not strictly date the episode to a specific time or place that makes it age poorly. Nobody thinks that the Beanie Baby episode was referencing a specific documentary (it wasn’t) The problems with stories like the Covid or NFT episodes is that the humor is SO reliant on a specific thing that happened in a specific time that they will age poorly.

I still hate the change they made to frys mom. I keep seeing people say that the episode with her are super emotional, but its never been that way for me me because this character is not frys mom. Frys mom was written as a person who dod not pay attention or care about fry or her kids because she was such a sports fan that it consumed her entire life/attention span. The show tells you this all the time and made it pretty clear. It wasnt until these new episodes that they just changed frys mom into someone who loves and always cared about fry and her family and you never see anything relating to sports now.
@Johnny2Cellos3 ай бұрын
I'm sorry, but I think this is just an incredibly narrow view on how writing can work. Fry's mom has been in ONE episode of the revival, and it pointedly DID include a reference to her sports obsession with her hiding all of her signed Mets baseballs for Fry at his birthday. She was written pretty one note initially because that was funny in her limited screen time. They ALSO did this with Fry's father, Yancy. He was a very one note conspiratorial patriot type. Expanding those characters in episodes like Cold Warriors, Game of Tones and Quids Game is a natural thing to do with characters that you start to give MORE screen time. We had only seen incredibly limited scenes with either character that prioritized comedy over emotion. But literally nobody is just a one note caricature, it's completely reasonable to explore those characters motivations more thoroughly given the opportunity.
@Sovert013 ай бұрын
@@Johnny2Cellos I think the way they are shown now is better, but to me it feels weird that the way they were introduced and shown aren't really in the show anymore. Yancy growing up make sense and Fry's dad being hard on his kids to toughen them up are perfect ways to expand on these characters. However Fry's mom I couldn't believe is the same person. She is soo caring and loving and saying she was shown to be not caring was for a joke I don't think really makes all that sense. If the other characters backgrounds were expanded why was hers changed?
@SeeIn2D3 ай бұрын
I've really appreciated the character development of Fry over the series history but I feel like it's definitely been brought to the forefront in the Hulu run. He's still the same old goofy/dopey Fry but he feels a bit more serious and grown up (I'm sure part of that is also due to Billy West's voice just not sounding as youthful as it once did). Like he's matured a ton and even his reaction to the memories from the plasma sea and kind of how he ruminates on that experience shows that he's much more introspective now. This run certainly hasn't been perfect thus far but Hulu season 2 has been across the board much better than season 1, and I think the show is aging much more gracefully than I feared it would. Can't wait for the next two seasons and I really really hope that the Fry and Leela child thing gets actively explored more and is made into a part of the show like Amy and Kif's kids. This show has always felt kind of age agnostic and you can appreciate it at any age, but as I'm getting older and I'm getting to that point in my life where I'm getting married, and will likely start thinking about kids, it's nice to see these characters that I've had a connection to for most of my life, going through those same things in meaningful ways.
