I do have to say that would make since because you would be surrounded on three sides with America. But that wouldn’t be that big of a problem because the U.S. is good friend with Canda. So America won’t invade Canda for that oil because that would get a big no no from the U.N. and N.A.T.O.

if the ice on greenland melted, it would likely disrupt the warm water flow from north america to europe, which is partly why europe is so warm desipte its high latitude. if this flow is disrupted then lots of europe would become an icy tundra just like northern canada, completely destroying most of the agriculture in those regions. melting greenland might yield high gains in oil and metals, but it might also destroy europe. on the other hand, if global warming continues, maybe it would counteract this and it wouldn't matter anyways.

It's been close to 2 decades since I worked as a business economist, but my guess is that $1.1 trillion for Greenland would be the bargain of the 21st century. I'd go $2 trillion in a heartbeat, not for the least of which reasons is its strategic location. The natural resources that it offers would simply sweeten the deal.
@benchild3721

Great video... as fellow Geographer, just want to say be mindful of projections potentially distorting the exaggerated size of Greenland (when using a Mercator system). It is a big island, the biggest but not as nearly as big as depicted on video and most widely used maps. Side Note: Just realised that I added nothing towards the actual context of video (i.e. ‘purchase of’ and not just about size)... But hey... Geographer to Geographer, I do enjoy some of your videos. Lol, I like most. Very well researched and it does come across that you’re a subject-matter-expert. One thing though, I do pick somethings that require correction/s on a few videos, particularly when Africa (or part of Africa) is the subject. Lastly... overall great videos, most of the content are things I generally find interesting. Keep up the good work. Last last lastly, if you happen to see this comment, maybe there could be synergy 🤷🏾‍♂️ as a Professional GIS Practitioner (South Africa), visualising maps is my bread and butter. Keep well!

Comments like these should be seen more because it is very true. When people show us a map of the world as kids. We believe that IS the true size of the world While russia looks enormous in the map. It's just Exaggerated, while it is true it is indeed the biggest country in size. In reality, it's barely bigger than china. When i saw a map of the true sizes of countries. It completely changed my perspective of the world. This is why maps and espesically a map of the world are very important. Side note: i am also a geographer

@@blade1425 I agree wholeheartedly but, not to burst your bubble... barely? Russia is almost TWO China's in terms of size (17.1M km2 - 9.59M km2) . In fact the Asian part of Russia standalone is still bigger than every country on earth (around 12.8M km2) even if the US bought Greenland (12M km2). To the naked eye though it might look different, I still find it hard to believe that the UK is less than half the size of France.

Denmark would be crazy to sell it. The importance of it goes up as the effects of climate change worsen. Lets assume we don't harvest the oil because of that though. That still leaves open the rare earth elementals we need and ones needed for storage batteries to zero out emissions from vehicles. Going even further, should all the surface ice melt, Denmark would need the now uncovered land mass in Greenland where it could migrate its population to as Denmark itself would be underwater. It is just a much better long term investment to hold onto it.

Claim: NATO tried to «drag» Ukraine into the Alliance Fact: When the administrations of President Kuchma and President Yushchenko made clear their aspiration to NATO membership, the Alliance worked with them to encourage the reforms which would be needed to make that aspiration a reality. When the administration of President Yanukovych opted for a non-bloc status, NATO respected that decision and continued to work with Ukraine on reforms, at the government’s request. NATO respects the right of every country to choose its own security arrangements. In fact, Article 13 of the Washington Treaty specifically gives Allies the right to leave. Over the past 65 years, 28 countries have chosen freely, and in accordance with their domestic democratic processes, to join NATO. Not one has asked to leave. This is their sovereign choice. Let’s look at Ukraine’s disgraced former president, the legitimately elected Victor Yanukovych. After he fled to Russia the idea that he remained the legitimate head of state, and therefore the manner in which he was replaced was automatically illegitimate, was commonplace. This line of thinking was heavily promulgated by his new host country for reasons that are self-evident. But was it right, or even logical, to claim this? The legitimacy of the Yanukovych regime indeed began with a fair election, albeit an election in which the Ukrainian people had no good choices. But could that legitimacy go on unquestioned despite the blatant grand scale theft of state resources? No. Of course it could not. Common hooligans and thugs were brought to Kyiv by the Yanukovych authorities (first recorded on Nov. 29, 2013 when the revolution was just a few days old) to terrorize the residents of the capital. This act was completely in contradiction to Article 3 of the constitution that Yanukovych was elected to uphold. It was right to question Yanukovych’s legitimacy after this. Can the legitimacy of a ruling authority survive past the blatantly illegal adoption of laws designed to end democracy and create a dictatorship? No. Of course it cannot. Yet, this is what the Yanukovych controlled Party of Regions attempted to do on Jan. 16, 2014. Later analysis of images taken in parliament that while 235 MPs were declared to have voted for these “dictatorship” laws, only about half of this number of MPs were actually in the session hall when the vote was taken (by a show of hands - also illegal.) After such clearly anti-democratic and dishonest actions, can anyone consider that authority to be legitimate? The actions were a breach of Article 5 of Ukraine’s constitution - something that Yanukovych was under oath to protect and uphold. But he failed to keep his word. There were more violations of the constitution by Yanukovych, its supposed protector. Article 27 of Ukraine’s constitution says that “Every person shall have the inalienable right to life. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of life.” Yet Yuri Verbitsky, a 42 year old geologist from Lviv, was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by forces belonging to the Yanukovych regime between Jan. 22 and Jan. 25 of 2014. That Yanukovych had already lost any legitimacy by this point should be beyond question. Later, of course, came the deaths of many more people on Jan. 18 and then Jan. 20, after which Yanukovych fled to Russia, insisting his authority and position were still legitimate. Define legitimate. The idea that legitimacy carries on from appointment without further question is a complete fallacy. It is something that we should refuse to accept. An elected leader most certainly can lose their legitimacy through illegal and/or unconstitutional, actions. The most recent public attempt at increasing the fog blurring the distinction between legitimately elected and legitimate comes from Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. Bottom line, they are not the same, although it is easy to see why Russia’s ruling clan would seek to pretend that they are.

Greenland has huge rare earth element deposits, probably more valuable than oil or gas at this point for consumer and military tech. China controls 98% of REE market and for like 20 years western countries have been talking about needing their own supply. I’d guess Greenland is worth way more than 1.1 trillion and probably closer to 10 or even 20 trillion just in undiscovered/projected REE deposits and Denmark knows that.

Local from St. Croix, USVI here, the 25 mjlljkn was all in gold and I may have a reason that comes from the Danish people and not their Gov't about selling islands. "Never again" is what I've heard time and time again, tourists fly down and lament the fact it is no longer the DWI. Beauty, history, resources, defense capabilities, tourism and vacations to your country's gem in the sun all gone for gold. Don't know who would repeat that type of deal.
@alabamaal225
@alabamaal225 Жыл бұрын
What those visiting Danes forget is that the Danish government had been trying to sell the Danish West Indies (DWI) from the 1850s onward. The DWI had been a drain on the Danish economy since the Danish slaves were emancipated in 1848; the loss of this cheap labor made the agricultural estates unprofitable, leading to an economic collapse in the DWI. Though the Danes shopped the islands to numerous countries, no major power was much interested in paying for a collection of backwater islands. This lack of interest changed when the Panama Canal was nearing completion. The most direct shipping routes between the Panama Canal and European ports passed very close to the Danish West Indies, suddenly making the DWI strategically important; it was feared that this potential bottleneck could be blockaded by a hostile force. Prior to the start of World War I, Germany began to express an interest in the islands; needless to say, German acquisition of the islands was unacceptable to Britain, France, and the United States. The start of WWI forced the issue, leading the U.S. to purchase the DWI for $25 million. The U.S. officially took possession of the islands on March 31, 1917, only six days before the U.S. formally declared war on Germany.

The fact that Denmark is an ally will certainly benefit the U.S. by making it easier for Americans to invest there, but the tax revenue is going to Denmark, not America. The real money is in the "vig," as they say. Now, if Denmark requires assistance from the American military for air defense, naval defense and running diplomatic interference, there may be some room for negotiation.

Denmark doesnt give a shit about those things and the danish government will happily break their own constitution if it pleases their overlord (as it has done several times in the past). The proposal is just ridiculous since Denmark would be selling off its own citizens. Its why Denmark sold the Virgin Islands 100 years ago - they didnt want a bunch of ex slaves becoming danish citizens.

The US accidentally dropped two (I think it was) nukes through some ice into a lake or something back during the Cold War by accident. It required the forced relocation of at least one village. Forced relocations, poverty and second rate citizenship is what the Greenlanders can look forward to if they become American, just like it happened in Guam, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands. At least Denmark is trying to right historic wrongs done to the Greenlandic people, and we (the Faroese, which I am, and the Greenlanders) are considered Danish citizens on the same level as Danes in Denmark.

Why not get a cooperative agreement with denmark? Buy half of it now and they get a percentage of future minerals ,oil etc or the same percentage of the money made from it. We could also manage all the natural resources and give them half of profit as royalties. That way they could still pay off their national debt now.

@@josephsaafan7838 They have not declared independence yet. Until you make a lawful declaration (which means your independence declaration has been approved by your parent state), you are not a technically independent country.
