I first saw Tom and his amazing talent when he came to the small parent co-op that my 2 oldest kids attended, Trout Gulch School in Aptos, right around 1981 or '82. He was the first person I ever saw use ribbon tied to long poles, dipped into a bucket of soapy water, and swung around to make giant bubbles. I think he was the person who invented this technique. Thanks so much Tom, you really are an inspiration and I'm glad to see you are still here in Santa Cruz, blowing hot air!

They told me that I had six minutes. I told them that I'm really bad at keeping track of time when I'm performing. They said "No problem" they would have a guy standing by the camera and he would hold up 3 fingers when I have 3 minutes left and then 2 and then 1. Perfect, I could just let go of the idea of keeping track, when they show me 1 minute, I'll do the cube then the carousel and get off. But I was going along and had more time than I thought so I did another and then another, I lit a second cigarette and did some more and still no 3 minute, 2 minute, 1 minute warning. Finally I just wanted to finish and did it all and ended. I had no idea that I did nearly 9 minutes but the staff guy told me that Johnny liked the act and he called off the counter guy and just let me go.

There are probably other ways of doing tricks with bubbles now that don't need to come from smoking or using cigarettes. I remember when I was a kid in the 90's I would see TV ads for new bubble wands that made huge, unique-looking bubbles. I even had big bubble wands I used to play with as a kid. Not sure if we still have them at this point.

Damn the Johnny Carson channel has some pull - this video used to be on Tom Noddy's channel, which has since disappeared, and now this video has a Johnny Carson watermark.
@TomNoddy3 жыл бұрын
Well ... when performing on the Tonight Show we signed an agreement that gave that company the rights. I considered it and decided that, given the pluses and minuses, it would be advantageous to sign (boy was it ever?). So, I actually never did post it on my channel but another bubble performer who gave me credit when posting it, put it up and it stayed there for years before it went viral. At that point, the Carson company became aware of it. If they want to maintain their rights in such matters they have to act to protect those rights. The guy asked KZbin if they could leave it where it was but put up their proper credit. KZbin told them that they had no mechanism to make that happen. They could leave it or remove it. The guy at Carson chose to remove it and immediately repost it on their channel. It broke the viral fever (it was skyrocketing at the time) but it maintained a place for it and it's a place where no one will act to take it down. ... works for me.
@hoodglasses82373 жыл бұрын
@@TomNoddy Thanks for the reply, and insight! It's wild how I may have never heard of you or seen this act without the KZbin algorithm gobbling it up, yet I loathe how KZbin handles content distribution, especially for older content. The Carson Organisation owns the copyright and must have got it taken down.
@TomNoddy4 жыл бұрын
Yes, they have to act to protect their copyright if they become aware of it. If they don't, their rights can fade. In this case, the guy told me that they tried to just ask that YT just allow them to "claim" the post as theirs and leave it ... but YT told them, no, they could ask that it be taken down ... so ... they did that and simultaneously posted it on their channel ...
