Lyrics:
When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn
"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the green river where paradise lay?"
"Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away"
Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill
"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the green river where paradise lay?"
"Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away"
Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man
"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the green river where paradise lay?"
"Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away"
When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am
"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the green river where paradise lay?"
"Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away"

I am a 69 year old woman. I started listening to John Prine in 1972, just out of high school. Over the years I had the privilege to see him in concert three wonderful times. First time at Armadillo World in Austin with his best friend Steve Goodman. They stood up on the stage with their guitars and gave us a fantastic show. Next time was in an old theater in downtown Miami, FL. Billed as "The Three Johns"; John Prine, John Lee Hooker and Dr. John. Then I saw him in Fort Lauderdale years later. Every time was a fantastic show. He was the most talented songwriter of our time.

That sad day has come for John-who wrote & sang "When I get to heaven". This 76 yr. old fan is the saddest I've been since the death of close family members. True national treasure is with, Christ, parents & pal Steve Goodman!

Exactly the same for my wife and I. I was like he was true friend of our family, oiur constant musical companion for more than 45 years, going back to the Earl of Old Towne where my wife first saw him while a nursing student. So glad we made his last New Year's concert in Nashville. He was still at the top of his game. We've seen him more than 50 times and he was never better, and his new songs of the past few years have become many of my very favorites. He's gone too soon, but so thankful we had him as long as we did.

I did not know John Prine until just after his passing. How is it that I pull up his music every morning on Alexa before I start the coffee pot and every night when I lay down I put him on KZbin on my phone in the dark? I am a 65 year old heavy metal fan after all. Sometimes it is pure comfort and affirmation of lifes struggles that we all have. Sometimes, like tonight, the tears slowly rolling down my face are comforting as I listen to Irish Heartbeat in the light of my phone.

I've been listening to this song for over 50 years. The first time I heard it Tom T.Hall was singing it back in 1973. John Prine was a master storyteller. I love listening to this song. I especially like the fiddle 'sawing it out' during the interlude after the second verse. Thomas Wolfe once said: "You can't go home again." As a 70-year-old man, I wish I could.

I saw John play this song live at Tampa Theater around 1977, and I loved it. Then 5 years later, I saw one of the biggest names in bluegrass music ( The Osborne Brothers ) play this at a festival. I loved their rendition as well. Since then I've heard several bands cover Paradise, but no one can quite make it as good as the original.

Every so often I like to just sit back and listen to John's music and withiut fail I get lost and mesmerized in the pictures he paints in my head with his words. I listen to the same song a hundred times and each time it says something different to me. Before john died his music would often bring a teat to my eye and since his passing it brings more than a few. It is a weird set of emotions now for me to sit and listen to his beautifully crafted yet simply worded lyrics. It quite often brings a tear to my eye and a smile to my face at the same time. Miss you John. I hope you are enjoying your little slice of heaven with your family and your cocktail of vodka and ginger ale and you are taking a fine big haul on that cigarette that's nine miles long. Two years now and I wish I could go to just one more show.

Will never forget the time I was travelling through the part of Kentucky where the town of Paradise is located. (It was still on the map.) I was looking at the map to get my bearings while looking for the site of a Civil War battlefield- and noticed a river, the Green River of course. Saw the name "Paradise." That was enough to jog my memory of the song. I looked then for the name of the county. And, yes, it was none other than Muehlenburg. That all gave for me an actual place for the song that it would not otherwise have had. John Prine, an American original, one of the great ones. Rest in peace.
