@@emanueldobos8452 Knowing the history in the Ottoman empire, the Greek Cypriots hated the government, not the Turkish Cypriots which to be real here, DID NOT EXIST. No Greek Cypriot, no Turkish Cypriot. The Ottomans divided the island by religion where there were the Muslim Cypriot, the Greek Orthodox Cypriot, the Cryptochristian Cypriot, the Catholic Cypriot which got extinct in that area and the Oriental Armenian Cypriot which also were blowed. Then the British came and changed the bureaucratic system with a more modern and based to the standards of the British Empire, but foolishly divided the Cypriots into Greeks and Turkish. For real everyone realises that the Turkish Cypriots in the island have more Greek-Phoenician DNA just like the other Cypriots rather Turkic-Oghuz DNA. And so the British started benefiting the Turkish Cypriots as they were closer to their interests which were supporting Turkey first in the 1900s and then in the 1930s and 40s. The same that happened in Rwanda between Hutu and Tutsis. As a result this hatred and division is fully British and then Cold War reasons(we should not forget how US played role in the division of cyprus) and in the end, the massacres and civilian violence was expected by both communities in the end, where in Bloody Christmas around 300 Turkish Cypriots died and 150 Greek Cypriot. Now we expect a reunification in the two-zones two-communities federation

As a Cypriot(a Turkish one) I kinda feel heartbroken when you didn't mention the referandum which was made 20 years ago which my family voted in favour of. Turkish side voted %74 yes because Turkey said we can vote freely but Greek side Vetod it. By quite the margin so we've done our part on this it's Greeks' turn to convince us now. Cuz even tho we didn't forget we forgived them.

I am Greek, I moved to Cyprus as a kid for a few years due to family circumstances. As a kid I faced odd behaviours from my classmates: people either loved me because I was Greek or they did not like me for not any clear reason. After seeing the series about Cyprus I understand why I faced a short of racism in school. Greek Cypriots have mixed feelings about Greeks as well since.

Greeks who immigrated from Turkey became second-class citizens and most of them were not given jobs and were condemned to starvation. That's why the Greeks who immigrated from Turkey to Greece stated that they were still loyal to Turkey and the Ottoman Empire and that they were treated better by the Ottoman Turks in the past.

How many Greek Cypriots can speak Turkish?

In order to give you a better explanation why this was happening: Before the war, the majority of the business were Greeks. So if you were a Turkish Cypriot you have to be able to speak Greek if you wanted to sell more. On the opposite side, the mix village of both communities was the main reason why some of the Greek Cypriot were able to speak Turkish. My grandfather was a Greek Cypriot Muhtar of a mixed village. When he was angry about something I still remember him saying words (mostly bad words) in Turkish so we (as small children’s) will not understand what he was saying. In conclusion, this Turkish Cypriot Grandfather was living most probably in the Southern Area of Cyprus. He lost his house during the war and now as a refugee is living in a Greek House. On the opposite side, me, myself, I lost my house as well and I’m living in a Turkish House in Limassol that I DO NOT OWN. Tragic, but it’s happening for real. War has no winners. Peace

Really informative video. However, I’m also asking myself why you didn’t cover the UN referendum to unite the Island in the early 2000s. The majority of Turkish Cypriots were in favor to unite whereas the Greek Cypriots voted in majority against it. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but I was assuming that Turkish Cypriots are entitled for a Greek Cypriot EU citizenship. Which means they could move to every other country in the EU. The main reason Greek Cypriot voted against the "Annan Plan" was because there was not any plans for demilitarizing the Island. That's something Greek Cypriot have been asking for decades... At the individual level, the original Cypriots are not trapped. In fact, they can travel to and work in the South, in Turkey, in all EU, in Britain, and in British colonies. In fact, it is the migrants from Turkey who are also TRNC citizens who are more trapped at the individual level. For TRNC citizens, the bigger problem is the fact the places they go don't feel like their country, this includes Turkey and South. But as long as they are in TRNC, they cannot be part of any organization that is recognized internationally, or in some cases even by Turkey. For example, no Turkish soccer team came to TRNC and played here. Though the original Turkish Cypriots are individually not trapped, they are still trapped as a community.

It is because Greeks on the island does not accept anything but a plan that unites Greece with Cyprus. That’s why they voted no to the plan. That move made the unification impossible. So it is Greeks who destroyed united Cyprus and kept Turkish soldiers on the island. Türkiye is clear of any blame after Annan plan had been rejected. Turkish Cypriots was hoping to be a part of EU and Cyprus without the influence of Türkiye, that’s why they voted yes for the plan since atrocities of Greeks had been demolished and reoccurring of those atrocities diminished in modern era. I am really glad you have talked with Turkish Cypriots as well. My issue here is that you are conflating the reason why Turkey is there today with the reason why Turkey invaded in 1974. The reason of Turkish invasion wasn't to make a land grab and at the time no one was looking for natural gas around the island. The reasons presented here represent the policies of the right-wing government that is ruling Turkey today. Back in 1974 the invasion was made to solely to secure the safety of the Turkish population living on the island. The prime minister that made the decision to invade, Bulent Ecevit, was a social democrat who used to be a journalist. In his collage years in London he wrote poetry on Greek-Turkish brotherhood. Before he made the call to invade the island he tried to coordinate a joint response with the British to stop the bloodshed diplomatically. An invasion was his last option and he only did it because he knew it was the morally right thing to do. The ultra nationalist Greek Military Junta that attempted to annex the island in 70s was after land grab and expansion. They were after Enosis, and Megali Idea, the hope of forming a Greek Empire that unifies all historically Greek lands (they were dreaming of a return to Byzantine Empire). Similarly, today the right-wing government in Turkey has dreams of returning to Ottoman Empire's glory and that's why they are after integrating Northern Cyprus to Turkey. But this was not the case before, there was even a UN plan to unite the Island and the Turkish side agreed on the UN brokered terms, but the Greek side refused in a referendum. This vote was an incredibly crucial moment for the island and I am very surprised that after so much coverage you haven't mentioned it once.

As you can understand it was a necessary compromise given that the Turkish population did not feel secure, which should be understandable in the context of what happened in the past. There are many Greek Cypriots today on the island who see the Turkish population as enemies. Also please don't bag issues with such nuances together and make statements like "they oppressed". Try to stay objective and emphasize with both sides.

try to understand this from the greek Cypriots' point of view. The Annan plan would have made Cyprus into a federation of two states where the Turk Cypriots would be vastly overrepresented and could essentially block all the important legislation for whatever reason (either legit or not). Lebanon has a similar system where the government is divided within ethnic lines and it has proven to be a disaster, with a country plagued with political instability. The Northen part is also much poorer than the Southern one so the Greek Cypriots would have to give a lot of their income to the north. This is not the greek Cypriots being selfish is just them putting their families first. Finally, and this is important, I have talked with a couple of greek Cypriots and they really don't like the idea of Turkish settlers who came illegally and occupied their houses would be entitled to Cyprus citizenship with the same rights as them. Besides this constituting a form of ethnic cleansing, it would also give Turkey an excuse to launch a new intervention under the pretext of protecting their citizens (either real or not). Considering everything that has happened and the Turkish government's increasingly aggressive rhetoric against Greece, I feel this is a very legitimate concern.

The Turkish Cypriot man talking at 05:55 speaks the Cypriot Greek dialect. Me a 26 y.o. Greek Cypriot who has never spoken to a Turkish Cypriot in my life can perfectly understand what he is saying. This goes to show the level of integration that past generations enjoyed. And it makes me even angrier that both Greek and Turkish Cypriot politicians drove the divide and pushed for their own agendas (Enosis vs. Taksim) from the 60s all the way untill the invasion in 1974. I think the tone of the episode also paints a great picture of how things are in the "TRNC". The ambilical chord parallel was spot on.

I'm Australian, and not particularly anit-British, but it does seem that the most harm Britain did, in it's colonial phase, was to export its culture of class: it's tendency to categorize people. By creating divisions between people, this - unsurprisingly led to divisiveness in a population that had previously been fairly integrated. It seems like Belgium did a similar thing in Rwanda, which laid the foundations of the genocide there.

Its experiment with an actual colonial empire was relatively short, picking up with the Spanish-American war and never really growing nearly as large as the European Empires. After WWII, the US turned to being a superpower, but not really an empire - certainly not a colonial one. In fact, it led a push for decolonization in the UN and even forced the hand of the UK to relinquish its claims. Sorry but I really don't have any idea what you're referring to when suggesting that the US tried to push class system onto other nations. They didn't even try it in the Philippines when that was an actual colonial possession. There's plenty of things in US history to be critical of. But, the reality is that they've been rather bad at anything that resembles actual colonial occupation. Its very clear that they would prefer to have quick interventions in crisis zones and not have to stick around. Let's try to stick to real history, huh?

Dear Mr. Harris Thank you for the great job. I have been to the TRNC 34 times; from 1988 to 2014. I lived in Karaolanoglu with my children and I experienced unbelievable things. I am missing one very important aspect in your documentary. In 2004, there was a referendum on both sides about joining the EU. The Turkish Cypriots voted Yes, the Greek Cypriots with No. Turkey was obviously willing to let all Cyprus be united and in the EU. After the referendum, the Turkish Cypriots were in shock. And I think I remember that after this, the TRNC even more oriented itself towards Turkey. And before that referendum, the EU always said both sides or none. The Greek Cypriots became a member in the EU. That was a broken promise or agreement.

I once watched a documentary series called "Blood and Belonging" that looked at the differences between cultural and genetic history. Tests on the inhabitants of Cyprus showed that Greek and Turkish Cypriots were a lot more closely related to each other than to anyone in Greece or Turkey.

Because the "Turks" in Cyprus are just Muslim Greeks that sold their religion to side with the occupier. In Ottoman occupied Europe it was easier to be a Muslim "turk" then an indigenous Balkan Christian. So many people converted to avoid the severe discrimination by the Turkish occupiers.

Britain has a lot to answer for. They came to the island and and started to pit Greeks and Turks against each other with sly tactics. Britain did nothing to help with regards to the invasion because they WANTED the island split in two, to maintain their military bases for Cyprus' prime location. USA (The ones who sold Arms to Turkey) - Henry Kissinger, U.S. Secretary of State in 1974: "There is no American reason why the Turks should not have one-third of Cyprus,”. “The Turkish tactics are right - grab what they want and then negotiate on the basis of possession,” “We certainly do not want a war between the two, but if it came to that, Turkey is more important to us,”

They British most definitely did not want the island to be split in two. Their mistakes happened while they were the imperial power there, creating a social situation that would result in Greek/Turkish conflict as soon as they left. This kind of situation happened throughout the British, French, Belgian and Italian empires. You should have no difficulty recognizing it for what it is. As for the USA-Turkey alliance, that is a relationship built entirely on geopolitics. The Turks were historic enemies of the Soviets/Russians, control Black Sea access for foreign navies, and occupy a key stretch of land between the oil rich Arabian peninsula and Europe. Turkey was also very Western-leanong until quite recently. Unfortunately they have this long history of conflict with some of their neighbors, including the Greeks, and are large enough to act as a bully if they want to. From this perspective, its pretty hard not to see why the US saw Turkey as essential and Cyprus as dispensable. It's not nice, but if you were up against the Soviet Union with nukes aimed at your cities, would you honestly have done differently? I wish I could say I would, but if I'm honest with myself .... No. Politics can force hard choices.

I want to start with a genuine wish that I hope I will see the whole island unified under one nation that each side (Greeks and Turks) represents equally where they live peacefully one day. However, someone unfamiliar with the region might assume there is no unity between Greeks and Turks due to Turkey's involvement or Turkey's push on the situation based on what they watch here. For those who might not know, back in 2004, the UN tried to unify the island under one nation Cyprus. The plan was to have a government under the two-state solution, which would legalize the current status quo. The majority of the international community supports the reunification of Cyprus. Long story short, the UN referendum to accomplish this solution was done in 2004. Turkey, "the invader/bad guy," supported the referendum and tried to ensure the Turkish Cypriots were going to vote for ."ES". on the other hand, Greece decided to stay "nat."al". As a result Turkish Cypriot community said "YES" to becoming one under one nation, but Greeks said "NO." Hmmm....... That was quite a blow to Turk's face since they are the ones who have been presented as the invaders or the bad guys that don't want to do good for the people on the island. Nevertheless, the Greek Cypriots got what they wanted as they were promised. They have been accepted into the EU and then demanded that there be no direct trade via ports and airports in Northern Cyprus as these are unrecognized and said that Turkish Cypriots should use Greek Cypriot facilities in the south if they are internationally recognized. This was rejected by the Turkish Cypriots. It's important to consider both sides of a story. I believe you may have overlooked some important information. It seemed to me that you portrayed Turkey as solely responsible for the problem and wanting the island to remain divided. However, I could be mistaken. On the other hand, I appreciate that you highlighted the reasons behind Turkey's decision to send troops to the island. I've watched many documentaries on this topic, and for some reason, this aspect is often omitted. lol. Although cooperation between Greek and Turkish Cypriots continues on some matters, Unfortunately, there is a lack of trust between the two nations on the island. It seems unlikely that reunification will occur while Turks remember what Greeks did to them and Greeks hold onto hatred towards Turks due to the 400 years of Ottoman Empire occupation in Greece. ​@@sampejke Ignorance, fear of the unknown (many have been brought up to 'fear/mistrust' our Turkish Cypriot neighbors even though most have never met a Turkish Cypriot in their lives) and finally a government headed by Tasos Papadopoulos at the time, that clearly did not want a solution and through his dramatic appearance on national TV the night before the referendum (the famous "crocodile tears" that Papadopoulos shed at the idea of reunification and "giving up the Republic of Cyprus") lured the naïve and undecided to vote against the referendum. Interestingly many of the "NO" voters from 2004 would gladly accept a solution now based on the Annan 2004 plan but regretfully those terms will never be offered again. We have been given a number of opportunities to solve the "Cyprus issue" but we are our own worst enemies..

I have a Greek friend ,who lives and works in Cyprus, visiting me this week. She believes that the partition of Cyprus was to the benefit of the retreating British Empire of the time; and is perpetuated to some extent, by the western states today. In the video, If you look at those large white patches on the map of Cyprus, you see the British bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. The island is strategically important as it sits in the eastern med, at the crossing point of three continents and within easy reach of the Middle East. No military power would want to give that up. If the island were to be united, they may be politely asked to leave. So this whole horrible and divisive situation benefits the west. Divide and conquer, while the Cypriots suffer.

The British practised division of people as standard practice during their colonial retreat. They divided my island (Ireland) in two, which led to decades of sectarian conflict. When leaving the Indian subcontinent in 1947 they partitioned it into India and Pakistan, with much the same result. There are numerous examples. Of course western interests are not the entire reason why Cyprus is divided today, but it plays a role.

Very misleading video overall. Firstly, there has been a UN referendum held in the early 2000s and the Turkish Cypriots voted in favor of reunion but the Greeks didn't. Also the reason why they feel trapped is not because of Turkey, it's because the world countries don't recognize TRNC.

Love the island, this reminded me of visiting in the eighties when I was a child and a couple of houses in the village where my parents have a house were burned out wrecks. Years later I heard the rumor that our neighbour had left the former occupants in a well, centuries of co-existence ended by the conflict. Now Greek Cypriots regularly travel to the north to get cheap beer, efes.

In 1970, after the military coup in Greece, the new government demanded that Makarios, who was not in favor of ENOSIS, step down and Colonel Nikos Sampson become head of state. Makarios did not resign and Greek Cypriot guards stormed the presidential palace. As the events escalated, the Republic of Turkey, using its guarantor rights, sent troops to the island on July 20, 1974, in accordance with Article 4 of the Zurich and London Treaty. Mutual attacks began, the Greek Cypriot guards attacked from their fronts but could not hold out. On July 22, 1974, the Turkish troops stopped at a certain point and waited for a peace treaty. In the absence of a peace treaty, the second operation began on August 13, 1974. On August 15, the operation ended at the borders of today's TRNC. This means that true historiography requires an unbiased attitude. At this point, the TRNC is a state. The United Nations Security Council should revoke Resolution 550. Until the resolution is revoked, the TRNC will not be recognized and the problems on the island will not end. In recent history, it was thought that the island would be reunited and become a member of the EU through a referendum with the Annan Plan, but the Greeks who said "no" against the Turks who said "yes" became members of the EU without the TRNC. This is not a solution, but a concrete on the basis of bigger problems. While it is obvious that Turkey could occupy the island if it wanted to, I suggest that you give up your pro-Greek attitude. Because this attitude has caused great damage to the Greeks in the past.

Dude you are completely ignoring a fundamental problem of the Annan plan. it allowed the Turkish military to remain in Northern Cyprus. No sovereign nation would allow that. Strip that provision and the provision requiring each community to reimburse it's citizens for immovable property (which ironically Northern Cyprus has do now after losing a court case anyways) to each community where immovable property or business was located reimburses citizens of the other community and the plan would have passed on the Greek side. Now, it may have failed on the Turkish side but such is life.

Great video! I'm curious if there is a generational divide between the Turkish Cypriots who saw the hostilities from the Greek Cypriots and the younger Turkish Cypriots on the island. Are older Cypriots (in general) more accepting of the current situation than the youth, or do the youth find themselves as being more likely to have accepted the new situation?

The referendum didn't go well, because the Greeks wouldn't accept a referendum that has, as its basis that TRNC is a separate country, and not an occupied portion of Cyprus.

I think it's rather embarrassing that it wasn't even mentioned that *everyone* including the government of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus supported the Annan Plan and unification in 2004. The *only* people who did not want unification were Greek Cypriots. Of course, the situation is completely different now than 20 years ago, when Greek Cypriots have made it abundantly clear that they do not want the unification of Cyprus, they merely want the island for themselves. Uninformed people will think that Turkey never wanted Cyprus to be united after watching this video, and that's certainly a shame when the exact opposite is true. Another clarification, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus became a de facto country on the 15th of November 1983, they waited almost a decade for negotiations with the Greek Cypriots, who refused dialogue as long as the Turkish military that protects Turkish Cypriots was still present on the island. It really is a grand misfortune that Greek Cypriots refused unification. It's basically guaranteed that Cyprus would today be a united country in the EU and in NATO, with three NATO allies present on the strategic island. What is even more sad is the fact that Greek Cypriots have been fed propaganda concerning the events in 1974 and prior. This alternative history is even present in the education system. Greek Cypriot children are taught that Turks attacked innocent Greek Cypriots and stole their homes, without taking any responsibility whatsoever for their crimes that caused the eventual division is Cyprus. This is the reason Greek Cypriots voted against unification, because they have a very uneducated deep hatred within them. The same is not true in the north, however, the victors of war never have the same mindset as the losers of wars. It's always easier to point fingers than to look in the mirror.

The people that did not want peace and unification voted against it. I should add that everyone with an IQ above 60, understood that the acceptance of the Annan Plan would mean that the island of Cyprus would have had three separate NATO allied troops on the island in the not too distant future. With the comprehension of this fact, any remaining Turkish troops would have been irrelevant from your standpoint, as they would have been there and legally bound to protect every Cypriot in case of an outside attack, just like the British troops that are also on the island to this day, but receive little media attention in the Greek Cypriot Media. The Greek Cypriots were ignorant fools on that day, and they accepted the status quo by voting against unification of the island and a final solution to the Cyprus Issue. You make your own bed.
