Nice work. There are so many unscrupulous people and companies. Most of them unfortunately are offshore which makes it more difficult to settle any issues.

Ebikes are still rare in Barnsley, S. Yorkshire UK - I love people looking at my mtb, newly bought for £350, bbs02b 750w (locked to UK road legal speed of 15.5 mph 🤔) nipping around with ease and decent torque 👍👍👍😂😂😂 and now I’m Ubering and loving it woohoo....

That's the first step, if it passes that stage you need to actually test the capacity with a meter of some sort, The covers on the cells can be faked and also seconds can be used so even though they might be genuine cells the actual capacity and ability to deliver power will be less. Brand new good quality cells are expensive and building a quality pack from them will cost more than just buying the genuine cells so be aware of that. For my cheap DIY builds I took a chance on liitokala packs, they were cheap but performed as I expected at around 16ah for a pack parked as 20ah, I rarely use more than 50% of the pack so it's no problem

Awesome video series. I bought 2 hailong batteries with brackets. They were listed as 36v 10.4 li-ion samsung. Thus only cheap samsung 2600mah cells inside. Im limited to 250 watt and 25kmph so very useful batteries. For only 160 dollar shipped within 5 days. I use 2 in parallel when i want to ride 80-100km

Nicely done video mate. As a side note. For those with a bit more experience on batteries I'd recommend use 6s 22000MAH LIPO battery blocks connected in series or a combination of series/parallel. They provide a lot of amps power and are cheap. Best brands of lipo are Gens ace tattu, Zdf, turnigy, zippy, hobbyking. 12s blocks are also sold. I use 18s. 3x6s blocks in series.

I ditched all the 18650 cells in my battery builds. I only stick to the samsung 21700 48X or 50G models, they have high capacity, low voltage sag and especially long lifespan (1500-3000 cycles possible with slightly reduced voltage range of 3.0-4.15V). they're hard to get though... not many suppliers carry these models

I feel like the outdoor power equipment batteries should be looked at as a first “second” choice (behind premium dedicated ebike packs) as an alternative to going with generic cells and batteries. I know they have their adapter and mounting issues, but if some of that can be standardized, then using reputable OPE batteries from Ego, Toro, Ryobi, Greenworks, etc, that can be quickly pulled off and put on a rapid charger, in the voltage range of the motor, you have opened up many price, performance and quality aspects that don’t seem to exist. The choice of premium or generic, from battery names no one has heard of, with chargers that don’t actively cool the battery, might need to be stirred up by more dedicated builds from guys like Johnny using Ego or Toro or Stihl or whatever brand of good tested, with warranty, batteries you can buy at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace or Amazon etc.

Maybe a battery test is needed to determine low capacity cells or worn out ones. You will need a power resistor as a load, and an amp meter. Fully charge up the battery. If the battery is say 48v and 13Ah, then in theory , 13 amps can be drawn for 1 hour. To be safe, just draw say 1 amp for 13 hours, or 2 amps for 6.5 hours. Total Time to draw current = Ah / amps Power Resistor = 48/amps. The wattage of the power resistor should be: watts = 48v x amps , or greater in watt ability. At the end of the time, the current meter should still indicate about the same starting current, and you may continue the test or not, but perhaps no more when the battery is say 50% of its voltage.

@@JohnnyNerdOut The amp meter can be had on a cheap Harborfreight multimeter. 100w power resistors might not be too expensive. Also aligator wires and clips for connections, that can handle say 2 amps. Resistors can also be placed in series to sum to a larger resistor, but they all need to be able to handle the current and power through it.

@@JohnnyNerdOut A simple kill-a-watt meter will kind of give you an idea. The total power to take an empty battery (where your ebike shuts down) to fully charged gives an idea if the battery is way off or close to what the spec claims.

@tau856

@@scotth5503 That is correct and we can certainly factor that in. From my years of switching power circuit design experience, I can easily say that most, if not all the chargers with switching circuit should achieve 9x% efficiency with the switching and MOSFET technologies nowadays. I have tested some chargers previously and they even had over 95%, especially during charging at the rated output. Again, we are just getting an idea if we got what we paid for, this idea is simple and close enough.

Yah, the good cells aren't really made in China. This means the price per cell for your neighbor, or the guy in China are going to be the same in terms of wholesale price. So your local manufacturer can make a battery for about the same price as the place in China if it's made from quality cells.

*YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DO MATH WHEN YOURE BUYING A BATTERY. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOURE BUYING A 52V 17AH BATTERY REGARDLESS WHAT BRAND, IF THE SELLER SAYS EACH CELL IS RATED 2500mAH, THEN THE BATTERY SHOULD BE 14S7P. THAT MEANS 14 X 3.7V = 52V AND 2.5AH X 7 IS AROUND 17AH. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CELLS THEN IS 14 X 7 = 98. YOU DONT NEED TO TAKE APART THE BATTERY IF YOU DID THE MATH BEFORE YOU BUY*
