@@ivandzaja6251 they told me there's was nothing they could do, and that my only option was to turn myself in and hope that they were lenient on me for coming in by myself instead of waiting to get caught. And I've asked the embassy a couple of different times too, because the Chief Consular Officer has changed three or four times in as many years, so each departing chief has learned less and less from their predecessor, and has had less and less of an opportunity to understand everything going on in the country, and therefore been less and less equipped to effectively train their successor. Tiff if normally a position that is held for many years so that they really understand the country and it's laws, procedures, and even language and culture. But I suppose given the circumstances the i position has become a bit of a nightmare to hold that position - it's also responsible for conducting final interviews for Myanmar people seeking visas to the US, which is just about half the country right now.

As a Burmese, it's hard to imagine how we lived before 2010s. Politics was always like "big brother is watching". We hardly ever talked about it, and those who did were imprisoned or disappeared. Cell phones were like a vanity for the rich to show off. Internet was unheard of. Then came the democracy (kind of), and every aspect of our lives got better for like 10 years just before the 2021 coup. Now, full-blown civil war is brewing and it feels like our lives are regressing. It sucks to be born in this country.

I'm surprised at Johnny's ability to explain Rohingya genocide accurately. For those who wonder, the only reason military did this is it needed support from the people especially from Buddhists because at that time, people started experiencing democracy, using internet and saying how corrupt, greedy and cruel the military junta is. And military achieved its goal, but elected govt closed its eyes to the atrocities because the amount of misinformation and people's hatred to Rohingya was too strong at that time. Junta have erased Rohingya from the list of Myanmar ethnic group since 1980 so almost everyone here hadn't heard of Rohingya until 2017. All we knew at the time is they were a few thousands of Bengali people from Bangladesh who was trying to invade Myanmar. Facebook absented to stop hatred and misinformation, and still fail to perform. May be I am in denial, but I wouldn't entirely lay all the the blame on Facebook. it's the sum of paranoia, lack of ability to find information, poverty and negligence of the people. It's a slap in the face to Myanmar and her people and I am very ashamed of it. Now we are trying to eliminate military and start winning.

And even if you choose to still know nothing about this conflict, comparing people who are part of a country being persecuted by their own government without a leadership of their own is worlds apart to Gazans who had their own election, and have plenty of foreign funding for their own people's goals (even if those goals are genocide).

Please do more research on attrocities committed by the Rakine muslim population on the peaceful Buddhist people over decade leading to the genocide. Yes, Myanmar military is wrong, but don't try to whitewash and absolve the common muslim population of Rakine as if they were saints. The Muslim population have a problem called Islam, which activily discourage them to assimilate or co-exist with other religious people who are non-Muslim. See the daily issues cropping up in Europe i. e. France, Sweden etc. Where Islamic radicals are committing 'Jihad' on daily basis and so called common Muslims support or sympathise with extremist element in them even if they don't actively parcipate in extremist activity. Why Poland never report Of Islamic extremism attack because they don't take Muslim refugee, Simple. The problem with Liberal mind like ke you is you all take a idealistic position and start preaching. World is not ideal and pragmatic argument should be made, unless you talk about the issues within the Muslim society and Islam in general, you are not addressing the crux of issue. Liberals self-censor themselves thinking that if they talk about issues with Islam or Muslim society then they will be labeled Islamophobe. So much talk about free speech but all you Liberals do is provide sympathies, not the actual solution to the problem.

@@boring20 Brother, Genocide is definitely wrong. There is no "divide and rule" in play here. There is problem at Myanmar military side, we should talk about it, but please don't cover up or brush aside the problem of other side which is religiously motivated and supremacist ideology called Islam. This is what irk me, unless we don't feel brave enough to talk on all issues and protect one issue in whatever false sense of "right thing to do" we will never be able to provide a true sustained solution to the problems. It is very wrong notion that poverty or lack of education fuel radicalization. Osama bin Laden was an engineer, Abu Bakar Al-Bagdadi was a PHD scholar, many radicals who went from Europe to join ISIS were very affluent and well educated. Islam teaching have very real problematic things and proudly practiced by majority muslims. I don't know if you have read Quran alongwith Tafasir(commentaries) of Islamic gaints and early scholar like Jalal-al-Jalalayan, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Abaas, Qurtabi, al-Tabari etc and Sahi Haddiths of Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan an-Nasai, Sunan ibn Majah, Abu Dawud, Jami-al-Turmidh etc., Sira of Prophet Muhammad such as Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hassim or Fiqh of Imam Shafi, Hanafi, Hanabali, Maliki etc. I could provide a vast details of reference to justify my argument if you wish.

The time has *long past* for us to be in disbelief that social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, have such power to propel hate speech and misinformation into real-world massacres and genocide. I got chills and emotional as I watched it, knowing that something very similar is happening in Gaza right now.

I'm from Sri Lanka and I can somewhat relate to this. The Anti-Muslim riots in Sri Lanka in 2018 was very much facilitated through Facebook and other social media. This is what happens when countries like Sri Lanka embrace social media sites without any regulation whatsoever. It is people who spread the hate but I have never seen an attempt to regulate (not ban) Facebook by any authority or any analysis done on the damage it caused in spreading misinformation and hate.

Are you certain the lack of regulation wasn’t by design? I imagine this contempt is unfortunately still imbedded in its system. Some of the old regime or those more cunning still maintain positions of power. The original founder was forced to resign for many reasons, among them the fact that they intentionally turned a blind eye to policing not only hate speech, but coordinated gatherings through their very own invitation/RSVP system. And this is in his own homeland. Edit: Unfortunately you cannot trust a private business to police itself. The downward spiral of greed makes them choose money and property over human life everytime.

I sincerely appreciate your invaluable contribution of information. Burmanization has left a lasting impact in Myanmar, where a significant portion of the population remains influenced by the military dictatorship, even in the wake of the 2021 military coup. It's encouraging to see that minority communities, such as the Rohingya and ourselves (ethnic minority groups), are standing resilient in our quest to safeguard our identities and resist military oppression. Recognizing the extent to which we've been subjected to decades of military indoctrination, we're taking a strong stance to break free from these chains and strive for a more inclusive and democratic Myanmar. but it's hard to achieve democratic Myanmar unless everyone in Myanmar know the truth.

@@ErikBerg666 Hmm.. I don't know about the Rakine Muslim or why you stated that, like kind of a sect yeah? But lemme break it down for you about "The Islam phobic" thing is. The problem lies within Islam is pure ignorance. The mentioning of Muslim is also pure ignorance. The mentioning of Jihad is also pure ignorance. The mention of "only" Myanmar military or such is also ignorance. The mentioning of other countries and justified the Islam and Muslim is pure ignorance. You can addressed them as terriost if they're not "within" the terms of Islamic Jihad/the Rule of Jihad. Putting this aside in this case, which I needed to learn more about Rakine Muslim and the mentioning of killing innocent people. I can claim you're pretty ignorance of Islam religion and Muslims people. My breaking down point is simple. You can't justified the terrorist with another terrorism. For example. ISIS etc etc with majority of Islam. Otherwise 969 movement which emerge from the Buddhism can be considered the buddhist religion is terrorist. You can't claim something they're bad when you don't know them. In my Case Islam and Muslim. In your case, Social Media. If you want to compare the terriosm you should know where it all started, which completely going to break down your argument. But terrorism is terrorism. All in all they're bad no matter where it started or how. And I think you're being influenced by the western media/social media. And you think you can talk about how they called you "Islam phobic" if you talk about how Islam is this or that, or free speech is concern, there's no perspective of Muslims free speech otherwise all the western propaganda would be as clear as days. Don't be an ignorance/typical woke person. Don't be an arrogant/hated person. Learn more about Jihad if you want to talk about this particular subject. Your right is my left when we're facing each other Only by coming together the differences, you can see the right from both angle as well as left. Just a little piece of advice.

@@ahmedhussein1694 Brother, I was not denying that there are no extremist in other religions but when I am talking about Islamic extremism, it is unique in the sense that the religion Islam itself teaches extremism towards Non-Muslims, sanctioned and prescribed in the words of Allah and Prophet Muhammad. It is Sunnat for every muslim to follow the words of Prophet Muhammad as he is Uswa Hasana and al-Insaan al-Kamil. You will not be able to provide me references from Buddisht scripture to justify that extremism stems from that, a Buddisht extremist is an individual call but an Islamic extremist is coming from Islam itself. Genocide is definitely wrong. Islam teaching have very problematic things. I could provide a vast details of reference from authentic Islamic scriptures to justify my argument if you wish.

The entire concept of “Buddhist extremist violence” was the thing that finally broke me of the illusion that ideas themselves have inherent power and morality. It’s all about the people implementing them. All religions and ideologies have great good and great evil that can come from them. What matters is what you do.

@@sickomode6440I bet there are Jainist extremists in the world. If you or anyone else is unaware, Jainism is a faith tradition that came out of the same “soup” of ideas that Buddhism and more modern forms of Hinduism come. It has a lot of the same jargon (karma, dharma, reincarnation, etc) but a different spin on things, similar to how we in the west tend to categorize Buddhism And Hinduism together but as distinct concepts that are related. Many Hindus see the Buddha as a reincarnation of some god or another….and Jains are notable for how their monks wear face masks and carry brooms to sweep the ground in front of them to prevent themselves from harming even the smallest insect. I bet someone somewhere has “twisted” this into justification for violence so a peaceful world can be “made”.

@@-YOUNG_MASTER-😂😂 This comment is literally the embodiment of hate speech and misinformation that is highlighted in the video. Muslims make up 15% of Indian population. They have made up significant percent of the country since independence in 1947. No one in India is demanding sharia law. In fact, a Hindu nationalist party is in power for the past decade. A party who's members call immigrants "termites". A party who's ideological grandaddy (RSS) is literally based on the SS of Nazi Germany. This organization is also linked to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. More than 40 beef lynchings have been committed by hindu extremitsts in the last decade. Yes, lynchings in the 21st century. Hate speech against Muslims is literally on national TV. A law was proposed and passed in 2020 to kick out any muslim person who doesn't have proper citizenship documentation. When they were protests against this, the government called them "terrorists". What about non muslims? Yeah, they will be given an Indian citizenship. Apparently being a non muslim makes you a victim not a termite.

Thank you for making this video. The basis of democracy is that people from different camps and with different thoughts can discuss and have conversations. However, social media filters out content that doesn't align with our preferences, trapping people in information bubbles. Hatred grows between people of different faiths / political beliefs / race. This coupled with the lack of moderation, creates a pattern that repeats over and over in both developed and developing countries. It is certainly one of the main reason for the proliferation of extremism and populism in the 21st century.

Well said. Notice that polarization of people was relatively mild between 2000-2010. In 2012, Facebook went public. In 2014, India elected a far-right anti-Muslim leader called Narendra Modi who had mastered the art of social media. In mid-July 2016, Brexit happened. In Nov 2016, Donald Trump, against all odds, became the US president. It was only because of Covid that Trump lost in 2020. Ironically, it seems like products of democratic, capitalistic societies i.e. Facebook, Twitter et al, will one day bring an end to democracy & capitalism.

Thank you, Johnny Harris, for this enlightening video. It's akin to a historical lesson that will resonate for future generations. The necessity to recognize and denounce extremists within every society and religion cannot be stressed enough. As a Muslim, my focus had primarily been on extremism just by the burmese military. However, today, I've gained awareness about the presence of hate speech, extremism, terrorism, and Islamophobia among Buddhists. It's disheartening to witness government involvement consistently resulting in negative outcomes. Perhaps the most startling revelation was the lack of international coverage or outcry. It highlights the disparity in global attention and protests concerning issues in Southeast Asia, particularly those affecting Muslims.

Thank you for highlighting this; excellent journalism. The issue was previously discussed on Last Week Tonight. In countries with large populations, such as Bangladesh, Facebook can be extremely dangerous. We've witnessed numerous incidents, both good and bad, triggered by Facebook, like the recent Durga Puja event. We need more robust solutions rather than solely relying on foreign corporations. Some initial solutions could be: 1. Fact-checking the most shared or linked posts. 2. Engaging the local community in fact-checking, as they better understand the context, and rewarding them for their efforts. 3. Local fact-checkers could escalate dangerous posts for further scrutiny. 4. Prioritizing fact-checks and community feedback in UI so they don't get lost, unlike comments that vanish when people start sharing them. 5. Allow individuals to rate the level of danger associated with posts.
@topherno
@topherno Жыл бұрын
Exactly. However, those suggested solutions are great in theory though difficult in practice. For one, people are not necessarily interested in facts just b/c they're locals, even if they understand the context better. I'm just thinking e.g. how many in the US are woefully (and often proudly) misinformed on various domestic (local) issues. Altogether, it's the principal reason why numerous countries such as China, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Thailand, etc. have either blocked or limited it/censored content.

The Rohingya conflict started with the rape & murder of Ma Thida Htwe by three Rohingya men in 2012, followed up on 3 June Myanmar mob attacked a bus in Taungup that killed 10 Rohingya men. On 8 June exactly 3:50 pm after Friday prayers, thousands of Rohingya Muslims flooded the streets in Rakhine state, and started attacking and burning buildings. On 9th June the riot spread and the entire country got wind of it. (WHY DID HE LEAVE THIS CRUCIAL INFORMATION OUT)??? On 10 June, a state of emergency was declared across Rakhine. By then all hell had broken loose, but in the end, Rohingyas were pushed back since the country is Myanmar's majority, and the military sided with the obvious. He made it sound like only one-sided needed to be blamed and the monk as well. Also Facebook, KZbinrs also block comments or posts that show facts that Rohingyas weren't exactly the victims. The information got blocked by Facebook & KZbin showing violence from both sides. I'm disappointed he wasn't able to dig deep enough and show both sides of the conflict. Why did he purposely leave out the atrocities done by ARSA (Armed wing of Rohingya), they even massacred hundreds of Indian background Hindus which was reported by Amnesty International and all over the news. They had nothing to do with Myanmar locals or the Myanmar military. Yet ARSA still slaughtered them. If anything i said is untrue, please let me know. I'm happy to provide evidence.

I don't know if it's age or education, but he believes everything he reads and I have a tough time explaining that what is being said online isn't true. The problem with all of this is that many people just like my dad (both old and young) fall into the same category. It's easier than ever to manipulate the masses, yet nobody seems to realize it.

Mhm critical thinking is an essential skill. Traditional media has a quality and truthfulness problem as well, in part because it must reproduce the statements of politicians and various interest groups as they are, in part due to individual mistakes and biases of the people involved. But of course a random dude on the Internet is fundamentally so so much worse. Age? I suppose so, particularly people gain deeply ingrained beliefs with time that will never ever be questioned, and they can be hijacked. You can be told a truth, or something you believe to be the truth, and then chained a series of ever progressively more corrupt payloads to it. Though this has a scary efficiency with young people as well, but after a couple years they generally begin to question the foundations of their belief framework.

@@SianaGearz Love the answer! But in both cases... are we doomed? Basically, older people have a concrete understanding of things so it's either they fully agree or completely disagree, and younger people don't have enough information to confirm whether something is true or not. @@BluEyedRaven hey I'm struggling myself to keep an open mind, but not so open that the brain falls out! I'm not equipped to cure society. But I think people can be reached with counter arguments. Even if the foundation might not change substantially, a lot of the garbage tacked on top can. Myself being an Ashkenazic Jew of Bulgarian ancestry, citizen of Ukraine, living in EU for most of my life, originally from the East of Ukraine, Russian speaking, you might imagine that well uhh I've seen people harbor harmful beliefs and I've seen people change their minds, the whole Russia Ukraine Israel Palestine Gaza and Balkan (Serbia Bosnia Albania etc) are just ever present topics.

This exact same thing has been happening in India as well. People on social media is being flooded with either hinduphobic and Islamophobic (if they are Muslims and Hindus respectively). If their is even a small occurrence of violence within ethenic groups, fake news starts immediately causing more violence on both sides (as seen with Meitei and Kuki tribes during violence in Manipur, one of the Indian states). There is all sorts of extremist ideologies which undermine secularism all together. One demanding Gazwa-e-hind (Islamic India) or Hindu rashtra (Hindu India). Then there is politics being played on these issues. Which divides religions, ethenicities, casts, and others sects of people. Intellectual thoughts are undermined with stupid words naming and classifying people based on ideologies all the while media actively adds on to narratives instead of talking about unemployment or poverty. Hey Johnny, I really like your channel and your contents. And I'm a Burmese. Thanks for covering this. I hope to see our current situations documented by you. What I mean is 2021 protest and our struggle for a new nation which is based on REAL federalism and liberty values.

In my opinion any religion, ideology fails reality check to human nature. for example I am from christian country and christians are very peaceful on paper, but people give in to sin. I believe it's a smart choice on your part to quit Instagram, as it shows you won't back up the spreading of misinformation, bias and the manipulation of our attention by Meta. It gives people reach to news filled with propaganda and algorithm tries to maximise user's time spent based on their vulnerabilities to have more profit form ads. It's also worth checking who finances certain news stations.

Thanks Johnny. I’ve been heartbreakingly fascinated by this topic since 2017 and am so glad you gave it your touch and are able to spread the word of this tragic situation. The cruelty of the Tatmadaw and indoctrinated people is something I can’t believe exists in today’s age and I’m saddened that 1 million people will never see their homes again or as it they used to be.

Aye, though we do have to be careful to not go the other way round. There are rumours that people with legitimate concerns against the Western government have been silenced on the internet, ones that try to reason and have debates too. Hate speech is wrong but full silencing on the platform would also be wrong as well as it creates groups that would find alternative means to communicate and become more fanatic in their own sphere of influence .

I've been following your channel for a couple of years and today I see you highlighting my country. Thanks for addressing this serious issue; we are already suffering a massive population boom and this refugee crisis is no less than a burden for us. Yet, we Bengalis are always welcoming to people fleeing to survive. Our government has said that since we could manage 170+ million people, we can try to support a few million more. Long live Bangladesh and the Muslim brotherhood 🇧🇩

I only follow certain types of content creators, and you are one of them, J.Harris. Nobody - no media, no politicians, not even the print media - is eager to address this topic because it is not as glamorous or easy to understand as Ukraine. Thank you for bringing this to the attention of your audience.

As a person who comes from an ethnic minority who faces has faced persecution. I truly feel emphatic towards the Rohingya people. We humans are not supposed to live like this. This is not the way God desires us to live. May God have mercy on us 😢

Believe me when I say thta unless properly repented of, no injustice shall escape the Lord. All those who do evil will one day stand before their creator and answer for their crimes. Rohingya are not all that good, this video is very much lacking a lot of information, Rohingyas themselves caried out religious cleaning in their own ethnicity, Rohingya had a small amount of Hindu and Christian population also and when the Rohingyas were being pushed out of Burma these people killed thousands of Hindus and Christians and raped many Hindu women while on the move to leave the country, they killed almost all the Hindu Rohingyas to such levels that today people associate Rohingyas with only Muslim population.

Watching this content makes me realize more and more how disconnected we are from reality in the USA. We make oceans out of puddle, fight over issues that, although meaningful to some people, are largely self-centered, and forget that there are real crises going on in the world. We need to realize that there are more important issues to look out and speak out for. This are the real issues we should be campaigning against. This is what real hate speech looks like. This is what we should really be trying to prevent.

American media is way too insular and isolationist. I was shocked by how little actual news from outwith the States gets airtime compared ro other nations. Especially here in the UK. Yeah there's plenty of UK based news stories but there's lots of international stuff alongside it too. Something I rarely ever seen in the US. There may be a token international piece for a brief minute or so and that's about it. Sad really. It's something that needs to change. That's why so many people now turn to independent journalists and 3rd lattices to source news. Although that too can be a bad thing if the person giving the info has a bias.

As a Bangladeshi citizen we also see the brutality of the Burmese people/military toward Rohingya first hand. We Bangladeshi people are poor, but we somehow managed to help them and gave them shelter and food. Not a single developed country helped us or praised us for what we did and No one taking the responsibility to take Rohingya people back to their home country. Right now millions of them residing in Bangladesh with no earning source and envolving in crimes to make living.
