How to Clear the CMOS - Reset the BIOS & Why

I'm not sure why everyone is flaming this video saying "Get to the point" but for one I liked that you explained "WHY" you might need to clear the CMOS. Other tutorials on the internet explained the "how-to" but haven't explained the why. Johnny ignore the impatient individuals who can't seem to have an attention span for more than 12 minutes.

I agree. there is no reason to bash this guy for giving extra details and taking the time to explain why. Pay attention to detail otherwise you are destined for a fuck up. The smallest and most insignificant details in life can have the most catastrophic effects. Excellent video. I had just Overclocked my PC for the very first time (i5 3570K). I thought it wouldn't be a problem because I have a K in my cpu name. I accept the changes in efi and reset PC. BAAAAAM in all of a sudden my PC won't even power on longer then 2 seconds. I tried like 10 times, i almost went full berserk / panic state. I stumble across this video 10minutes later. I get my nerves togheter, open my case for the very first time. You’re a life saver. I got a second 8gb ram stick, tried to boot with a dimms set up, no boot. Tried to go back and test each individual ram stick, no boot. Tried running both in simms no boot. Popped the cmos battery out, rebooted and dimms worked great.

this video is very complicated for just a simple issue , here is the right way to clear your cmos: 1. shut down your pc 2. switch your power supply to off 3. unplug psu from wall 4. while using something like an anti static strap , find and pull out the cmos battery. it should be like a 3v watch battery 5. hold your power button in for 15 seconds , this clears and the current still in your components 6. insert cmos battery back 7. plug psu into wall 8. turn on your pc 9. you will get a message saying everything has been reset to default. 10. hit the key it tells you to continue 11. done :)

And this works on desktops? I'm looking to reset my CMOS because I am not receiving any feedback from my mouse, keyboard, or monitor. It seems to me that my computer is not passing the POST test because it does not beep after I turn the power on like it should. I've already tried what you said, except for the part where you said that we need to hold the power button down for 15 seconds once the battery is removed.

btw , you have to do the power button part because that is what clears the cmos. once the memory dedicated to cmos loses all power , it will be reset , just like the ram your cpu uses

Thank you sir. Also, just for enlightenment, wouldn't removing the battery for about 30 minutes have the same effect? Because that's what I did, I just never pressed the button and that 30 minutes. Also, when I hold down the power button for 15 seconds, this has to be done while the computer is unplugged right?

Keep in mind you dont want to leave the jumper in place for more than a few seconds. Usually a flat screw driver works easily and gets the job done. Now in rare cases where you think the mobo is dead and you tried to reset it a few times to no avail, then instead of losing your mind and buying a new board, put the jumper on and leave it in place for a good 30 seconds to one minute! Sometimes after overclocking its stubborn and you fear you bricked the board try that first, if that don't bring it back use a flat screwdriver and jolt it by making several fast contacts. That method actually saved an Asus board for me once and brought it back to life! Well when all the conventional methods have failed thats when you turn to the unconventional methods I have described here.....good luck!

​@milosivanovic6238 your fucked. That's something probably only the manufacturer can fix. This won't reset anything such as the ROM that your talking about. It will clear the settings back to default for example if you set your cpu to 7.9ghz in BIOS and need to clear that bCk to default

It wasn't until this Christmas that I was able to get all the parts (A $500+ Gaming Pc following a guide from scattervolt). Hi!! This worked for me on an ASUS motherboard (2015), I Unplugged the power cord, tthe jumper was already there , it has 3 pins, I moved it to the right (one position to the right) removed the CMOS battery, then plugged the power cord again , I did hold the power button for 30 seconds, the PC did nothing as you said it would happen , then moved the jumper back to where it was , placed the battery back. I repeated this process twice and it worked( it didn't work at first ), thank you for the video !! 🔥🏆👍

Acer Veriton, would not power on, power light and fans with limited power would switch on and off. I checked everything... and also removed the CMOS battery but all unsuccessful. So I finally tried the CMOS clear jumper and it worked. Thanks for the video and explanation.

BadMadPlay The problem definitely doesn't seem to be in the RAM sticks. I'm assuming you're using Windows 7, but if you're using Windows XP 32bit, then it is limited to 3.25 GB or RAM. So, even if you install 4 GB or ram, it will show, at most, 3.25 GB but it's strange that, in your case, only exactly 2 GB are shown. 1. What is your operating system? 2. Have you ever changed any settings in the BIOS? 3. Has your system ever recognized more than 2 GB memory? Good luck!

euheide Yes I am running windows 7 professional, 32bit I have only done a few things in the BIOS like i turned bank interleaving to auto, in someone else case they had sorted this issue out by doing that, but it didn't work for me so i reset to defaults, I've flashed the bios to the latest version a while ago i think at the time i flashed it, it had only 2gb installed. No my system has never recognized any more than 2gbs, I thought it could be the CAS on the sticks as one is 6 and one 5, so i bought 2 working matching brands with same CAS and timings and same issue. :(

You have to reset the ram. Take off the ram, turn on the pc, let it 3 seconds. Probabily you will hear some beeps, turn off the pc, put the ram back and turn it on. Is Better if you put the stick ram one by one.

Will resetting the bios affect a system that's been set up for a dual boot? Where c drive is a solid state used for OS, drivers, and system files, and D as a hard drive for everything else.

It will more than likely effect the boot order depending on which SATA port you have the drives plugged into. So for example if the "D" drive is plugged into SATA port 1 and the SSD is plugged into SATA port 2, after you reset the bios, the "D" drive may become the primary boot device because it is port 1. But since it does not have an OS the next drive to boot is whatever is plugged into SATA port 2 and that will be the SSD. But some motherboards may not boot the next drive in order and you will get nothing to boot. It will not effect any part of the system partition or the files that is on both drives. That's more than you needed to know but I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Mattuiop Do you have two OS's? Because it sounds like you just have two hard drives...which is not "Dual Boot". In any event, if you really do have a dual boot system, all that boot information for multiple OS's is stored on the HDD... not in the BIOS.

After clearing CMOS, you don't hafta install windows again. Clearing CMOS just puts the computer back the way it was when it was new, sorta. For me, on my Dell, ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards, it's often been a real lifesaver, when nothing else would really fix it. It's usually easy to do, the hardest part for me is getting that easy access inside the case and seeing what I'm doing, then locating the pins or the button. Just be sure to read/download the motherboard manual to make sure how find the button and to do it properly. On some motherboards, you *must remove the power completely* before doing this procedure. Most newer power supplies have a power switch on them to do this. Or just unplug it. After removing the power, I like to hold in the case's power button for a few seconds to completely drain the power supply too.

No led blinking in the motherboard indicates problem in the psu or some wrong connection you may have accidently made (considering you pointed out that you assembled a new pc )

Most tutorials include taking out and putting in the motherboard battery as part of the CMOS reset. Is there any particular reason you didn't?

Taking out the CMOS battery itself will reset all personal settings stored in the BIOS as well as the time/date ect... Lets say you have an admin/bios password that you set, this a password that you're prompted for immediately after POST, this password prevents you/someone from being able to get into the BIOS before the PC even fully starts up. And lets say you forgot this password, you'd only need to clear CMOS with the jumper to do this. Get it? You'd only remove the battery if it actually needed to be replaced, or you really wanted to clear all personal settings. However removing the CMOS battery will also clear the BIOS password as well. That battery can remove anything associated with BIOS if you take it out, everything will default.

Happened onto this video whilst in the midst of a gimlet eyed, excruciatingly pedantic reassembly following a full teardown of my youngest's new PC build. This moment comes on the tail of far too many nights spent sifting through message boards for resolution to our lack of POST or video output signal. (You know, something that doesn't involve just buying new parts until something works...) So here I am, replying to a video eight years after it was posted as a kind of good luck gesture or something. Cross your fingers.

Thanks for the vid, gonna post my sob story lol. My 8-9yr old pc that I built uses an ASUS P8P67 motherboard. The 2X4gb DDR3 RAM sticks I had in there were fine but recently I thought to add another 2X4gb DDR3 RAM sticks in as well to bring it up to 16gb. The old RAM sticks that I had are no longer in stock but I thought as long as they were DDR3 that any new sticks would be fine and the websites I checked stated that the motherboard could sort out two different types of memory slotted in. Nope, computer turned on but nothing on screen, ASUS red Mem OK light was on, held it down for 3 seconds to reboot my pc and hope it would make the two different sticks compatible but no luck. Turned off pc, took out the new sticks and just left my old ones in. When I rebooted the pc the screen was still blank and the red light MemOK was still on. Checked ASUS website and they reccomended what you have as well but also suggested to take out the CMOS battery from the mobo as well, which I did. However it then told me something about short circuiting (or something along those lines) a component in the battery holder?? Which I couldn't find so thought "fuck this" and put the battery back in and followed your steps instead. Sadly the problem persists, there's life in my pc when I turn it on but completely blank screens, but also when I put the little blue plastic jumper back to it's default one pin position the pc doesn't turn on at all, it only turns on when it's covering the 2nd and 3rd pin of the three pins. So that's a worry. I cry everytime but what can I do except blame myself, I'm gunna take it to a pc store and let an actual knowledgeable person have a look at it and hope for the best. I just wish the websites screamed in caps to not have two sets of different mem sticks even if they are both DDR3 and compatible with the mobo. AND I wish my old sticks were still available as I would of just got them if they were.

I was unable to boot my os, and this guy came like a god and showed me the right path with proper reasoning, i actually didn't had the jumper so i reset the bios by shorting them with a screwdriver. Thank you for saving my day.

Deepesh Godara I haven’t tried it yet but I went from a 2200g to a ryzen 5 2600 on a b450 tomahawk Mobo and I’ve been having issues with booting up and his explanation early in the video makes sense. I can’t find my jumper and in my manual it says not to start the pc with a jumper and to keep it off but leave the jumper on for 15 seconds . Thinking about taking a chance and using a jumper from my other motherboard and turning it on like he says hopefully I don’t mess anything up. Also on my EZdebug lights on the side my cpu light stays on when starting up everything runs fine all fans work and lights are on I’m wondering if this situation is similar to yours. And if you shorted it while starting the pc

So I just built a new PC and I tried to run the BIOS. but it won't work. The fans are running and so are the motherboard lights, but it wont enter BIOS and my monitor show "HDMI1 NO SIGNAL" Do you know what might be wrong? Any and all help is appreciated. The pc was working fine for two weeks and is now doing the exact same thing again. So confusing. If you find a solution I would love to know.

Been having probs with terrible lag using this POS Windows 10, so went to MS forum. ONE MS moderater initially gave the usual blurb - repeating stuff most anyone would know if they'd used a computer for 20 years, or 2, and of course, we'd all tried that stuff and it didn't work. Then, someone said, "Disable Superfetch" ... and tadah! Memory use of 95% dropped drastically! It worked, and frankly, anything that is described as useful because it "maintains computer use over time" ??? ...everyone in the forum goes and disables superfetch. We're all happy. THEN some guy says "restart BIOS" and the only other MS response, this time from a "support engineer" gave the guy a huge pat on the back, and thus ended that thread. I was furious. MS staffers rarely give decent answers, they are just using macros! Most of the info comes from the Users helping each other out, but now I have to ask ........... what was superfetch REALLY? And did we truly NOT need it? Also, what does "restarting BIOS" even do since I think he may have actually meant "reset" ... but .. well, it made no sense! Does it to you?

I sent my computer back to the shop I bought it from since I had a 3 year warranty, they contacted the manufacturer and got me a new motherboard.

Here is some things I would suggest, For HDMI: Try to plug your HDMI cable into a different plug in your monitor/tv If you have multiple sockets. If that does not work try a different HDMI cable or a DVI cable. If the issue still persists contact your computer manufacture or bring your pc to a local pc repair shop.
