@featheredcanine18974 жыл бұрын
I’ll never understand people who think The View From Halfway Down should’ve been the finale. Each of Bojack’s conversations in the real finale, especially the one with Diane, is incredibly important to the show’s overall message about how not everything in life gets resolved but you can still make the best of what you have. So many people say Nice While It Lasted was “underwhelming”, but I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be.
@vinceknox44254 жыл бұрын
I view it similar to Breaking Bad - the penultimate episode is the climax, and the finale episode is the resolution.
@danieljackson24964 жыл бұрын
It’s a fitting end imo yes the view from halfway down was a masterpiece but it definitely shouldn’t have been the ending it just shows people with real depression issues that there’s no hope and when you do shitty things and you get your comeuppance that you should just give up. Nice while it lasted I feel was a fitting end it leaves the story open to continue and maybe not satisfying for some but that’s a real life ending Life’s a bitch and you die Sometimes but sometimes life’s a bitch and you keep on living.
@hermionegrangerwannabe94824 жыл бұрын
I agree, the series ending with Bojack's death would've been bad for his character development. His death would've been the easy way out, him living and taking responsibility is much better for him and the overall meaning of the show

Maybe it’s not considered underrated, but the episode when Diane gets an abortion deserves to be on this list too. The plot line about how abortion is viewed as a completely legitimate decision is not one many shows take and I’ve never seen a show be able to do so while maintaining the humor and tone of the show without it feeling like a melodrama.

I love the calm, sort of somber ending of the final episode, ending things in The view from halfway down would've been a cop-out. To many shows end with it's problematic main protagonist dying, but here we get to see something more needed: that Bojack deals with the consequences of his previous actions, and starts to look for how to live his life after them, but knowing it won't ever be back the same it was.

Best Thing That Ever Happened is one of my personal favorites! I love the character study of Princess Caroline and the study of her and Bojack’s relationship. I think even in this episode, one of the themes of the finale was there, cherish the time you’ve had with a person but that doesn’t mean you need to continue the relationship with them. It just took PC and BJ a while to realize that. Also the finale is great and anyone that says it should’ve ended at Half Way Down is misunderstanding the themes of life in the show, imo.

it makes me sick to even think about the view from halfway down being the final of the show. this show was about mental health awareness and showing the worst parts but ALWAYS focusing on the fact that you can and should live with a your mistakes and depression and ending the fucking show with his suicide (if he survived or not) is THE single worst thing you could do. This show wasn't only for awareness but to help people in similar situations like Bojack and for me personally the last episode we got was perfect, it gave me the hope I needed to not feel like suicide is the right answer and it, to me, really focuses on the feeling of greatfullness that he felt to still be alive and to have a second chance at life

A Horse Walks Into a Rehab really hit me differently because it showed the heartbreaking path of how BoJack became dependent on alcohol, being coerced into drinking several times when he wouldn't have otherwise (his dad giving him whiskey after he walked in on him hooking up with the secretary, and Sharona spiking his juice when he didn't want to be drinking). It really changed the way I saw his alcohol addiction. Ultimately, he still needs to be accountable for his actions, but he was using substances to numb out the anxiety of being a laughingstock, or the pain of being emotionally abandoned by his parents. I feel the finale to the 3rd season doesn’t get enough luv. The deal with spaghetti strainers was goofy as shit but I loved it. And Bojack had a lot goin on that episode: grieving for Sarah Lynn, having a great heart to heart with Diana where we learn she Was a Horsin Around fan, trying to do Ethan Around but stopping himself from continuing a cycle of ruining someone’s childhood, the prospect of a Possible daughter looking for him, all this leading to that final scene where the horses are running and the music is swelling up and Bojack is swelling up and is excited and confused but feels Something and I’m excited and confused and wanna know where this is going and BOOM End credits. Goddamn season 4 couldn’t come quick enough for how excited I was after That.

Great choices! I didn't know how I felt about the series the first time I watched it, and was ready to give up on it...then I saw "Say Anything," and that gut punch hooked me right in. I think it's so important because you realise, "oh, this show isn't JUST about a depressed horse and his shenanigans." So many series show their main characters doing terrible things, and there's never any long-lasting impacts on their relationships. I thought BH would be the same, then the show makes a point of showing you that actions have consequences, and it's willing to step out of Bojack's POV. "The Best Thing to Ever Happen" is weirdly one of my favourite episodes, or definitely the episode I've watched the most times. I've been PC, I've bent over backwards for people, and to see her fight with Bojack and how they hashed out EVERYTHING (their unspoken resentments, the past relationship, their feelings towards eachother, why PC is compulsively driven to bail people out of their problems) is SO cathartic for me. I almost never see it brought up, so I'm really glad you guys featured it in your list.

It was a huge character development, and I mean, Diane trying to leave is hilarious. Plus there's a lot of great costumes (not to mention timeline appropriate), we get good Diane and BJ dialog and all the realizations we see for PC and Todd are so fun. It's honestly one of my favorites. This list is super legit though.

The fact that people wanted a show so focused on mental health, recovery, and becoming a better person despite your past mistakes to end in the main character dying by suicide is actually a bit disturbing to me. I know that's probably not the intention behind what people are saying, but as someone who sees parts of my younger self in Bojack and has been in residential care and has worked my ass off to improve while still struggling with suicidal ideation, it rubs me the wrong way that people think that The View From Halfway Down should be the "real" ending. It's like saying the only way out once you've hit rock bottom is to just _die in the pit._ And from a writing perspective, as a writer myself, that's such a cop-out, too. The final episode _is_ cathartic. For me, that's because it shows that everyone is moving on, even though Diane is struggling deeply with it. Bojack has hurt these people so deeply, and while they may not forgive him for his actions and they still hold him accountable, they still acknowledge the extent to which he'd changed. You wouldn't get something like that out of The View From Halfway Down. Hell, if Bojack had just straight up died, the show would be at risk of _absolving_ him because of his death. Knowing this show, I doubt that would have happened (or at least not to the extent I'm thinking), but it wouldn't have been _nearly_ as satisfying of a conclusion. For as good as VFHD was, I'd have been pissed if it ended on that. Sorry if this is poorly written, it's 7 am and I have been up for almost 24 hours so I am ✨ incoherent. ✨ But yeah. Nice While It Lasted is a great conclusion with a solid message. And I really don't get how people don't see that.

Tbh Best thing that ever happened is the episode I relate to the most. I literally never connected to any character as much as I’ve connected with Princess Carolyn.

I think that the very first episode of the series is extremely underrated. The episode is wonderfully made, giving us a very real introduction to the current state of bojacks life and how sad it really is, and gives us a great look at the other characters in the show. From the beginning where he gives a drunken interview with Charlie rose to the end where he realizes that Diane and mr peanutbutter are dating, the entire episode is a work of art and it’s kind of sad to see that most people just gloss over this amazing episode.

the episode planned obsolescence is probably one of the most underrated in my opinon. It never really hit as hard to others i know who've seen it, but as an aspirong actor/singer, i really really connected with gina and her story, taking a shot only to realise you may never be good enough. Also Todd's silly asexual story was so funny

100% agree about The Shot, Best Thing That Ever Happened, and A Horse Walks Into a Rehab (and Nice While It Lasted although I don't consider that one underrated). I would've also put It's You, A Quick One While He's Away, Brand New Couch, and Hooray! Todd Episode! I feel like most ppl would say The Telescope, not Say Anything, is where it really gets interesting, and I'd have to agree with them… Say Anything was definitely a gamechanger but The Telescope made me feel SEEN in a way I really wasn't expecting.

This was great. Giving a lot of love to episodes that don't get it. I actually disagrees about like half of these but the other half I completely agreed (I like ever episode anyway it's just that some I love so much more). Personally I would have put The Telescope, Still Broken and Zoey and Zelda.

My honorable mention: s04e01 "see mr peanutbutter run", just for that opening: "Day 75 at sea, theres a darkness brewing on the horizon. What say you skippy?" "I think you got a touch of the ocean madness margo" "and i think you got a real smart mouth. You want another night in the box?" No! Anything but that!" "Then quit your yappin, and fix mama a sazerac" But my actual favorite is s03e01, "start spreading the news". Its not the most important to the whole series aside from being the genesis of the "girl in new mexico" tape, but i think overall it has some of the tightest humor and best voice acting. Even just the way that will arnett says the one line: "Thank you, Jill." makes it a standout. But that conference call is the real highlight of the episode, and one of my favorite mr peanutbutter scenes ("oh could you literally mark my words? Because i do want to refer back to this later on.") and just leaves me laughing uncontrollably every time i watch it. In fact, if i had just one episode to introduce people to the series with, s03e01 is the one i would choose

Say Anything is a great pick for #1. This was the first episode that made me realize the true emotional, witty, and experimental nature of the show. The mic drop at the very end (Happy birthday Princess Carolyn), the fact that its main focus is a character besides Bojack, how the timeline neatly overlaps with the next episode, The Telescope, this was definitely a turning point in Season 1. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s the literal first episode of the second half of the season as well.
