In 1993 I was in 6th grade, and I swapped games to try out with my friend Tom. He gave me Gradius 3, I gave him SimCity. When I brought Gradius 3 back, Tom wasn't at school that day, so I just kept it in my locker, where it got stolen. (Friggin Lorenzo.) So my mom thought it was justified that since I lost his game, he got to keep mine. Parenting! Because of this, I asked for SimEarth for Christmas, and I got it, and... it sucks. One of the most disappointing game experiences of my life. At least I was able to get Star Fox that year

Yeah, trading games at school was always a gamble, especially with lockers. Once I traded my game (forgot what it was) for my friend's Spider-Man and X-Men (terrible). We traded back before school started, later that day he told me his copy was stolen. I felt bad for him, but was also thankful that we traded back early as I always kept my games on me (I never used my high school locker)

With SMB All-Stars you're not completely wrong. Lost Levels specifically (as well as the original Japanese SMB2) has a feature where if you finish the game with zero warp pipes you get to move on to "World 9" and finishing that world brings you to the letter worlds A through D which are mostly just harder versions of earlier levels. And don't forget that Secret of Mana supported THREE players simultaneous with a multi-tap! ;D

Had a friend who had Rock N Roll Racing and played it till I beat it as you can upgrade your vehicle like RC Pro AM minus collecting letters. Also, played countless hours of WWF Royle Rumble and remembering the arm drag trick but remember the awesome intro music when highlighting each wrestler. I don't recall bonus levels in All Stars and I would borrow 7th Saga from a classmate and try to get as far as I could in the game with the same aava without them overriding it and getting stuck. I also still have a copy of Final Fight. Friends had Mortal Kombat and remember hitting R button with Johnny Cage and crotch shot everyone except Sonia through the tournament. Did you play Secret of Mana at all? It's one of my favorites and deserves the title of "a classic" in my eyes. The worst of it is that sometimes the enemies tend to attack and attack while the HP-loss animation is still going so you can't move, and you can only hold 4 of each item. Still, it's a favorite for the gameplay, story and music, and the graphics really take you there, from right when the RPG boom was starting.

@@chrisrj9871 I didn't play it till years later, so it doesn't trigger any nostalgia for me. StarFox blew my mind to pieces back then, could not believe that game. Love it to this day. And WWF Royal Rumble was _AMAZING_ to play with friends, me and my buddies during highschool years had an absolute blast every week-ends playing this together, so much fun. going from actraiser 1 to 2 was a real downer. i agree with the name change and agree it can be in the same universe. i wish actraiser can make a comeback.

I remember seeing Star Fox for the first time. I thought it looked amazing but after a few minutes playing it, I was done. Which is partly the opposite of Doom, I couldn't get enough of that shareware floppy going around at my school and it was my dream to have a PC that could play it at home. Took a few years but I eventually got one.

Shadowrun was great on both platforms, rhey were just very different games. The SNES version was way better looking and had more of an adventure game feel with the Genesis being a much more traditional RPG. Shadowrun is a criminally underused IP. Rich and unique world that mixes fantasy and cyberpunk. I really don't understand how it isn't way more popular than it is

Shanghai was on many computers in 1986. The Apple IIGS version was outstanding - played it for many, many hours. And even my dad, who didn't like games, played it a ton.

Silicone and Synapse is now Blizzard. Also, there is a remake of Rock and Roll Racing being made. It has a different name (I think its called Motor Rock) because i dont think Blizzard has anything to do with it.

Out of these, i had Fatal Fury, SMB:All Stars, Star Fox and, of course Mortal Kombat. But in 94 as i didnt get my SNES till Christmas 93, lol. Its really crazy to look back on these games 30 years later, as i didnt know what somenof them were. I would have loved EVO if i had known anything about it! 😂 Actraiser 2 was one i always wanted but never had too

Lots of great titles here; biggest stand-outs to me are SimEarth, Super Valis 4, Shadowrun, Rock & Roll Racing, EVO, and Secret of Mana. I first played SimEarth for my old Mac Classic (still have it), and while that version has more sophisticated terminology (e.g. avians instead of birds), the SNES version has color and music, and the soundtrack is borderline industrial at times; very interesting port. Loved Shadowrun, but couldn't get all that far; now that there's a mouse hack, I'm going to give it another shot, but I really loved the rereboot trilogy. Rock & Roll Racing was rereleased as part of the Blizzard Arcade Collection (also includes Lost Vikings and Blackthorne), but I couldn't tell you if it has multiplayer or anything like that.

Never finished Secret of Mana? Let's fix that asap! I'll play with you. Also didn't Lufia and the Fortress of Doom come out in 1993? That's a pretty big miss off this list. Great soundtrack and excellent RPG

Hey, John! How about a video about all the NES games that were remade/rereleased on the SNES? You could cover cartridges, and if that’s not enough to fill the video, add in the ones from Satellaview. I can’t seem to find a video, or article, specifically covering this topic. Thanks!

Shanghai was on the NES and Gameboy to let that title make sense and it's pretty decent given the 8bit format too. Also you left out, Valis had a start too on the NES (Famicom) in Japan, sadly needs a translation since it has some poorly done cryptic bits in town streets areas to get the game triggered to move further yet the hack and slash was there too. Then later you hit on Plok and that one I saw that interview, seems Miyamoto calls it the 3rd best platformer on SNES and had considered publishing it until it looked like Yoshi's Island would maybe have its profit shared with it so they didn't. I'd believe it given I never played it until days ago when I finally found a copy and it's solid, very solid.
