That small group of extremists have caused trouble in the XinJiang region in the past decade, who basically whip out knives to slaughter people that don't believe in their version of the religion. As a person who don't believe in their version of the religion (like the majority of the Chinese population and even the majority of the Chinese Muslims who believe in other versions of the religion), I don't see anything wrong with re-educating them to not kill other people. Also, as a female myself, I think it is important for all women to realize that they are not born to be belongings/offspring-production machines for men, and I don't find anything wrong with the Chinese government educating those women about this.

What's interesting to me is that he doesn't discuss the total absence of private land ownership in China, the communal nature of all agricultural land, or the dominance of SOEs in their economy. Also no discussion of the specific state programs that have been utilised to directly lift these predominately rural communities located in-land out of poverty, or the involvement of some 90 million people from the CPC. He instead attributes these achievements to a vaguely defined "shareholder capitalism". Moreover, he also dismisses the communist economic system out of hand with no explanation or justification. Also a bit misleading to use the percentile graph to portray the lowest income groups as "winners". 75% growth in a $1 a day income is just $1.75. That's incomparable with 300% of the several billion dollars held by 1%ers. The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of all the wealth produced in the past 30 years has been stolen from the world's workers, the people that actually produced it. Their labour produces all this surplus value and it has been siphoned by the 1%. This video is a thinly veiled propaganda piece for the "merits" of capitalism by attributing the state achievements of a socialist country to a global mode of production that doesn't function in China in any way like it does in the west.

When the industrialized West moved its production and factories to China, it also moved the energy requirements, CO2 emissions, industrial waste and other industrial pollutions. So these China increases in CO2 emissions is really the result of moving factories from one country to another.

I just think it's weird how China's successes are "because of capitalism" and their failures are "because of communism." The industrialization that led to disastrous effects in the earlier modern history of the USSR or China also led to disastrous effects in the US and Europe when it was first implemented. The fall of communism practically destroyed Russia while the retention of communism propelled China. I'm not even saying this as an advocate of China's policies. Of course their per capita is lower, they have over a billion people, half of which is still extremely poor and a quarter, roughly a little less than the entire US population live below the poverty line. As the CCP continue to build coal plants and these people gain electricity and wealth their per capita will rise sharply. And they should become a wealthy country, but as that happens their emissions will only go up and the planet will continue to get worse. Hopefully they switch to nuclear or nat gas or renewable but we'll see. India will go through something similar as well. Its a really complicated issue.

Capitalism is good actually. It is the only system that works and creates wealth and prosperity. This is absolutely an ad, it tries to paint Walmart, JP Morgan, and Apple as socially and environmentally conscious businesses when they aren't. Probably the worst examples: Walmart paying low wages so that employees only continue to shop at Walmart, while the Walton Family is one of the richest families on the planet. Apple restricting or refusing third-party repair because it will mean people are less inclined to buy new devices if their old devices continue to function with a low-cost repair. The second graph is misleading since China has a population that is 5x of the US. Every developed country went through the phase that the economy growth consumes the environment. China and other Asian countries are experiencing that process and they were much more considerate comparing to western countries while they were at the same stage.

This man isn't the first to use the term stakeholder capitalism, I've experienced it tossed around before. The B corporations, if you've heard of them, are a group of corporations who say that they will do x or y to midigate climate change. They held a talk at a University I live near and they used the term to describe themselves aswell. The fact of the matter is, stakeholder capitalism is certainly not socialism. those who use the term make sure to make that distinction. They support free markets, private industry, and liberal democracy. They simply believe that private industries should look at people's needs a bit more. Socialism on the other hand, according to Marx, Engels, Lenin, etc, wishes for the working class to stage revolution against capitalism. So that after this revolution they may instate a dictatorship of the proletariat, which is a form of governance in which the interests of the working class are furthered against the interests of private industry. The abolition of the market, of private property, and liberal democracy (they favor a socialist republic model) is the end goal. As you can see, they are very different things! And both the learned supporters of stakeholder capitalism, the people who Invented the term in the first place, and socialists agree that they are distinct ideas! Marx analyzed how capitalism produces commodities and found that the people who actually create value are poorly treated and ripped off. He said capitalism is good at generating wealth but distributes it highly inequality. Socialism is the solution to that distribution problem. Socialism simply says that workers should democratically own thier workplaces and thus you won't have someone in the middle taking all the profits that everyone helped to produced. The profits will be evenly distributed and you won't have a few people in society with all the power.

This video lacks of depth. It does barely touch the surface of its title: how China becomes so powerful. Everything discussed in this video was more or less about western capitalism. If it is so simple, then every nation on earth can easily adopt China's success. However, the uniqueness of Chinese growth is way beyond just 'western capitalism'. It is much deep and sophisticated and often, with great wisdom. Unfortunately people like to simplify the analysis.

Yeah but China still has some type of capitalism, while Marx denied capitalism, that's why the USSR suffered a lot after it spend too much on the military. If China continued to be isolationist, self-reliant country, it's economy would be in top10 but not in top5. Huawei, ByteDance, Xiaomi etc. are private companies with some involvement of government but for the most part, China is thriving due to a modified capitalism.

@@simulify8726 Marx never "denied" capitalism. the theory goes, a capitalist society grows unevenly rich, the rich will then exploit the poor, the workers will inevitably rise up and form a socialist government which will later develop into a true communist utopia. notice how it starts with capitalism, it was always a step in the process per his theory. He had though the workers would rise up first in britain and the us where society is industrialized and rich people are getting richer, to everyone's surprise russia which was far less industrialized rose up and became communist.

Capitalism is good actually. It is the only system that works and creates wealth and prosperity. Socialism has brought nothing, but poverty, totalitarianism and consequential social regression (liberal democracies such as Sweden or New Zealand are much more feminist and pro-LGBT than Cuba or North Korea). It is painfully clear that communism failed and failed miserably, under Mao China was plagued by constant food shortages and repressions, under Deng, which liberalized the economy and turned it into a market-based system, China has finally started to grow and the constant famines and food-shortages stopped. Ask any economics professor and they'll tell you that communism just does not work and that its track record is nothing but failures. The calculus in your head seems to be, criticism of World Economic Forum is synonymous with being a rabid Commie. Worse, you've apparently somehow concluded from my original, one sentence long post, that I've already rejected the approach of liberal democracies enroute to my staunch pro-Commie stance. To be clear - I'm well versed in the problems of Communism. I've read enough literature to know its history (including The Gulag Archipelago and biographies of Stalin & Trotsky). My issues with Johnny teaming up with the World Economic Forum are: (1) He's accepting corporate largesse and running a cynical advertisement for big business, aimed at propagandising to younger people, a generation whose life chances have been utterly degraded by neoliberalism and corporatisim (low wages, massive student debt, ridiculous property prices) (2) He'd previously positioned himself as an independent minded journalist, only to sell out and become a corporate mouthpiece. I'm not interested in listening to corporate PR claptrap paid for by the representatives of Apple and Coke. Very confusing video. Doesn't provide much detail on the policies that led to China's economic rise, other than saying it allowed some form of capitalism. India has had capitalism much longer than China, so why is its growth rate so comparatively small? Is there something different about Chinese-style capitalism balanced with socialism? Also transitions to "stakeholder capitalism", but doesn't say whether China is or isn't practicing stakeholder capitalism. This is made harder to figure out because the video gives an income growth chart for the world but doesn't follow up with a version restricted to China, and it doesn't show a pollution per capita comparison of China vs. the US to give a fair comparison. Also please look up how to pronounce Deng Xiaoping. It is very surprising and disappointing how many professional reporters never take the time to look up how to pronounce the names of the leaders of China, most populated country with the 2nd largest economy in the world, and instead decide to make up their own pronunciations. It is very embarrassing and distracting to listen to these made-up pronunciations in otherwise serious reporting, and to be honest it sounds very ignorant, especially when this is so easy to fix. Please don't be one of those people!

Where did you read that India was capitalist before china china opened up its market in 1978 and india in 1991. Even india is still more socialist than capitalist do you know 75% of Indian banks are owned by Indian government many large manufacturing companies in india are government owned like SAIL,BEL,BHEL and numerous others. Also india according to it's economic prosperity has the largest social welfare spending in percentage of GDP than any other country in history at the economic level. India's government is cash strapped it's 23% of it's budget on interest payment on it's loan yet indian government provides free health insurance to the poorest 500 million. Education in Indian government schools are free with the perk of free lunch to every children. I myself studied in a government sponsored college which is not owned by the government but subsidised by the government which cost only 500 dollars a year fees for computer science master's degree. So I think you must research at first properly and then comment.
