It was at the Bart Hall (formerly Fred Hall) Sportsman Show at the Long Beach Convention Center back in March. I don't recall the exact price but it was just over $2,500. They had a few boxes of them and one out of the box. A bit heavy compared to the 2000/2200 models and I did notice the DC charging was missing. The cheap knockoffs don't have Honda's EFI which I think is a real plus for the Honda. My CRF300L dual-sport motorcycle has it and it works well. I took a photo of the generators on display since I'd never seen one in person before. If I didn't already have 2 of the EU2000's I would have bought one at the show.

Wouldn't work. First off to have a large enough battery to reasonably handle normal loads that someone wants a generator for it would weigh an extra 30 or 40lbs and cost about $500-750 dollars more just for the lithium battery. Secondly, a generator charging a battery that is then powering an AC device would involve twice the conversions and inversions of energy, which equates to inefficiency. It would be a large, heavy, and expensive unit. Why do I say this? Because I basically have the large scale commercial version of it for my off grid house. A Delta Electronics 7500 watt DC generator for telecomm towers that has the ability to have four 100 amp hour 12v batteries linked in series to act as a long term starter backup in case the main telecomm backup batteries fail. It is a generator with built in DC converter that outputs 48v, and is used to power telecomm station battery backups in the event of a power outage. It is large, and weighs about 600 lbs.

@@JimYeats Completely get your point about nominal intermittent use, but I really was just thinking about those times when you're only needing to draw something like 100W. You can build a 100-200Wh battery out of regular model-grade Li-Pos that'd be good enough for that. Sure it'll add a few kg, complicate the electronics a bit amd automatically drop another 10% off your overall efficiency, but the alternative there is running a whole 3kW unit just to keep some lights on amd I can promise you the thermal efficiency of that motor will be through the floor in that case anyway. Camping next to buddies who have champion and HF generators - I'm happy with my decision. When we are out on trips ski camping or steelhead fishing in the winter its running whenever the furnace is running. In the summer we only run it when the AC is on as our camper has enough solar for all of our other needs. The cost proposition of the 3200 versus the 2200 is a tough one... We wanted a little more capacity than a single 2200 provides so the unit wasn't working quiet as hard for long periods. Since I was moving up from an old 2000, I would have needed to purchase 2x2200's to get the capacity required to run our camper. I went with the single 3200 for ease of use/ portability - with our truck camper setup, transporting 2x2200's would have been tough as we are limited on storage volume.

The strong selling points for me are the fuel injection, small relative light weight and hopefully Honda quality. The downsides for my needs are not enough power and no remote start. I used approx 20 gal in 5 days of 24/7 operation. Changed the oil at 100 hrs... Didn't even look too bad and this was cheap Mobil super oil. I bought a second of the same generator last year open box but never run. Swapped it out in the last 12hrs of generator use so I could change the oil on my first one at 100hr runtime... All of these models were/are the electric remote start inverter generators that are used with a couple of travel trailers. All the issues are under 500 hours. I had a crank but no start issue with the 3500 watt inverter generator. Carburetor and switches were good. I suspect a failed inverter module but I traded it in on the first batch of the now current 4500 units with a Champion distributor that I deal with rather than getting it fixed. The 3400 unit, which I still have, has had a series of problems. The small red light on off switch would not light and so the generator would not start. This switch is fused with a round glass fuse. Champion in all their genius, buried the fuse in a bundle of wires in the center of the generator. I saw it in the wiring schematic. I couldn't believe Champion would do something so dumb as to put a changeable fuse in such an inaccessible location so I called to confirm. Wait time on hold was an hour and forty-five minutes! The tech expert did not understand the issue and could not read the owner manual schematic. He did follow up and did ultimately confirm with a supervisor that indeed there was a fuse where I suspected. I had to disassemble a good amount of the generator to access the fuse. The fuse was bad. It was cheaply made. The solder for the wire filament at the end of the tube failed causing the filament to intermittently lose contact. This repair was done outside in the middle of the desert in over 100 degrees heat. It was not a good time for a failure. I replaced the glass fuse with a blade fuse in a rubber holder and ran it out to the battery compartment. That is what Champion should have done to begin with. The same generator failed on a December elk hunt when it would crank but not start. Nighttime temp was around 10 degrees. After doing everything I could think of over a few days, I took it to the distributor for repair. He found that a bolt came loose securing a valve rocker arm. One of the two (I forget which one) would not start. I traced it down to a loose ground wire. Last month the 3400 would not start because again the red on off switch would not light up. This time the fuse was good. I did a continuity test on the switch and it was bad. I had a spare switch that fixed the problem. Because of all the issues, I bring along a box of spare parts I bought off the Champion website. The switch has to be replaced by using a small screw driver to release a clip, then pulling it out and away from the panel. There is very little extra wire to clear the hole. It is so short that the metal terminal of one lead will easily touch the metal panel and short. Disconnect the battery first. It appears not much consideration was given to making these units easy to repair in the field. Now for the 4500 model. About every 10 hours the engine will surge as if running out of gas even though there is plenty in the tank. I'm sure that does wonders for the trailer electronics. The other issue with it is the power module breaker cuts out after about 45 minutes on a regular basis when attempting to power the AC. Power draws only about 1500 watts, well under the generator specs. I've taken it to a Champion repair station twice and they can't reproduce the problem. I suspect it is a weak inverter module that fails when warm. The carburetor on the older series appears to be very sensitive to the smallest amount of dirt. I have dissambled and cleaned them multiple times because of rough or uneven running. For comparision I have two Honda 2000 units bought in 2001 with a lot of hours that are used every year. I finally replaced the carburetor on one last year. That is the only significant repair they ever had. They have been used trouble free in the same way as the Champions. This was a long response but you did want to know. I figured the detail was necessary so you can decide if the failures are product or user related. All of these generators have been well maintained to factory recommendations, run on mats or elevated to be out of the dirt and although run regularly, they have not been abused. I've had the Hondas for 22 years with almost no issues whereas the Champions have been a disappointment over the four years that I have been using them. I hope this adds perspective to my original comment.

The Honda will probably have less voltage drop when compared to less expensive brands; an "invisible" benefit for sure. Not sure that entirely justifies the price, but fuel injection (no jets to change for altitude, can use any pump gas, simplified starting routine) in a suitcase is a luxury. I have a 2200 and it's been great. Unless you absolutely need 2600W+ *and* fuel injection in a suitcase the price is tough to get past.

From the oil reports the Honda is the best long term investment! This Honda will hands down our perform all other brands. As you see how many people have had these for 10-20+ years ! That’s impressive. It’s not a a great amount of power for a house but it could power an emergency refrigerator and tv / Wi-Fi & fans. Enough to get you through a tough black out. And remember if you can run less accessories that would require a smaller generator in turn less fuel. In a black out / outage situation the most important thing is how long can you go on the fuel you have on hand. Efficiency is King ! And remember if it don’t start it’s all for nothing ! 10 gallons of fuel can last you a few days and that good in my opinion!

Owning both a EU2200i and a EU3000iS for 5+ years in the neighborhood of 200+ hours, I really have no complaints. Both have kept me powered up in out of away places and major power outages at home. One thing Honda got right is the muffler system where the exhaust notes is quite lower compared to the clones, so the sound at 23 feet just blends in with the ambient background noise. Excellent when you're in a National Park where it's 60 dBa at 50 feet and if Ranger Rick can't tell its a generator, the less likely he's gonna bust ya and your neighbors will love you to death. With that being said, suitcase generators have quite a bit of tradeoffs when it comes to sound attenuation and saving weight. Since I mainly boondock and I have enough solar to keep my lithium batteries topped off everyday, but there days that you'll need a quick top off for those lean days; I bring along the EU3000iS for extra insurance. However, the bear of lugging around 130+ lbs of generator is a real pain; so the EU3200i is quite tempting. Not sure if it's really worth the extra $200 MSRP to shave off 71 lbs difference for the rare handful of times I be using it. Maybe, I'll just wait for it go on special for a really good price.

Looking at the parts list on this , I see a electric fuel pump in the tank, and I don't see any form of battery storage. I do see the indicator lights on while cranking. Is that enough to run the pump briefly to pressurize the FI?
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
So I have messed with this some and want to some fuel efficiency tests and proving to get some what accurate data is proving hard because of the intank fuel pump. Same as a car. So it does not prime like a normal car does so I think there is a check valve maybe on each side that will hold pressure or a least a lower pressure so once starter rope is pulled it opens to let some fuel in and then the other opens once motor spins. Definitely not making other tests easy lol

Also, imagine being in your camper because it’s raining and you’re lying in your bed just about ready to go to sleep and all you have to do is pick up the phone on your nightstand and hold the power button and it shuts off right before you close your eyes and go to sleep. Is it louder than the other one. Yes. But when you got a walk up the steps into the back of your 10 1/2 foot big foot camper on your F350 which one do you want to carry? You get what you pay for. This new Honda says FI for fuel injection. Notice how it does not say EFI for electronic fuel injection. I wonder how the fuel injection on this generator actually works do they have a electric high-pressure pump fed to a common single injector and uses a map, air sensor and a oxygen sensor to determine air fuel ratio, depending on what kind of altitude you’re in like a normal fuel injected vehicle does or is there some sort of special proprietary to the generator system and if something happens to it you’ll never be able to get parts for? Just wondering what makes the FI part of it witch is the only new thing here tick?

Interesting review, thanks for putting it together. Really like the FI option but the stickers shock is just too high. I’ll keep running my AiPower 1800/2300 (with the Yamaha engine) for our home 120V backup. Picked it up on sale at Costco for $400 (plus $70 shipping to Hawaii). It is noteworthy too that the 21.7A is for the base 2600 watts. It jumps up to 26.7A for the 3200 watts on the L5-30 port. As compared to 15A to 19.1A on my AiPower 1800/2300.
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
Yea the price is hard to comprehend lol. But the Aipower unit you have will probably last a long time. Although the Honda has a starting watt rating of 3200 watts it’s sustained or rated running is 2600 watts. But Honda has a unique feature that will let the machine run full rated 3200 for a small duration of time. That could be 5 mins or up to 20-25 mins depending on load, temp, and elevation. Much like the 2200i. But eventually it will shut down if not brought back to the 2600 watts rated load

Considerations when buying Honda vs. other make - heavy or emergency use. If the later buy cheaper brand - EFI or non EFI. Of course EFI is more attractive - single fuel or dual fuel. When times are tough propane will be more available than gasoline - 120 v or 220v - 220 v is better if you want to power your house but in small generators that is not always possible I wanted Honda and the EU 3200 would be perfect except it is not dual fuel and is an expensive option. Putting a propane conversion kit on it adds to the price if such a kit exists. Mine is for occassional or emergency use only, Much as I wanted a Honda generator for quality and reliability, I ended up with a dual fuel Champion 2200w gen. It is not a white label generator so parts will always be available and is a good American brand.

Correct but you said you cant buy any portable gen in CA which is not true. Outdoor lawn equipment sales stop in 2024 but generator and large pressure washer sale ban starts in 2028. Kinda a big difference but you can still own operate and get from out of state and bring back. And in the original bill it says “if feasible” so a clause if it’s not ready for full switch over. This was from the original that I read a year ago. And during a natural disaster like the floods we had a while back made them quickly realize those gas powered generators and water pumps of the size they want to ban maybe isn’t such a good idea.

@@johnnysweekends Yes, you are 100% correct. I edited my comment. To be honest, I hope it does go through. So CA can stop influencing how generators are made. Like you said, you can just bring one in from out of State. I also wonder how that ban will affect built-in generators for campers? It's funny that a recent natural disaster had to remind them what a generator is for as if that wasn't common sense. I added a generator plug on the outside of my house so I could restore power every time the wind would blow and they shut the power off.

@@johnnysweekends On a side note, the ICE yard tools ban is okay. At least they have an alternative. The 50v plus tools are pretty decent. There is no affordable alternative to a generator for anything more than a few hours. The whole point of a generator is when there is no power to charge batteries. Cheers!

What good is the fuel injection if it burns the same amount of fuel as carburetor ?
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
The fuel injection is about 10-15% more efficient and will start much easier and do better at altitude. Still will loose power but just run better

I for sure want one, but want to see the Genmax review.

Yup Ill be doing that soon once I get the new unit. Mine is preproduction unit and a couple changes have been made.

Why not put an oscilloscope on both units and see how clean the power is ?
