This was 1976. Standing ovations didn't become the constant thing it is today until the 1990s. I'm a big fan of both, but in 1976, I seriously doubt either expected more applause than they received for that time.

The format wasn't well suited for it. If they'd come out together, absolutely. But it's TV and the producers probably wanted separate entrances to keep viewers around for the commercials and ratings intervals.

Fred's song writing, as it may be in the "old style," is superior in quality and his lyrics classy, not just for the sake of the rhyme but for the story of the lyrics, intelligently written. They were talking how the songs had VERSES cut....but what they meant were INTRODUCTIONS, used to set up the mood of the song as well as transitions in a musical from the dialogue to the song. Example: the song "It's Been a Long Long Time": "Never thought that you would be, standing here so close to me. There's so much I feel that I should say...but words can wait, until another day.....so, Kiss Me Once and kiss me twice and kiss me once again, It's been a long long time..." etc. Hearing the introduction by itself most have no clue what song it is. Unless you have the original published sheet music, most sources, copied from other unknowing sources, NEVER show these introductions, and therefore people think that it is the complete song. Familiarity and decades of repetition of a song without the introduction dictates it is the complete song when it is not technically. Although even as a former music teacher, the longer the introduction, the more I would tend to lose interest in the song and fall asleep too lol.

You lie..."these guys" didn't have your negative attitude and outlook. Astaire was on the scene in the 1920's and he's singing this song 50 years later in 1976 when many from his generation would have been yapping and whining like you about LA. You take liberties transposing your displeasures to dead people who can't speak for themselves in order to make it seem they agree with you. Why pick on the dead? There's plenty of alive folks who agree with you...tap one of them as an endorsee of your attitude.

I have always been an old movie fan. Yes, absolutely, for me Gene Kelly is the master!! His dance style grew out of his beliefs and his world view and his respect for the working class. Not too hard to imagine, he's a boy from Pittsburgh, a working class town. That's a big part of why he didn't dance in tuxedos or top hat/tails. Most of his best dances were in street clothes. He wanted everyone to feel that just walking down the street with a little extra something could be a dance. But he was extremely athletic even as a kid (hockey, wrestling, later on as an adult a lot of volleyball) plus he was trained in ballet, so, no, not everyone could do what he did. He was AMAZING!!

I never realized how well Fred speaks on film. Seems so many actors around Fred's age did sound elegant crisp, clear. Gene's voice is fine yet not as smooth. I wonder if actors used to have to train those speaking voices for their films.

''Late night'' today is a cesspool of sickness with freaks the likes of lying, leftist, lunatics, Colbert and Kimmel; not to mention, anyone else unlucky enough to be caught in front of a screen while the current fare airs would also find themselves having to contend with the doings of this poor, hapless, clown, the ineffectual ''Jimmy'' Fallon. Sad times, indeed.

Wow, vaguely thought I'd seen some of this years ago, but now realize I hadn't. People will say Fred was the greatest dancer of all time. I disagree...he was the greatest entertainer of all time. You watch his work over the decades, he covered all bases. Tap, jazz, ballroom, ballet, modern, thrown all together in his unique Astaire way, and changing through the years. Add piano and drum playing, song writing. Then have him introduce more classic songs than anyone (Sinatra came close, but a chunk of his songs were Fred's first). And to see him and the incredible Kelly in one of their last appearances together, reminiscing? Heaven, I'm in Heaven!

Many people forget - or don’t know - that ‘One for My Baby (and One More for the Road),” which is so closely identified with Sinatra, was introduced by Astaire in “The Sky’s the Limit (1943).

Astaire's passing marked the end of the first great era of Hollywood musicals; Kelly's passing marked the end of the second. Notice how there has never been a third.

Imagine if you had fred astaire, gene Kelly, sammy Davis jr. And John Travolta, and Patrick Swayze, and Michael Jackson on the same show with Johnny Carson. Wouldn't that be something.

Gene Kelly singing "I've got a crush on you" OMG!! He did a dance number for that song for "An American in Paris" but it got cut from the final movie. It probably still bothers him a bit!! Oh, those things that end up on the cutting room floor.
