Nato cant do anything because ukraine is not part of it. Nato is a defensive organisation which means if any member is attacked then its an attack on all members. The history part is correct. But the new generation in Taiwan treasures their democracy. They were born and grew up in Taiwan, not China. They are biologically Chinese and identify themselves as Taiwanese. (kind of like Chinese-American or Chinese-Malaysian ) More and more people are preparing to fight against the invasion. They are schools （like black bear academia ) that teach people how to assist soldiers and protect themselves in battle, even teach them how to use guns.

Throughout my time living in Japan the spectre of an invasion of Taiwan has lingered over daily news here - particularly after Xi came to power. On the one hand, east Asia feels remarkably peaceful and safe, and then suddenly North Korea fires a missile over the Pacific, a hawkish Chinese commentator declares it’s time to take Taiwan by force or a disputed island gets surrounded by Japanese and a Chinese naval vessels. Watching Ukraine unfold with horror made me realise not to take this relatively peaceful time for granted in East Asia, as it could all go horribly wrong incredibly fast. (Great video as always mate. The ominous soundtrack alone made me cower in fear).

Let’s keep in mind, Taiwan makes most of the best chips that the world uses. Your computer or phone you are using has one of those chips, american military vehicle systems, missile systems and all other important things. Taiwan is pretty important. Edit: this comment is just highlighting a fact not pointed out in the video. I’m not saying that they are the only thing Taiwan is good for nor am I saying I don’t care about the Taiwanese. I've been to Taiwan, one day I hope I get the opportunity to live there. It's a beautiful island with a vibrant and friendly Chinese and Aboriginal culture. I've never felt more at home and safe in my life than on the island. I don't want war and I hope that cooler heads will prevail, but we will all have to wait and see.

However, if Ukraine falls, China will rightfully assume that the American Giant is asleep and will not hesitate to take Taiwan by force. Ukraine is no less important than Taiwan for it is the door between Russia and Nato. Taiwan obviously is in a good strategic location and makes semiconductors. Therefore, Taiwan is part of China, a fact recognized by the United Nations and most countries around the world. During World War II, due to Japanese aggression, China ceded Taiwan to Japan. However, due to the tenacious resistance of the Chinese people, more than 30 million people sacrificed their lives. I am a Chinese person in the US. I think given the ferocity of Ukraine’s defense and similar mindset of the Taiwanese, China would be doubly careful. Imagine how easy it was to spot the build up of Russian troops on a super long Ukrainian border, imagine how obvious the build up will be on the Fujian coast. I think a Taiwan invasion is far less likely now because of Ukraine.

Technically Taiwan (Republic of China) and mainland (People's Republic of China) are still in war status. The Chinese civil war hasn't ended. There is no cease fire agreement since 1949, with one party on the mainland and the other on the island.

Im not a hardline communist, but if it is excecuted good, I believe in it. The Yugoslav wars didnt happen, because of coummism, but because of that that brewed in the meantime, the ultra nationalist movements since WW2. The chinese army is big, but it is riddled in corruption and wouldnt function good as a team, lets not talk about the equipment.

As a foreigner residing in Taiwan, I can attest to the fact that Taiwan is such an evolved, resourceful country that no one wants it invaded with non-peaceful means. China is undoubtedly taking lessons from the Ukraine-Russian conflict and applying them to its relations with Taiwan. If there is a war, China's stakes are unquestionably higher than Russia's in the Ukraine conflict. InshaAllah, this conflicts will end in a peaceful manner.

Logically speaking I really wonder what would bring the most benefit? Is Taiwan really the goal other than just in name? Or maybe it's more domestic distraction and a need for continued economic growth that could make a war itself profitable? China is rather self-sufficient if compared to Russia. @@zakuro8532 China has been mostly following this sort of strategic ambiguity understanding (between CN, US, and TW) on the Taiwan issue for a very long time. I think in recent years the issue escalated a bit, the direct reason being the way how DPP came to power and are operating things there (highly ideologically possessed, highly anti-Chinahints, and hinting at amending the ROC constitution). But the seed has been planted way back to Li Teng-Hui's times. Right now it's actually sort of backfiring for China because left-leaning patriotic young people want to see Taiwan taken back (by force). But for the government, there is no direct benefit, or rather the benefits won't outweigh the costs, at least in the short term. As for the Taiwan government, as long as they're not recklessly optimistic (like NATO and Zelenskiy, expanding right up against the face of Putin and just thinking that it's modern 21st century nobody is daring to start a war) and know that a red line actually exists, I don't see China actually mounting an attack on Taiwan. Unless the whole world already went into utter chaos and nobody cares anymore. Which, I hate to say it but, actually seems likely depending on how NATO reacts to the Ukraine situation. That being said, if Ukraine doesn't survive this attack and the subsequent downfall of the US hegemony actually begins... For China It's gonna be either a quick and decisive battle, or a peaceful, long-term and multi-generational process of trying to bring the hearts of people on both sides of the strait back together, for a basis of reunion. The cultural ties are there, but people (on both sides) have been brainwashed ideologues for so long that unless we find a new common ground for conversations, some of the nominal "value differences" just make really huge gaps for mutual understanding.

That's not true, Ukraine was not part of NATO, hence NATO not intervening militarily in the Russian occupation. Johnny I'm gonna be honest I think you missed a HUGE part of this equation: the economic ramifications. We can argue about who would win in a military confrontation between the US and China until hell freezes over, but the economic ramifications for China if they chose to invade Taiwan tomorrow would be DISASTROUS. I'm talking full-scale collapse of their entire economy. The reason? China relies on international trade for its economy to function. It is a manufacturing hub that produces goods for the entire world. And guess who their biggest trading partner is: THE UNITED STATES! China has an enormous trade surplus with the United States (meaning we buy more from them then they do from us). If that line of trade evaporated overnight, it would absolutely decimate the Chinese economy. It would also have a huge negative impact on the United States, but certainly not to the same extent as China. The negative economic ramifications of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan alone are enough for China to table the idea for the foreseeable future. There are efforts underway in China to wean itself off of its trade reliance on the US, but that will be a slow and tedious process. You can't overlook these kinds of factors and simply skip to the military side of things when this is such a huge part of even the initial decision to retake Taiwan. I am a mainlander Chinese, and I am 40 years old. I have something to say. We were taught that Taiwan is part of China in the school, but they didn't really tell us what happened in the past 100 years, and how Taiwan was separate from us. As we grew up, and started to gather information from different sources including KZbin :), we started to understand what happened. Taiwan of course is part of China, no matter it is Communist China or Democrats China (lets call it this way) managing this land, Taiwan Island belongs to Chinese, this race of people who have been living on this planet for 5000 years. Vice versa, for those Taiwan residents, you all should know that the mainland is your land too. Just because you are not allowed to come here freely, doesn't mean that you should forget your origin. For those who don't really understand China and Taiwan, you can take South Korea and North Korea to help you understand. They used be one nation, and are supposed to be one nation as always (as a Chinese, I still hope to see the day that the Korean Peninsula will be united). Because of geopolitical conflicts including the best interests of Soviets, Chinese and Americans, they were torn apart and became two nations being run by two different parties -both are widely acknowledged including by UN. China and Taiwan is basically the same thing, the only difference is that in China the communists won the civil war. Kuoming Tang (democrats party) lost the war and they had to evacuate to Taiwan island with the Americans' help. With the soviets help, and as being one of the largest countries with its largest population, communist China won the acceptance in UN and acknowledgement by the international community while the managing parties in Taiwan never got acknowledged. As a Chinese, I hope to see the country land's unification one day, but I don't wanna see it done by war. If it would have to take a war to unify the country, I'd rather see Taiwan separate from mainland forever.

The main problem lies with the CCP and how it controls China. Over the past 70 years, Taiwan had evolved into a society that even with it's political differences, it still is a country that abides by freedom, law and equality. What China and Hong Kong is going through right now is what we had experienced 30 years ago and no one is willling to lose the very things we've fought for just to fulfill a vague Chinese national pride. If the CCP does not free China from it's grasp, I see no reason why the ROC should be considering it's a good idea to reunite with the current China. My forefathers left their families and homeland, fought and retreated to Taiwan with the ROC for the sole reason of their belief of freedom and democracy and a good number of Taiwanese also fought and sacrificed for the same reason. Too many died and sacrificed for what they believed for and it finally had developed into something here in Taiwan. If we just bowed down to the CCP now, we've pretty much lost everything that they've fought for the past 70 years for nothing. I hope you understand that some things are just way more important than a mere Chinese national pride for the people of Taiwan.

There is a major difference between Taiwan and Ukraine; Taiwan produces the most advanced chips which are used in the most advanced military tech, Ukraine produces nothing for the US. The US can not risk losing its access to the most advanced technology or it will lose its military edge. I will tell you guys one thing. Ukraine and Taiwan is not the same in terms of battlefield. Taiwan is mountainous whereas Ukraine is mostly flat. Taiwan is also an island so China needs to do an amphibious assault and it is safe to say that a full on assault on Taiwan will be much much more costly and challenging than D-Day. The Chinese government cant risk to lose the assault either because if they do, their imagine will be greatly tarnished and it may even end their government.

Please note that this is a civil war in China. There was no formal agreement or document to end the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party in China. The government of the Republic of China just retreated to Taiwan. Taiwan still belongs to China and is a province of China. This is related to the constitution of the Republic of China. description. I’m currently focusing on EU - Taiwan relations for my masters and the potential Chinese takeover is something that’s constantly in the back of everyones mind whenever discussing Taiwan. I think the Ukraine situation will be an important case study for China. China’s economy is extremely important for the communist party’s legitimacy. How long lasting the foreign sanctions on Russia are and how they impact the countries economy over time could be a very strong deterrent for the potential invasion of Taiwan. If however the west capitulates to Russia after short period because its an important gas and oil supplier then China may see an invasion of Taiwan as being worth the risk.

But we do not agree with the government, and the freedom to raise voice and disagree with our own government is very important to many of us. And you can't deny the fact that mere mentions of Taiwan internationally by public figures and brands lead to scandals, boycott, and backlash. If that's not the definition of hostility I don't know what is.

Not to mention the constant airspace violation mentioned in this video. Being constantly exposed to that, some Taiwanese citizens may become hostile even towards just average Chinese citizens. Though that is a small subset of the people. The shared language, heritage, and in some cases family means that many citizens can actually get along fine politics aside. But let's be real, Taiwan is at risk of being invaded by China, not the other way around. So what do you say to that?

Hi Johnny, I think you have missed a very important part of China-Taiwan potential war. Which is Taiwan's outlying islands Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu. (you didn't colour them in either red or blue and just skipped them) Notice how close these islands are with Mainland China. (In fact there was a battle of Kinmen in the 1958.) These islands are inhabited but fragile, while politically significant to justify Taiwan as the real China representative(ROC). Because technically Kinmen and Matsu belong to ROC's Fujian Province, symbolize the existence of ROC. So what it means is that a total war between China and Taiwan is quite impossible, but an invasion of these islands is very likely to happen. From what we have seen the international scenes have become, it might just happen within months. This partial, controllable war could be used as a way to force for “negotiation” and advocates the nationalism in the Mainland. It is completely feasible, effortless, and would be a huge political success for China. A great way to crush Taiwanese's confidence on trying to protect their own sovereignty, without causing much casualties and limited chance for US to intervene. (Just see how weak the Brandon Administration is right now) After that, China could just make these islands as another Special Administrative Region and continue to do its propaganda. And Taiwan has no chance to take them back too because of how Pro-Beijing the government and citizens are in there. (You can see the similarities between Eastern Ukraine) That's just my very own opinion and hope you could see this comment!

The western world especially US sacrificed it to please the Communist China, so to pull China further away from USSR's influence when their relationship worsened. Because at that time, USSR, obviously, is considered to be the greatest threat to the West. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Also, China had so much economic potential so building a better relationship with China is way more important than keeping a formal diplomatic relation with the corrupted, dictatorial Chiang's regime. Yes, Taiwan at that time was under an era called White Terror, the political repression is just as horrible as China nowadays. Btw, seeing people complaining how useless UN is, just see how Taiwan was kicked out from UN in 1971 and you would understand that this so called international organization for peace is just another League of Nations.

I'm interested in the fallout, and I cant seem to find much on that. A) China takes Taiwan with ths chip production relatively intact. What happens in the rest of the world? B) TSMC is destroy either by the fighting or as a deliberate sabotage. What happens to the rest of the world? Like, dont get me wrong, war sucks and it'd be bad for Taiwan if China invades, but we've seen global war in the relatively recent past. Most foreigners don't know that not only the Chinese constitution has Taiwan as part of their territory, but also the Taiwanese constitution has the entire mainland China as part of their territory. So by the constitutions of both regimes, there is only one territory that includes both mainland China and Taiwan.
