Excellent video! Two years ago I converted my venerable old Trek Multitrak 700 bike to electric power, in this case by installing a 250 watt front drive wheel. This resulted in an excellent, easy-to-ride E-bike which fits me just fine, and has enough power assist to keep me riding almost daily. I'm 71 years old these days, so the electical assist is greatly appreciated by my knees and hips!
@johnnybeanz12963 жыл бұрын
I had that bike a long time ago. How difficult was the conversion? Did you do it yourself? Thanks
@snogcel13 жыл бұрын
@@johnnybeanz1296 Very easy job indeed! Just swap the original front wheel for the new driven wheel, snake the wiring around the frame as needed, and find a place for the battery pack to live. The kit even includes plastic cable ties for strapping the wiring in place. The throttle button is a little cheezy, but that's no big deal.

Sir, I'm 76 and have same bike. Commuted more than 5,000 miles last year and am on the road again thanks to another vehicular failure. Would you mind sharing information about your conversion experience and other tips, please? Thanks.
@snogcel12 жыл бұрын
@@robinbanks9691 In my estimation it's more trouble to replace the tires and tubes on your conventional bike than it is to install the E-bike conversion kit. I went with a Hilltopper 250 watt kit, which cruises at about 15 mph on level ground. I'm lazy, so I usually let the battery propel me on level ground, pedaling when a hill starts to slow me to around 10mph or so. I bought a second battery pack on Ebay, but since the connectors didn't match my kit I combined the batteries of both packs into a new, double capacity pack which will probably carry me 30 miles or so. I've never gone far enough to find out when it dies! It's been 4 or 5 years now and I still enjoy riding, and it so far shows no signs of dying! Happy cycling!

You're right- I did this in 2004 because of a bad knee. I put a 36v front hub on my bicycle and a batt-pak of 36v Ni-Cads. That thing gave me smooth riding up hills and into headwinds. Side benefit is that the easier pedaling strengthened my knee rather than hurt it. These days, I've upgraded to a 48v assist [highly recommended]. I can ride 50 mi. easy- it's a real workout, but without the sweat.

Two of my three ebikes are regular bikes I converted and I'm perfectly happy with both of them. The only reason I bought the third one as a factory built is because it was a folding fat tire full suspension bike (hard to find one that isn't already an ebike) and I got a really good price on it. Hub motors work perfectly fine for me, but I don't live in a mountainous area. One day, with the bike loaded with groceries, it threw the chain halfway home. The bike was too top heavy for the kickstand to hold it long enough for me to put the chain back on, so I just used the throttle and motor and got home no problem. Can't do that with a mid drive. My advice is, unless you have Real Hills to deal with, save money and get a hub motor kit.

When I was 70 my local bike shop guy had me try an e-bike in the parking lot. I told him that if I was still bicycling aboveground when I got to 80, I'd want one. I'm not there yet, but I think about it when riding into a strong wind. I usually plan my rides to go with the wind. On multi-day tours I try to average about 50 miles a day, and tend to max out at around 80 these days, which is kind of pathetic compared to what I was doing 25 years ago, but that's the way it is. When the wind is strongly against me I tend to take a rest day, which is an annoying limiting factor. I've always figured I'd do a conversion when I get an ebike, because that way I will know the bicycle will be rideable even when I run out of battery. At least that's the way I'm hoping it would work. Have you done any videos about that aspect of e-bikes?

As a keen road rider I resisted the idea of any kind of assist for as long as possible, but having recently reached the age of ninety, decided that something had to be done about the way al the hills around where I live seemed to have mysteriously been increasing in length and severity. Not being in a position to afford one of the real e-road bikes (Ribble, Orbea and the like), and disliking the appearance, and weight, of most of the e-bikes out there, I did some research. Although not apparently well known, I discovered that a good way to economically convert the bike, while maintaining the road bike appearance and not adding much weight, was to go for a friction drive kit. The one I purchased was a simple kit which was easy to fit and provides it's drive through the rear wheel. The whole thing is very unobtrusive and the all up weight of the bike and kit is only 13.5 kg, which is about the same weight as something like the Ribble AGR SLe, at about a sixth of the price. Obviously it is not as refined as a hub motor system, but it has a 250 watt motor which does the same job pretty well - the hill assist is very good, in fact. Regarding range, I always find the battery range people quote a bit problematic, e.g. someone will claim, say, an 80 mile range on a battery, when actually they mean they did an 80 mile ride with the power off a lot of the time. I tested this kit with a ride on continuous power on mixed terrain, and found that the manufacturer's claim of 25m/40k was pretty well bang on - quite adequate for a decent ride with selective use of the power. For example, I recently did a 50k ride and had 50% battery left at the end. I haven't seen friction drive kits recommended much but I definitely think they are an option worth looking at.

Your video is so apt. I had that Giant XTC4.5 in my garage and wasn't using it because I hated steep hills. I did buy an ebike from a large outdoor store, but when it arrived it was evident it had been returned before. It was a 250W rear hub motor and cost £899. I sent it back and started looking at ebike kits. Almost bought the Yose 350W rear hub kit, but they stopped sending to the U.K. due to the pandemic. I then started watching videos on the Bafang mid drive kit and thought that's the kit for me. I did think it was expensive at £600 including the battery as the bike would only be worth around £150-£200 used. I also had to buy an adjustable stem to make the bars more upright as I was getting pain in my lower back. The bike now fits like that fitted suit and I'm now using it at least 3 times per week. 👍

I gained everything as the old bike was just lying in the garage doing nothing. I had bought it some 14 years ago. The brand new Decathlon bike only had a 250W hub motor also. I started out with exactly this in mind, but up here in Canada it was going to cost me $1000 or more to electrify my 10 year old hybrid, which I had doubts would last long with all the extra weight and torque. I ended up buying a premade ebike that had all the components I believe would hold up to the punishment (in fact it's overbuilt for my needs) and only cost a few hundred more after I sold my old bike. It's not exactly what I would want, because that would be prohibitively expensive, but has warranty and tangible value.

Bonjour du Québec. I'm doing this now, building my own. Yup... the budget is about what you say. I see your point about the warranty but... how well will you be served in the end? Will they really honour the warranty the way you would hope? I was offered a bike worth 5000 with the added bonus of getting 15% off for accessories. Ugh! I don't know, I couldn't see any way this was a good deal for me. That's when I decided to build my own. For resale value... my bicycles are always of the sub 400 CAD category. I donate them to Cuba after three years (riding for a few weeks and leaving it there). (Next time I go, I'll bring my bicycle with parts and easily find people to fix it up.)

One thing not mentioned is with home builds if you want to try another style of bike find a used platform and move the kit over. If on a mountain bike and you want a cruiser or vintage or step through etc find a used bike and go for it. With the kits we have a diverse range of bikes including a vintage steel frame, a step through, a hybrid and mountain bikes. I am looking for a cruiser to move my kit to. If I find another step through I will set it up for my daughter.

JohnnyNerd out speaks truth. Have built a couple of these with donor bikes I already had, and helped a couple friends do the same. The Bafang system is great. Plug and play build only takes an hour or two once you become familiar through KZbin videos. Almost magical transformation. (I've built BBS-02's onto 26" MTB's. 26" donor bikes are plentiful, and both the donor bikes and parts are cheap.). Once you have the tools and experience from the build, you also have the tools to maintain the system.

I watched a show on BBC about commuting by bike vs car. The traffic was so bad, that a 4 mile drive took 30 minutes, and these small towns in England have trails for bicycles. So the people who were willing to take the challenge made it to work in less time, and lost weight in the process. That was just using a standard bicycle! Imagine how much more efficient it would be with a motor attached.

A few years back, prior to watching any of your great KZbin videos, I concluded that I wanted to convert a regular "city commuter" bike into an ebike. I found the bike I wanted at a major retailer, then went to a local ebike shop and asked if they could convert it. They did so, adding a Bafang 500w mid-drive motor (my choice didn't need more power), a 14.5AH, 36v battery, and at my request, swapped out the rear 3-speed hub with a Shimano Alfine 8-speed. They left most of the rest of the bike stock...as bought from the retailer. The only disappointment was they couldn't get the Bafang motor lined up with the belt drive and ended up replacing the belt with a chain (bummer). But all of that said, the result is a lighter, fast (28 mph), less expensive ebike that I've ridden for a few years now. I commute (not daily, but frequently) about 9 miles each way. The bike is a dream. The only thing done to the bike in 4 years is normal maintenance. So I strongly agree with your advice to build instead of buy. Thanks for the great videos.

The problem these days is many shops do not have bikes of any kind to sell, unless you are willing to part with more money than you imagined or anticipated. One caveat to converting an older bike: some rim brakes are not very good. So while in theory any bike can be converted into an e-bike and go fast, stopping is kind of important too. Basically speaking, if the old bike came from a department store and/or has a one-piece crank, it is not a good candidate for a conversion.

I have a Giant as well .. great bike and 27lb. I use it mostly for single track riding.. having disk brakes is a must imo. Prefer the mid drive .. just get rid of the front derailleur, switch to a more suitable chainring as 5 gears are really all that is needed.

Not everyone is a handy-man and not everyone has the time anyway. Plus, in the UK (you're in the USA where things/rules are different) converting your bike means no one else will touch it and it's probably illegal - risking being pulled over by the Police and having your bike seized and you getting arrested.

I'm really glad KZbin stuck this video in my recommendations. You have another subscriber now. I have a hub-drive longtail e-bike that I bought about a year or so ago; won't say the name, but you'd recognize it. On one hand, it's the single smartest vehicle purchase I've ever made; on another hand, I _have_ been thinking about upgrading. I thought I'd have to spend 3 or 4 times the price to get a good mid-drive, but ... Hmmm. You've really got me thinking. Given the right selection of pieces, I'm fairly confident that I could pull off a DIY conversion. Don't know whether my existing hub-drive bike is a good candidate for it, but I've got a decent step-through city bike sitting around ... So yeah. Digging your channel, and now I'm checking out your web site. Thanks!

Johnny, just wanted to say how much I appreciate your channel. Some channels out there are just there to promote a product or people who want to get the most followers so they can make a living off their subscribers. Nothing wrong with making a living if you have something to offer though! Anyways, I've learned a lot from your channel. Thank you.

My cluster goes up to 46 teeth in back and with 36 up front, I should go with 750 watts. A session with you would probably help my shopping. I tend to be believe it would at least pay for itself, and perhaps even more. Still some time to go, but I have a lot in the mix already for it, so in due time, I will drive it down the pike. I may change my philosophy between now and then, and do the 1000 watt, but maybe not. I just subscribed so I got your connection.

I converted my Terratrike Rover using a 500W BBS02 kit back in 2014 (em3ev kit). I used it to commute back and forth to work for 7 years. Still running fine. I have been riding my Bafang BBS02 conversion for 4 back tires, 1 cassette, 1 chain, one back wheel (ripped the spokes out of it) and 1 battery pack. I like it, but for those out there that can't even fix a flat tire you might have to buy one from a local bike shop. Keep them going requires some fiddling. Total maintenance cost have been about $100 a year. (Include battery pack replacement.)

I very recently converted a $174 walmart bike into a 500 Watt front hub with a 48V17.5Ah battery, for a total of around $1200. The best part is that it's actually running closer to 900W, no mods, no overheating, etcetera. And the thing is lasting a very solid amount of time. In fact, I've actually sold my friend on buying it off of me for parts + assembly, and I'm going to use that money to buy another bike with 29'er wheels and run a 750 or 1000W Bafang BBS02B or BBSHD kit on it. I'm happy with the result of the overdriven 500W hub, but I need that extra kick because I want to keep up with traffic and not have people pulling out hair behind me because they couldn't be bothered to respect or read up on bike laws.

@iamrocketray3 жыл бұрын
They Don't sell the Bosch motor for DIY, its manufactures only, Its not ideal anyway because you can't use any other make of battery and Bosch batteries are £650, ridiculous! but its what's called a closed system, even the controllers are only Bosch. Its designed that way to tie you into them.

converted Walmart bikes with hub motors are best way to get a budget ebike that can hit 30mph
@lorimcquinn39663 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Converting a existing bike sounds great in regards to saving money although I do have reservations. Are the components heavy enough to withstand the power and pounding of streets at 20+ mph? Wheels, tires, spokes, tubes, bearings, brakes, general frame integrity, etc. Shouldn't all these items be exchanged for items designed to withstand the rigors of motorized city commuting? If you use the bike for year round commuting, wouldn't a belt and internal hub be a must in wet, snowy conditions? Surely a converted bike would require components designed with a 50% increase in strength.
@JohnnyNerdOut3 жыл бұрын
I can understand your concerns but that has not been my experience. Most any decent quality bike can handle the extra strain of a motor. If you ride it crazy hard all the time, yes you could damage the softer bike parts like chains etc

I went out looking for a E bike and talked to friends who paid thousands for the ones they had. After spending a few months deciding I finally decided to get a mountain bike and convert it myself. I purchased a mountain bike for £300 then purchased a 250w kit with a 18v battery as this is the highest I can legally go in the UK. It took me a few hours to hook it all up with fairly easy installation. All together I spent £550 and I am well pleased. I have gone out riding with my friends who have expensive bikes and I always out preform them on all surfaces. If my bike gets stolen or robed from me which happens a lot here in the UK, it will be a £550 loss not a few thousand loss. I have installed a tracker inside my frame to help me find it if it does grow legs. I would not trade my kit E bike for a £5.000.00 E bike.

I have a mid 80s mountain bike. Pre suspension pre indexed shifting. Johnny has sold me on the mid-drive. Just worried about brakes n shifting. What are the issues if any with the friction shifters and center pull brakes? How do I determine number of teeth on front gear? Or for a newbee is it more about: I should use the gear I normally use, or because there is more weight I should gear down a bit? My intended purpose is road use

My biggest problem , what bike to convert, I have 4. I am leaning toward the one that only has a 2 speed chain ring. It is a basic mountain bike with a 6 gear cassette. My main off road bike is just too much fun to ride to mess with. My other 2 are my road bikes. 1 the tradition 70s 10-speed, I have had since 1974, the other is mountain style and has great gearing but no shocks,.

mid drive motors transfer power through a chain, which causes losses of power and puts more strain on the chain, while hub motors are built directly into the wheel, which makes the power transfer more efficient, right?

I converted my old Raleigh with a 1500 watt hub motor and a 52 volt 20 amp hr triangle battery last fall. Its quite fast! Its also the most fun I have had in a very long time! Any reasonably handy person should be able to do the conversion. What I would really like is a full suspension, fat tire bike. From what I've seen its not easy to find one with enough space in the triangle for a battery.

Most BBSHD are 750W(legal limit for streets in USA). Some dealers(lunacycle) modify the software to bump it to 1500w while still maintaining the 750w stamp on the motor. There is also a controller called the ludicrous controller(lunacycle) that pushes it to 3000w, again, maintaining the 750w stamp on the motor. Best bang for the buck, and powerful as he11.

Most BBSHD in my experience have been 1000w “rated” with slightly over 1700 W peak output. That’s how they come stock from bafang. They can be tuned to 750w if requested.

As someone from the enthusiast PC space, I don't think bike upgrades are ever going to be the norm. Just like building / upgrading a pc, it's cheaper, easy to do and is far better to do as you can fit your needs perfectly. However the vast majority of people are scared away before they even look, Pre-builds are easier and you more grab and go, as well as the warranty aspects giving people more comfort. I believe the upgrade community will continue and grow as new parts and add on come available, but I don't think it will ever become the norm or even close.
